View Full Version : Jack Russell Problems
tinkabel 18-03-2008, 23:06 I am at the end of my tether with my Jack Russell puppy, she's around 7 months old and out of control. Trying to house train her is a nightmare, she knows what she needs to do, gets lots of praise from doing it outside but she just squats where she pleases, if i wasn't so soft i'd lock the little devil outside until she learns. Anyway thats the least of my problems, she has just blown the sockets in the house and blown my hoover up  my OH left it plugged in and she decided to chew the plug, what we hadn't realised is she'd already chewed through the wire twice  i am raging and in a moment of madness offered to give her to my OH's friend :hihi: What can i do? My OH is dead against crate training so that isn't an option at all :(
Thanks in advance.
They really aren't a soft option as a pet are they? :?
we used to have one
the house training problems we had seemed to have originated from the 'breeder' though, so I would question where you obtained your pup from, and what conditions she was kept in?
they can be a breed prone to scent marking etc, which isn't something limited exclusively to the male of the species I'm afraid
unless you can be on hand 24/7 to strictly supervise your pup, you're on a hiding to nothing here - and it's going to take one heck of a long time to conquer this - unless you ditch the OH and go for crate training :(
is she really squatting wherever she likes, or is she aiming for one or two favoured spots? (possibly more)
Firstly dogs are not human and dont try to annoy you on purpose (although sometimes it may feel like that):hihi:
I would suggest that with the housetraining, then maybe she is a little confused, how often is she let out to pee, who lets her out, do all the family know the routine, is she peeing in the same place as she may still be able to smell her previous wee? There are lots of factors to consider here.
With the chewing, puppies chew, simple as and you have to make sure that they have plenty of chew toys (Kongs are fab for this). if not, they will chew anything and everything and wires can kill.
As with a new born child, you have to train yourself to make sure your home is safe for a puppy as they will get into mischief in a flash. If they eat something they shouldnt, then you will find yourself in the vet with expensive surgery unfortunately. Baby gates are a good idea to prevent your pup entering areas you dont want them to be.
tinkabel 23-03-2008, 16:15 Thankfully i have calmed down a lot since i posted this :hihi:
Thanks for the replies, she does pee everywhere and she loves to pee right by my OH's feet!
I have now removed everything from the room the dogs sleep in and there's still her toys in there to play with if she wants to. Now the weathers a bit brighter i'm hoping she'll learn to go outside, she gets so much praise when she does and she loves praise. Just got to grit my teeth and bare it i guess lol!
Her routine is pretty much set in stone, wee as soon as she gets up, run around the garden like a loon :hihi@ breakfast and then out again whilst i hang the washing out/get washing in. Then she's pretty much let out every hour, i've noticed if i catch her squating if i say no she stops and then nags to go outside so we have got a little progress!
OH has got no patience whatsoever so the next time he kicks off because shes made a mess i'll mention crate training (unfortunately Strix i can't get rid of OH, i'd miss his dog too much :hihi:)
tinkabel 23-03-2008, 16:16 Oh also i did tell my OH that perhaps because she was born in not so good conditions this could be why she is like she is, he told me not to be so daft lol! She was born in a damp, draughty barn :( she had terrible worms when we got her which we have sorted now and she was such a quiet, shy little thing, oh how the times change :hihi:

Oh they change soon enough as soon as they know they have wormed their way into your affections ( like men :hihi: ).
It sounds like your doing all the right things with her really, I know how frustrating it is though as I have Kira she is just over 4 months now and we are really getting there with the house training, but if I don't time it right she still does it in the house, sometimes you just get so frustrated with them its only natural ...keep up the good work :)
