If you look on the designer's web site she has a number of free patterns that would get you started on a small item such as a hat. I think the alternative name is modular knitting, you knit one piece then pick up stitches along the edge to knit another.

You could try the library, when I had a modular knitting phase a while I had two books out from Derbyshire libraries. It would give you an idea of whether you're going to like it before you buy the book (thereby saving some money to spend on yarn)

good thinking!
it's the spending on something you may not be into that's the problem. will call in at our local library and ask them to get some in for me.
thanks

I have a copy of the book. It uses texture and light/shade in a very easy way to crate images within knitting.

That's not what I think it (domino knitting) is, I think that it's more akin to Gempud's sock yarn blankie. Mitred squares (either increasing or decreasing) are one example of modular knitting, you pick up from one piece to knit the next. (The cover of the Oxboro book shows mitred squares). I've got "modular knits" by Iris Schreier and I've borrowed Patricia Werner's "Dazzling Knits" from the library and there are lots of other shapes in those. If you want a quick start just search on "mitered squares". (I reserve the right to spell this as mitred as I am not American)

I don't know anything about the process, but I saw the book at Winghams today, and it's only small.

Just thought i'd say, as I like a decent sized book personally.

Not that size matters :p
