View Full Version : Is music important to you?

Do you listen to music when you are sad, happy, frustrated etc and it reminds you of certain events in your life. Is it that first date you went on or when you split up with a boyfriend/girlfriend or perhaps when one of your children was born ?

Does music help you when you have decisions to make? Is music important in your life?

I think music comes close behind air, water and food as essential to me.
I can't imagine not being able to play music to help me out of a bad mood or to remember a time or place or person.
I wish I was a better musician, but being able to listen to other artists still gives me immense pleasure.

btw off to see Franz Ferdinand tonight in manchester!

Without the risk of sounding stupid (Yes a risk I rarely take I know  ) but I have many reactions to different genres of music..

Music does help me think, react to things etc.. So erm yes, music is important in my life. Does that sound odd :suspect:

music helps me concentrate...I am trying to write something at the moment (other than this post) and I have my current favourite album playing (Delta Goodrem) to keep me on track...unfortunately for me I am blonde and easily distracted :suspect:

I have always loved music, it is really important to me.

I don`t think it`s odd for music to be important it is better than having photos somethimes.

I am listening to Lionel Ritchie at the moment and that makes me smile. Happy times for me.

I have not even after 7 years been able to listen to my dad`s fav.
Mario Lanza too sad.

I grew up with music......I played cornet when I was 6 in the Chapeltown Brass Band.
I can play all instruments so far and have played with the likes of Eddie Calvert.

In my life I have played Guitar, Lead and Rythm....For Backing bands and Fagan In the RSA.
I used to write songs but gave up after I noticed that my songs used to end up about the bad things in life....not very inspiring...

I have a special room at the top of my garden these days where I can play my instruments without bothering anyone and It has a built in bar so I normally am there for the night!! lol

What would life be without a song ?? Pretty mundane I would think!

*eek* playing instruments. I have played cornet, keybpard, violin and recorder...I gave them all up. I have a tendancy of if it doesn't come easy to learn something then I don't bother.....

I leave the talented things to others, I have my own niche and it isn't in music I am afraid.

I can't tell you the amount of times when I can't decide on what to wear to a business meeting, so I'll stick on a Queen CD, and before I know it I'm sitting with clients, dressed in a backwards leotard.

I wonder if the protagonist in "Sophies Choice" should've used this method of decision-making when deciding which of her kids should die? She bangs on a bit of Nick Cave, and ends up saying "Kill them both, I'm dead fed up".

Does music help you when you have decisions to make? Is music important in your life? I think you have just put the whole importance to music in your opening thread but to me personally I play music all the time.
Its far better than daytime TV which " I work nights " and it helps me relax.
Whats different about me to anyone I know is I have a full band width of taste in music.
I can listen to opera, Jazz and big band or modern chart music, hip hop and R&B and love em all.
I have always been interested in radio and music and I am the most musical in the family, IE I was first to buy a stereo, did a bit of DJing in my teens and do some amateur radio so music has kept with me to today.
But I don't play an instrument.

Indeed it is. Classical music for the most part and sacred choral music the best loved. But it's often counter-productive cos I have to stop what I'm doing and just listen.

Music is very important to me and my family. Both me and my hubby were in the charts in the 80s. (neither us had heard of the others bands though!!! lol)
He plays piano, and guitar. I used to play the cello. I'm now learning to play the leier.

I like all music and don't have a rigid genre. I see lots in music. eg: maths, colour, art, etc.

Play on

All the time, from emo to metal to pop, I couldn't live without it cos there's always a song you can relate to a problem or just a phase in general that you are going through x

I like listening to Music...

Music i feel has such a reflection on life...

Feeling down listen to something up beat... Do not listen to slow loved up music otherwise this will make your mood twice as bad... Talking from experience!

With a loved one... listen to something lovey and soothing get that feel for romance grrrr! ;)

On your way out and wanna get that mood... reach for the Dance Album  start the evening early ;)

Listening to Music makes me happier of day... Listening to the Radio/CD able to have a sing along that really makes my day lol

Music is this important to me too.

Listening to music has always been a life-affirming experience for me, ever since I was a child. Music affects me emotionally like almost nothing else - no matter how low I've felt at times, music has always been able to give me a lift. And sometimes it can make me feel absolutely joyous!

I wouldn't like to imagine a world without music - it would be so dull and grey and lifeless.

Music can transport you back years to happy and somtimes sad times. You can smell, hear and sense times past with just one song. Sugar Baby Love takes me back to my teens. I remember the fairground and the 'Speedway' the coloured lights, the smell of candyfloss and the screams and whoops of the girls as the Speedway got faster and faster......:D

Sometimes when you have had enough of solving problems put the music on and it makes you feel so much better.

Music matters to me and it can range from Classical when I need to think serious or to my friends Heavy rock band and their songs when I want to think of nothing.

I love music.
I can`t remember which single I bought first though so anyone know.
Bee Gees Jive Talkin
Tavares Heaven must be missing an Angel
Jacksons Show me the way to go

Jacksons Show me the way to go Tavares goes way back to 1976 and Jive talking 1975 where as Show me the way goes back to 1977 where it reached number one in June for 1 week, it spent 10 weeks in the chart.
The Bee Gees got to number 5 with Jive Talkin in June 1975.
Oh and Tavares got to number 4 in July 1976.

I have been trying to get my head round Macbeth all day for my Assignment and so I put on the free cd with Sundays News of the World and I have at last managed to start to piece things together.

Music does help with problems.

I never knew how much I actually listened to music until I did a media diary at uni... yes I know, crap but easy assignment and quite revealing in how desperately sad I am :P

I listen to music all the time, CD is on first thing in morning while I get dressed n have breakfast and I listen to walkman while travelling to and from uni/work and when Im doing the ironing. TV is very rarely on cos its mainly a pile of toss!

Can't play a musical instument (...well harmonica... kinda) and wish I could.

As for the more emotial side of music I never listen to sad stuff when Im depressed already cos thats just goona make it worse! I listen to something noisy and preferably with a lot of expletives :D

Some songs mean a lot to me my Muse - Origin of Symmetry albumn got me thru some really tought times in hosp and there are songs that remind me of my ex, he pretty much ruined my enjoyment in listening to Jimmy Cliff and the Pixies but know Im cool with it and I like them even more, and there are songs that make me think of my boyf and I smile whenever I hear them, even if its Slipnot... I think its pants but it reminds me of him and I smile :heyhey:

Mushy's task for the week is to go learn an instrument!

We were talking about this at the weekend. It's really easy to think of things that you want to do before you're old, but instead we tried to think of things that we could do tomorrow that would change us. Realistic things that is. My plan was to learn jazz. not got round to it yet, but it's in the pipe line.

I have no natural musical ability :( I can just about sing but other than that I have no idea, Ive got a guitar thats too big for me and steadily gathering dust, could just about play the harmonica mainly involves blowing and moving it around in your gob.... ha ha no rudeness :P and used to be able to play the piano when Id written the letters on all the keys
Learning how to play the drums would be cool tho, I could be the female equivalent of ANIMAL!!!!!!!

Andy78
28-10-2004, 10:39
I believe that musical ability can be learned; It just takes patience. You should try playing guitar again. It's my plan to learn piano eventually. I think I'll leave till when I'm retired and needing stuff to do. I've always wanted to play drums, but they're not very practical as require very easy going neighbours and housemates. Not the best instrument to play quietly.

The problem with harmonica is its not a solo instrument. Only really talented people can make the harmonica sound good on its own. Play along with a song/cd/band though and depending if its in key (diatonic) you can't really go wrong with an harmonica. :)

"Music" - John Miles

Music was my first love
And it will be my last.
Music of the future
And music of the past.

To live without my music
Would be impossible to do.
In this world of troubles,
My music pulls me through.

Pretty much sums it up for me.

I couldn't live without music! :o

I listen to different genre's of music depending on the mood I'm in.

Music is a powerful tool in life when it comes to getting through certain situations and can also help you remember feelings from happy memories.

There are songs I can play and I can relive my memories, the smells, the feelings etc

I love music - it's a part of my life! :)
