View Full Version : Big Police Raid Stannington
goldenfleece 12-03-2005, 14:26 At my friends house earlier, which has a good view of Long Lane, Stannington, and a big detached house about half way down has just been raided by Police. 2 Marked cars, w unmarked car, some plain and uniformed officers, plus a police dog van, and a riot squad van with EIGHT helmeted officers stormed the house....well atttempted to storm it, dont think they could get it. Anyone know any more info? Dont know the house number, but appaently it has a local reputation as a drug dealers residence. It looked very spectacular, bit Sweeney like, but they didnt appear to catch or arrest anyone....

No idea. Dont know the area terribly well.
slimsid2000 12-03-2005, 14:35 Lets hope they do get them and put them away for a very long time. Scum like that drag down the whole area and would be much better off in a prison than a western suburb of Sheffield.

Well said!!! I think from what I saw they were trying to batter down the front door, which is round the side of the house, but it had obviously been fortified very very well. There is a Police car now still outside so they may be trying to get in round the back still........watch this space, lots of Police wondering about all around the local roads. Think some people might have run off to avoid arrest.....and are still at large. If I had videoed the whole thing on my mobile I would post it up.....but thats probably judicial prejudice or whatever the fancy term might be.....

Doesn't long lane only have about 3 buildings on it now, since the school closed?
Just been past and it's all quiet now. Any idea which house it was as there are 3 detached ones in the middle and one being built at the bottom?

They were looking for a Moderator who was fairly new to the area ;)

Its the one at the bottom (heading down the hill) of the 3 middle ones, has a blue Merc usually parked in the driveway or/and a red pick up truck......local stories going around now is that they had something to do with an incident in Hillsborough Park a couple of weeks ago (???), although why a Police van with dogs would turn up at the house I have no idea unless they were looking for drugs...
Everyone was looking out of their windows all around the house in question, there are houses on 3 sides and other higher flats and houses with clear views from balconies, etc when they heard all the racket....the police hardly made a subtle approach!! Hope they found something of use.....local word is that are all real nasty pieces of work who carry knives around at all times.
There goes the neighbourhood......
Thanks, the pick up was there when I went past this arvo.
kelly_owls 12-03-2005, 21:54 My house has a view of Long Lane and is a big detached house though I went to the SWFC game and saw loads of coppers racing up Stannington Road...s***!!
View from my room. Is this view similar to that of your friends?

On the subject of Long Lane has anyone noticed that offensive light at the bottom opposite the quarry? The big house on Tofts Lane has put in a sodium light to illuminate thier garden and it shines into your eyes when trying to turn right. /rant

I think it is an offence in law to display a light which may cause difficulties for drivers, e.g., blinding someone when performing a turning in the road. Suggest you contact local police station for advice before an accident occurs.
This police raid should be in tomorrow's Star?

Dont know what gets into the papers and what doesn't. I guess it depends on if they actually found anything on the premises or not, and if they actually made any arrests. Local word seems to suggest they failed to catch anyone and the sniffer dogs failed to locate anything of interest. If anything is in the paper though, put a link to it here as it will be interesting to hear the official word on what was happening.
There was a dodgy looking man standing outside the said house yeserday T time, we saw him when we walked the dog down long Lane, and he was holding a long knife, about 12" long and I am NOT kidding, rubbing it up and down the iron railings and trying to look "hard". We did not think he was about to carve the SUnday roast either!!!! He was walking into the middle of the road and then back again looking up and down the road, obviously expecting a visitor of some kind, and possinly not an invited guest.

And you reported this to the police of course ??

I dont actually know if its technically an offence to be standing outside your own house holding a knife.....it might be classed as private property, (aside from the bit when he walked into the road) Had I witnessed something a bit more substantial I would do, but holding a knife in your own driveway?? I am sure the Police would simply say that he if was not actually theatening anyone with it, there is nothing that they could do as he was on private property and appeared to be by himself and not actually threatening another. Anyone know the law here, can you hold a knife on private property land without breaking the law???
Enough people are reporting that house to the police for all manner of localised crimes, from car theft to drugs so I am sure they have plenty to plan their next raid!!! Everyone here wants them gone for good and I am sure that will happen in due course. People round here for about 6 blocks are walking dogs day and night past their driveway hoping to see them slip up...they have run out of friends and luck round here
UPDATE:
This has in fact been reported to the Police by someone else last night who saw the bloke with the big knife , but what they said about it I dont know.
The law states that it is an offence to possess a bladed article longer than 3 inches in public without reasonable cause. If he was on his own driveway, it depends on the context of what he was doing, but that would be for the police to determine. If I saw a bloke lurking about with a knife, especially if police had raided his house earlier, I would definately have called the police.

It has been reported by another dog walker who spotted this knife wielding solo performance. Anything in the local papers yet about this? No point ringing up the police and asking them what is going on I suppose......

It might be worth your trouble, if only to reinforce the other complaint they've received. It makes it harder for them to ignore the situation.
This guy could be a schizophrenic and pick on anyone to stick his knife into ! He certainly sounds a bit disturbed to me.

Tried that but they wont take 2 complaints from the same address for the same thing.
Yes, the whole family are a real tribe of scumbags. Myself I have seen a real collection of undesirables coming and going all hours in the past, often in battered up old Novas with no tax, etc. Plus someone up the hill from my girlfriend has identified his stolen motorbike on their property last year, and there are often vans collecting and delivering motorbikes there in the Summer. Had no idea they were all nicked bikes, I thought they were just maybe buying and selling them. It has definitely been a real operations centre for something recently.
The house was on the market a few weeks ago, it was on for several months and the for sale sign has now gone. Hope they have sold it and are moving out, and the local crime figures will sink nicely back to zero again.

It looks from your photo link that you are thinking of the other Long Lane at Stannington, the one that goes towards Loxely. The one the origional poster meant is the South facing one that goes to Rivelin.
Maybe worth having a word with some of the other people who are concerned about this and going to see your local councillor. There is a councillors surgery this Saturday between 10:00 & 11:30 at Lower Stannington Community Forum (this is in the block of shops at the top of Liberty Hill). The councillors meet the police on a regular basis and report residents issues such as this. We had some success recently on drug drop-offs at a certain telephone box.

Whaaa??
What does schizophrenia have to do with anything??
(Wrote about this stuff here (http://incurable-hippie.blogspot.com/2005/03/petitions-and-presumptions-aka-i-hate.html) and don't have the patience to go into it again so soon. It's there if anyone wants to see it, to challenge false stereotypes.)

I think Greybeard is probably referring to a couple of recent high profile cases where people have been stabbed to death by schizophrenics. If this is the case then his comments are understandable.
Like you I think more care is needed with reference to mental illness, I've seen posts on this forum where people have deplored racism etc and yet except the use of :loopy: when used in a derogatory fashion.

Mmm. Kinda.
There have been some high profile cases like you say. What is not reported is that the vast, vast incidences of violence and murder are people known to one another, within families, or young men who drink.
The press do a huge shouty thing if any history of mental illness is implicated, perpetuating the myth that people with mental health problems are violent.
It is a myth.
In terms of violence towards others, according to psychiatrists, the likelihood of someone being killed by somebody with a mental disorder is probably less than that of winning the National Lottery outright. Even then, victims are likely to be someone known to the killer, rather than a stranger. In fact, the most dangerous group in society is young men who drink, so for a community to feel safer I suppose it would also campaign to ban all young men and alcohol from their community?
If the comment about the :loopy: smiley was a dig at me, then I apologise if using it offended anyone.
Greybeard 14-03-2005, 18:55 Pippa,
Sadly it is not entirley a myth, - in the same report I believe you quoted from it says...
The actual number of homicides committed by individuals with mental disorders peaked at 130 in 1972, but since then had fallen steadily to 60 in 1995
...and I imagine it has continued to fall even further, but it is a problem that still exists.
However, the few people with mental illness who do kill, sometimes do so quite randomly, and if I came across somone in the street waving a 12 inch knife about and acting strangely I would err on the side of caution and assume they were probably mentally disturbed and could be dangerous.
I'm sorry if my rather loose use of the term 'schizophrenic', offended you; if the subject is one you're interested in you might like to look here...

Stannington is largely perfectly safe, it's just the chavs off such as the Liberty Hill and Hall Park Head estates you have to watch out for, although Hall Park Head etc is mostly populated by old folk, I have relatives (On Dad's side of the family) who live around there.
Edit: And no, there are NO chavs in my family so don't even start, you know who I'm talking to here..

Ahem I think you accidentally forgot to include the word ALLEGEDLY, I realise this was purely an over-site , of course, and not in any way deliberate, but you might want to put the word back where you intended it to be just in-case.
;)
