View Full Version : What's your PC called?
does it have a name or just a number? Did you name it yourself or was it named when you bought it?
If you go into the control panel and click system choose the computer name and see what`s in there.
main: v1, server: v2, laptop: v3. genius.
:D mines dandelion, my previous one was bison
Ginger_Kitty 11-03-2005, 13:05 lol mine gets called many things...none of them repeatable on a family forum!!!
:D I know exactly what you mean
DanSumption 11-03-2005, 13:08 I tend to just name them after the manufacturer, or case manufacturer, so I currently have Akasa, Cooler (Coolermaster), Vaio1 and Vaio2.
When I used to run a "proper" webhosting setup, I named our servers after things that got me going in the morning, so we had Croissant (the firewall with the hole in it), Cigarette (the smoking webserver) and Coffee (the caffeine-powered database server). When we added a second webserver I called it Chocolate. Funny how many good things start with a "C".
The IT department of the company where I was based, who were helping me to get these machines up and running, were a little dismissive and at the same time a little jealous of my whacky naming scheme. Their servers had exciting names like "S0197".
lol i love it when things get named, makes em a little bit more personal and fun.
Most things like this have little fun stories behind them.
Our PC at home is called Jean.
We have a plant called Barbra too.
muddycoffee 11-03-2005, 13:31 In the computer industry, many of the sad types in server rooms name their servers after things from star wars or red dwarf.
I however am cool and have 2 sets of 3 machines at work.

At one place I worked the file server was Gondor, the backup was Mordor, my dev maching was Eriador and the other developer's machine was Rohan. Are you implying that this behaviour might not be considered... normal?
I've also known servers named after real ales, which I thought was an ace idea.
Anyway, my machines. At the moment I only have three. They are:
Main machine: Maverick
Laptop: Fireblade
Kids machine: Kids1
Yes, I couldn't be bothered to think of a name for the kids one. I did have a second machine to complement Maverick called Goose, but it died. I should have known that would happen...
I've had ones named after Simpsons characters - Milhouse, Flanders, Krusty, Sideshow Bob etc. Always took it very seriously when we bought a new server, sat down with the Simpson's bible picked a few names and then each took turns at discounting a name until we ended up arriving at one :)
Just bought a new server cluster at my current place - 3 of them and I'm pushing for 'Curly, Larry and Moe' :hihi: just hope they don't fight like they did in real life!
Glasstop 11-03-2005, 15:32 As a lot of other people use we also use planets then we have to move on to moons
We currently have all the planets apart from venus but we do have a titan
The place I'm working at the moment has servers named after characters in The Simpsons.
We drew the line at ApuNahasapeemapetilon but we are just configuring sideshowbob.
At home it's 'JoesDesktop', 'Laptop', 'Win95', 'homer' (my Linux box) and a couple of others that I can't remember because they rarely give me grief.... :)
Joe

Well, actually one is from the bible and another from Persian mythology. Not sure about Mycroft, perhaps a Heinlein original.
the 2 here used to be called Blue and White, because one was in a blue case, and the other was in a white one. White has survived, but Blue is now called Phong, after the new case its been built in (http://www.jeantech.com/Products/Cases/Phong/phong.html) .
Apparently, its Japanes for Breeze.
fnkysknky 12-03-2005, 10:36 My PC that I haven't used since I moved house but is in a box somewhere is called Chronic and was the server on a network in the shared house I used to live in, the clients were called Shiva, Indica etc. and the workgroup was called Greenhouse - well it was a mostly student house after all :)
My computer is called Edith, and my printer was called betty
Oh, and I have a plant called Jonny & Paulette (it had two stems, one big one small, like their namesakes from Grease 2)

Nothing in the world is original.
Mycroft Holmes IV (named after Sherlock's more intelligent brother) was a computer (who started the process of The Moon Seceeding from earth)) , And so was Ishtar (To Sail beyond the Sunset) whose avatar played a vital role in The Number of the Beast.
Lazarus is named after Lazarus Long, who eventually became a computer IIRC, after being his own father and a number of other temporal flings.
so obviously Heinlein was deriving his character names from fiction and history.

Mycroft is Mycroft Holmes, brother of Sherlock. Ishtar was born human but she became computer at the same time as Mycroft. Lazarus was named Woodrow by his parents, but took the name Lazarus, fittingly as he became The Elder.
Beakerzoid 12-03-2005, 14:02 My PC is called Destiny, with the drives being named Scarlett, Green, White and Black (I'm a Captain Scarlett fan!)
My P.C is lovingly named Ghengis

Not quite the same but mines called Marvin for the paranoid android in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. It seems to suit it somehow.
threecolours 13-03-2005, 14:42 When I'm having a bad day at work or want to get out the office it's lovingly called my 'ball and chain!'
