hotphil 12-03-2005, 03:21 PM You can get some facts and figures from www.upmystreet.com (get that popup blocker handy!).
As for opinions, I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the area.
kirky 12-03-2005, 03:27 PM i work in the area and my customers tell me car crime is pretty high and so is burglary...but its not done by people living in that area...netheredge is mainly made up of students and proffessional people which means many properties are empty during the day..i know this as i work on loads of houses in that area (window cleaner)...smack rats know this and the stude houses are an easy target......
Ousetunes 12-03-2005, 03:59 PM In the main Nether Edge is fine but has common problems like most other areas of Sheffield. My grandparents used to live there and it is true that the ethnic population has risen in the last 20, 25 years. But then again, so has the number of cars and I think one of the biggest problems facing the area is that of traffic and managing to park outside your house.
The 'traffic management scheme' in the area has IMHO exacerbated and not helped the situation. It's a mixed population including a growing student element, so throw in a few wheelie bins that never get moved from the pavement!
I also think Nether Edge is served well with its pubs: The Stag (good for kiddies in summer, it has a beer garden), the Union, The Byron and The Brincliffe Oaks (sport on TV, pool tables, dartboard and good quality, cheap grub). There are one or two other pubs nearby. You're also on good routes into the city - and out of, come to think about it.
Although it's a contentious way to put it, I'd give the area 7 out of ten (but bare in mind, I don't live there).
If you're worried about crime, the council stats for 2002 are as follows (left the 2 other wards in for comparison):
Crime and Community Safety
.................................................. ..............Ward Name:... Broomhill.........Nether Edge.......Sharrow ......City Avg
Burglary from a dwelling (Rate per 1,000 households)............ 65.0.............. 37.1.............. 88.0............ 29.4
Robbery offences (Rate per 1,000 population)........................ 2.2..................2.3................12.3...... .........2.6
Violence against the person (Rate per 1,000 population)........ 1.6..................2.0.................13.1..... .........6.0
Theft from a motor vehicle (Rate per 1,000 population)........... 26.1.................12.9...............43.7...... .....18.5
Theft of a motor vehicle (Rate per 1,000 population)............... 6.7...................5.3.................10.8.... .........6.9
Jammie 13-03-2005, 01:41 PM I think Netheredge especially the upper part towards brincliffe and eccy road i think has a lot of advantages. Eccy road is walkable, lots of buses/walkable to go to the city centre and the theatres. If you want to get to the station it is close and via the parkway roundabout you could reach the motorway quicker than places like Broomhill, lodgemoor and ranmoor. Access to peak district via dore is possible easily.
More affordable than areas in S10.
Botanical gardens and endcliffe park are close by.
Disadvantages are you wont get the fantastic views from netheredge as compared to most places in crosspool etc. Lots of apartments coming up so will get crowded as i suspect the people in this area do not have such a strong voice as compared to ranmoor and fulwood in preventing them!
I think if you want to enjoy the facilities in city centre and eccy road, high street then it is an ideal area. Cant comment on the school catchment area though.

There are loads and LOADS of nasty looking apartment blocks in Fulwood and Ranmoor though.
I remember as a lad Nether Edge being just about the number one up-and-coming nouveau riche / 'posh' district of Sheffield. We lived in the slums of Pitsmoor but the oft-repeated saying was that "in Nether Edge they had curtains to the windows but no sheets on the bed"!! (That's a translation of the from the local dialect)!!

Student houses, of which there are quite a few, often have several sets of TV, Hi-Fi etc, making them more lucrative, possibly.
We were burgled once, but they gained entry because I left the back door key in the lock, and they pushed it through and picked it up through the catflap...
What I've noticed about Nether Edge is that the feel of a neighbourhood changes completely within 50 paces, and there are pockets and stretches of very quiet, leafy bits - and there are plenty of grimy, run down and even derelict bits too.
It's the city in microcosm, almost.
It's really nice in places and a bit dodgy in others. Having said that, even the worst places are not as bad as the likes of manor etc. Asian population are very nice and not intimidating. Like living in S10 without the price tag. Walking distance of both london road and ecclesall road, which are two of the best places for shops, pubs etc.
investigator 14-03-2005, 11:16 AM I live in Nether Edge now and it's fine apart from struggling to park my car now and again. There is a good mix of people living there and everyone i've come across has been friendly enough. There is a varied assortment of shops and pubs and its very close to Ecclesall Road.
I reckon the houses are overpriced for what they are though. Only my opinion... i'm renting at the moment and couldn't afford the £200k for my terraced house with back yard/no parking space even if I wanted to (I can't get my wheelie bin down the passage cos my neighbour parks his stupid bicycles there as well but that's another story!).
cryinglion 18-03-2005, 10:16 AM I'm also thinking of moving to Nether Edge and this message board has been really helpful in giving me a bit of a feel for the area. We've looked at a couple of houses and driven around a little too but we're not from Sheffield so need some local advice and opinions. We'll be moving here june/july with my partner's job.
We have two little children so do you think it's a good area for families? I was looking at a place in Machon Bank recently and and I saw several people with pushchairs walking around during the 10 minutes I was there, so I reckon there must be quite a few families like ours in the area. However although there are a couple of nurseries nearby it doesn't seem to be near to any parks or kids playgrounds. I could have just missed them though.
Any further advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Mattski 18-03-2005, 10:27 AM Cryinglion,
I think Nether Edge is actually very child friendly. Other than a couple of majorish roads (Montgomery Road/Sheldon Road) the traffic levels are pretty good due to extrnsive traffic calming measures. Additionally, you have Chelsea Park 5 minutes walk up the hill from Machon Bank which is a small but lovely and varied park with some great views across the city and interesting sculptures. However, in the longer term, schools are that great unless you're closer to Ecclesall Road than Abbeydale Road.

cryinglion 18-03-2005, 10:41 AM Thanks for that.
We're not too bothered about schools as we'll only be there for two or three years - partner's job will move again. By that time the older one will only just have started school so I'm sure the local one will be fine. But it may be an issue when we come to sell it on three years from now.
investigator 18-03-2005, 11:05 AM There are loads of yound families in the area (including me and my 2 year old) and I would say it is very suitable for young children. Chelsea Park is lovely and has only recently been rebuilt, Endcliffe Park is within walking distance and Millhouses Park is only a short drive away. The Stag pub has a nice beer garden with play area too.
beanpod 18-03-2005, 11:59 AM Hi cryinglion,
Just across from Nether Edge is Meersbrook, which has some really nice houses, nice people, a good primary school, a big park - and it's cheaper!
I live there and I think it's pretty great!
cryinglion 19-03-2005, 09:40 PM Thank you. Just spent another day in Sheffield looking at houses and areas which is quite a chore with kids in tow.
I've just had a look on a couple of estate agents' web sites for houses in Meersbrook following the last post. Lots of people must have the same idea because the few that came up were all under offer. Which do you reckon would be the best estate agents to look at for property there?
And another question for the person with the 2 year old - any soft play, toddler groups, mum and baby groups or that sort of thing around Nether Edge? I know there are bound to be loads, but it took me months to locate them the last time I moved. Hoping the forum will help this time.
Thanks in anticipation.
Plain Talker 20-03-2005, 12:58 AM there is surestart who can give you information on this sort of thing
or, look up the "Sheffield Childrens Information Service", who can put you in touch with young childrens services, and playgroups etc. (or sheffield libraries and information service:-" they can give this info, too. i think.
hope this helps.

evildrneil 20-03-2005, 01:11 AM I rather like parts of Nether edge, but (as with a lot of areas in Sheffield) it covers quite a large and diverse area some of which is leafy and lovely, some of which is rather run down. If you can remember the name of the road we may be able to give you better information :)
cryinglion 21-03-2005, 06:34 PM Well our offer has been accepted so all being well we'll be moving to Nether Edge around the end of June. Many thanks for all the replies, information and advice. The forum is brilliant and, though I'll be sad to leave my friends here, I'm really looking forward to living in Sheffield. You seem like a right friendly bunch.
Thanks again.
