View Full Version : Getting from Manchester to Sheffield on a Saturday night...
genesiscouch 12-03-2005, 08:56 Mr. Genesis and I are going to a concert tonight in Manchester. The problem is I can't find a way to get back to Sheffield as the buses and trains seem to stop running fairly early on. We could spend the night but we prefer not to. Are there any other options? Ideally we could probably leave at around 11:30pm or so.
Any advice would be much appreciated :)

I'm guessing they probably want to have a drink.

Well we don't drive a car, actually. We choose not to hazard the roads with our North American driving habits and our complete ignorance of roundabouts! :P
Well in that case ...
Maybe you could hire someone to drive you there and back? Just bribe them with money / free entry to the concert!
You could even advertise the job here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=51).
Enjoy the night out! :P
check www.nationalrail.co.uk for times
Last time I went to manchester and got the late train back im sure they actually set on a coach to replace the train at midnight, but this is actually a few years ago, your best bed is to check with the train people.

A_Partridge 12-03-2005, 09:42 Im off to manchester tonight, we are driving (sorry full car so cant offer a lift). We have decided to stay over as it seemed the easiest option. If there is two of you it will only cost about £25 each for a room.
P.S. just being nosey but what gig are you going to?

This service is still in operation - I used it last time I went to Manchester on a Tuesday evening. But they don't seem to offer it on Saturday nights! Thanks anyway.
The last train from Manchester departs at 23:19 and gets here at 10:15 in the morning with one change  The one before that leaves at 22:26. :|

Well it seems we will have to get a room - yeah! Ah well. We're going to see Bright Eyes (Conor Oberst) and Rilo Kiley at Manchester Academy. Should be a very good show.

Surely that's a typo!!
No, online journey planners do have a habit of generating 'silly' journey options like that. I am guessing the journey involves getting a train from Manchester to Leeds then waiting about 8 hours in Leeds for the first train to Sheffield Sunday morning!
Cutglass 12-03-2005, 12:27 Glad you've managed to sort something out for staying overnite! I travel regularly to Sheff from Preston at the weekends using the trains and for the past couple of weeks, a lot of journeys from Sheff to Manchester have involved catching a bus to Manchester and then another train to Preston from there, apparently there's some essential rail track work going on, so no trains from Sheff to Man, or the other way round either. But when you check yr train times, please remember to click on the update button, cos thats the only way you'll find out prior to yr journey if there are any route alterations, ie, being put on a bus instead of a train for part of your journey.
Snakey_B 12-03-2005, 12:55 when i went to mancehster last (nov) we got a train back from the new station (picadilly im sure) back to sheffield at 3:30ish am after we had been clubbing.and im 100% sure they ran trains every hour back to sheffield Unless things have now changed
A 24 hour train service operates all year round between Manchester Airport - Manchester Piccadilly - Sheffield every day of the week EXCEPT Saturday night/Sunday morning.
Also winter Sundays every year January to March the line is closed for annual maintenance, when replacement buses operate. This year they seem to have extended this to Saturdays as well as Sundays - there must be more work taking place this year!
Try www.transportdirect.info - this has access to almost all bus, coach and train timetables and may work out some obscure way back by public transport if it exists!
Just come back from Manchester. Had to go via Leeds as essential track maintenance is in operation all weekend. I have it on good authority that this is the last weekend and that all is now done. NOT holding my breath.....
Greenback 13-03-2005, 19:41 How was the gig? I love Bright Eyes! Conor is quite a big artist in the States now isn't he?
As a typical indie kid I have to say I loved him before he was so famous :D
