View Full Version : Sheffield: Punning Capital of the North?
DanSumption 11-03-2005, 13:01 Anyone else see last Saturday's Guardian colour supplement? They had a double page spread of photos of punning shop names. Out of about 20 shops in total, about half were in London, and Sheffield was the only other place with more than one shop shown.
So do we have a lot of punning shop names here, or was it just that the photographer spent a bit more time in Sheffield than elsewhere in the country?
And to put you out of your misery, the two shops shown were Kumquat Mae (Abbeydale Road, vegetarian restaurant) and the Battersea Cod's Home (chip shop, Walkley, sadly no longer).
Anyone spot any other good ones around? I can think of Curl Up and Dye and Hair by Christmas (both hairdressers), and there used to be a chip shop in Walkley called ww.in-the-net.cod (sic - the owner obviously wasn't up on Internet domain names). Personally, punning shop names tend to wind me up; and why are they always hairdressers and cafés?
BTW I think the photos were from a forthcoming book on the subject.
Dunno if it's still there, but I used to go to a chippy called A Salt & Battered on London Road. It was really small and takeaway only, but nice stuff...
oasismark 11-03-2005, 13:17 Food shop called Sam & Ellas in Broomhill.
I have my hair cut at ' Hairport ' and the sign on the front is a comb and scissors crossed to look like an aeroplane.
DanSumption 11-03-2005, 13:21 Of course, when I open my Italian deli, it will be called.... [drum roll]... con Sumption.
In Edinburgh there is a girft shop called Thistle Do.
mjlacey21 11-03-2005, 13:42 Does Kebabish count? It's quite kebaby.
Nah, for top marks it would have to be Abrakebabra.:hihi:
How about British Hairways? Abbeydale Road South.
E. Sockett at Fir Vale - electrical supplies.
Crackers 11-03-2005, 15:16 'Northern Sole' in Broomhill - fish & chippy.

LOL - what a blast from the past!! That place used to fascinate me, because even as a kid, I could somehow tell that it was an absolutely APPALLING pun. :D (I mean - 'a salt' for heaven's sake!!!????)
Did the job though cos I always noticed it.

Yeah, probably have somebody coughing up blood as the logo. Or a starving artist in a garret.
Herbaliser 12-03-2005, 16:55 Battersea Cod's Home has been replaced by a Chinese take-away called 'Wok This Way' :)

Disco_Cat 15-03-2005, 13:34 I’ve been misreading the title of this thread as being ‘pruning capital of the North’ Don’t know which would be more impressive.
May I add Whichcraft the craft shop.
GimmeSomePK 16-03-2005, 03:58 Not sure it counts as a pun, but there's a shop on West Street that makes me chuckle whenever i see it....
