That one in particular looks charming in a grumpy sort of way. :)

I think you'd be looking at a serious amount of grooming with a Persian. Are you thinking of getting one? I'm sure there'll be others on here who can comment more specifically on the breed.

No not thinking of getting one at the moent - just wondered how they compare to short haired cats.

Well for a start they're a lot more labour intensive because of the grooming, although in some ways, that may make for a more loving and person-friendly cat because of the daily physical contact. They dont make ideal outdoor pets and you'll probably find that reputable dealers will insist they go to indoor homes only. Like any cat that has been properly socialised and introduced to a variety of people, pets and environments from an early age, they make ideal companions.

other than that, not entirely sure what you mean by 'how they compare to short haired cats'. They are long haired...CATS

I owned one in the late 70s to the mid 80s.

Correction: It owned me.

Lovely cats but look as if they ran into a wall.

We see one regularly at the vets (only for flea/worming and he had a sensitive tummy) he's gorgeous and so funny in his own funny way.

I think they can have some respiratory issues due to their short faces and according to this particular cat's owner - they're not as laid back as they look! He has his mad half hours too!

Talking purely from a long haired POV I have a domestic long haired cat who thinks she's a persian (gives you 'that' look) and the regular grooming has definitely made her more handleable but she does hate being groomed - probably because I only recently started doing it on a regular basis and she's 10 years old.

Personally don't think I'd own one - if I was able to get a cat when I move out (have to leave these here as they're mums and they hate the dogs!) it'd be a siamese rescue :D

It's funny how looks immediately make people pigeonhole cats (and all other animals or even humans, for that matter!). I wouldn't own a Persian because they do look like they've run into a wall, or a Sphynx because they just seem weird, or a Siamese/Oriental because I prefer a cat with less of a lean look * - but that's not to say that they don't all have wonderful temperaments or can be just as loving as your run of the mill moggie or bitsa. It's all a vanity and preference thing when it comes down to it.

* but if any of the above were to be abandoned on my doorstep, how could I be so heartless as to turn them away? ;)

Apart from what's alreday been said, the other thing to note about most oriental breeds is that they do seem to be vocal. Our male cat is part Burman and he's the most vocal cat we've ever had. :)

We had a siamese cross come to us as a stray and boy was she vocal!

In all honesty, I'm not a fan of the way siamese cats look but after having owned one of these ugly critters, their inner beauty really does shine through!

They're demanding and vocal (just like dallies!) and tend to be predisposed to getting along with dogs moreso than some other breeds - hence my choice! :D

I wouldnt turn one away either - I'm a big softie when it comes to cats, but the breed isn't high up on my list of desired 'breeds' - I prefer the sleek athletic or the strong semi longhaired types, hence the mix we have now. I do love the look of the Sphynx, mind you -and the Chinchilla.

You want to live with a Bengal (correction: 2 bengals) and an Oriental. The bungles beat the oriental breed hands down when it comes to VOICE (and persistence of voice)

Would go along with what Lotti says about being OK with dogs if brought up with them- our tiny Oriental girl is very confident around the daft dobermutt having come from a GSD breeder and spending the first 13 weeks of her life with 10 GSDs and a Great Dane (plus her onw mum n siblings). http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/katkin2/2004_0627PIC0003.jpg A very chilled out girl and of course Alfie the Barmy Bengal thinks the dog is a plaything to chew on and torment, something none of the others would DARE do. Definitely not couch potatoes and definitely not afraid to voice an opinion on anyhting and everything. http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/katkin2/alfieailsa2903052.jpg

I'm biased but I think Wegies are beautiful too http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/katkin2/20080313_23.jpg

I love them, their nature is so much calmer than most having also owned and rescued a few other breeds inc Korats, Russian blues, birmans manx and a couple of siamese we had in once. I hate the those breeders who try and get the nose as flat as possible by breeding ultra to ultra with no thought to the health of the cat. I have seen cats with noses in between their eyes before and the nostrils are just tiny slits. how they manage to breath I have no idea. Poor cats. My Kate has quite a flat face thought not as ultra as some and her nostrils are open otherwise I would not have bought her. I have to pay more attention to her face wiping around her eyes and nose every day to make sure there is no build up. Their coats need a lot of care and can easily become knotted so don't even think of getting one or buying one for someone who isn't 100% committed.
But if you are then they are a delightful breed to live with. Not as outgoing as the Exotics but just as lovable

I get very annoyed with humans sometimes. We've created a breed that is totally unable to look after themselves (at least coat wise) and then have the arrogance to complain that they need grooming too much!

That's what seems to come across when working in rescue. They can be lovely animals, very loving and attentive, but I disagree with breeding in extreme things like the breathing issues.

I must admit I'm not overly keen on animals with flat faces in general, but I really really love persian crosses, I think that they are just so pretty
