View Full Version : General Election
Labour are still odds on to win the next election at 2-9 but could there be a big upset? Can the Libs manage the biggest swing of all time to land a 100-1 shot or are the Tories a better bet a 3-1?
Inside information required!!!!!

DaBouncer 24-09-2003, 15:24 Lib Dems. i say give em a chance. (Even if the leader is a Jock)
Moon Maiden 24-09-2003, 15:26 I am torn between conservative and their excellent policies on immigrants and Lib Dems as I cannot bring myself to vote for labour and the idea of voting for the cons is like nails down a blackboard.
However Lib dems are the only party to have replied to a letter I sent asking how they may address the fears and concerns of pagan families of religious harrassment and discrimination!!!

mr craig 24-09-2003, 15:31 No vote for me,there all lieing b******s if you ask me so whats the point, nothing ever gets any better.
Agent Orange 24-09-2003, 15:32 Don't be so negative with Labour, afterall they rid the Uk of over 18 years of neglect from the Conservatives!! They still would be a good Government if it wasn't for Mr Blair and the fact that Mr Bush's hand is firmly placed up his arse!!!

................ and alcoholic hehehe.
Anyway....
I was watching the Lib Dems party conference on BBC Parliament today, with the hope of better understanding what makes the party tick.
I have to say that I was not at all impressed by the speakers I saw. They seemed to lack a certain charisma and quality of argument.
However, I think it is getting time for a change from Labour... either this time or next time. I cannot in good conscience vote for the Conservative party because of their grass roots social intollerance which drives me up the wall :P so this time I shall vote Lib Dem. I know there are supremely qualified people in the party - and hope CK makes good choices when choosing his Cabinet team should they get the 100-1.
I'm going to stick it out with Labour despite the tory press attempts to blame TB for all the problems the country is encountering.
Cons - couldn't vote for them as they only look out for the wealthy.
Libs - still a joke party who promise everything knowing they will never be in power. This back fired on them when they gained power in Sheffield, remember? They spent all the reserves and all they had to show for 3 years in power were speed humps in liberal strongholds. Don't imagine they'll be much better nationally.
upholder 24-09-2003, 16:37 If Blair resigns before the next election then I vote Labour.
Conservatives?...... err no.
Lib Dems?..... Their figures never add up.
Although I like the idea of abolishing the council tax in favour of an income related scheme.
I voted Lib may change between now and them, but I just don't think they had enough time to make a difference in Sheffield last time.
Remember use your vote wisely, no point voting for a hopeless case and letting some other party get in to your local council.
DaBouncer 24-09-2003, 17:29 No one's voting for BNP I take it then?
Que: LouiseB
alchresearch 24-09-2003, 17:45 I was pro Lib Dem until in a recent interview their home affairs spokesman said that Tony Martin deserved to go to prison for what he did.

I never heard any politician say any different. Very few of them are brave enough to stick their neck out on something as controversial as that one.
I could never seriously vote Lib Dem as how can any party be all things to all voters. Seems to me like a party full of disenchanted tories and Labour rejects.
I shall be voting conservative this time for the first time in my life (I just hope that they've removed IDS by then).
MARTINO 1 24-09-2003, 18:57 If i vote green party and they get elected will they sweep the streets around longley .

I seriously think they should bring back William Hague. He may get a lot of support in the area than in the past, being a local lad.
I will be voting for the party that introduced
smaller class sizes so that infants get a chance to start their education properly
the minimum wage so that no-one has to earn only a pound or two an hour any more
new schools and hospitals so that we dont have to put buckets under leaks any more
free eye tests for pensioners (who most need them) and a few hundred quid every winter to pay for a bit of heating
money back for childcare so that Mums can go back to work
paternity leave so that Dads get to spend time with their new family
holiday pay for part-time workers
quicker methods to get abandoned and dangerous cars off our streets before some kid hurts themself playing in one
breast cancer treatment within only weeks so that frightened women are not kept waiting for months
new laws to lock up paedophiles who search for kids on the internet
very long sentences for repeat burglars
the lowest inflation in 30 years
the lowest mortgage rate in 30 years (I now pay 3.5%, remember when it was 17 back in the early 1990s?
the lowest unemployment levels in 30 years
.......so that will be Labour then (well you did ask)

The next time my MP friend calls round to raid my drinks cabinet (or the contents within) I shall show him your remarks Max.
Expect a bouquet, he's Labour with a 25,000 majority.
FTR, several on here make him laugh, though not enough to induce him to bring a bottle.
The up and coming budget should be VERY interesting.

Hmm! I was forced to double check the writers name on that one. Not my scene I'm afraid. ;)

Yeah, provided we can get him out of the pub (remember the 12 or so pints claim!) Wat a 'ard Yorkshireman! lol, fecking t*at!
His face just doesn't match the title of PM for some reason, mind you neither does IDS.
As usual I will have th draw a box and cross it, on the bottom of the ballot paper and write my own name next to it.

Thanks folks, very interesting!
Given that the Libs already have a seat in Sheffield, this poll may present them as being more popular than they really are in the country. I still think many people see a Lib vote as a "wasted" vote but then again the recent Brent by-election may have helped convince many would-be Lib voters that it isn't.
I also think that if Tony Blair goes then the support (which it has undoubtedly lost due to the war) will drift back and nobody else will have a chance against them. But does anyone in Labour have the balls to instigate a revolt?!?! I don't think so, and I also don't think he will have the grace to resign "for the good of his party".
So far the 100-1 price is looking better and better and I'm thinking of sticking a speculative bullseye on it. Keep voting... my money is on your hands!!!
To be an effective determinant for the likely result of the next general election, you need to find out how people voted last time and how they would vote next time, to see if there is a swing.
Because if the LibDem support in this poll is coming from people who voted LibDem last time too, say, then that would not suggest a change. It would suggest that we had a lot of folk online from Sheffield Hallam....

What happened to principles and passionate belief? Why do people attach so much importance to the way people look instead of the person they are?
We are living with the result of this type of thinking. Mr Blair et al masters in the art of spin, deceit.

OK, but why? Is it the waste billions, the lying over Iraq, the tax increases, or something else that swings it for you?
alchresearch 25-09-2003, 19:41 I grew up on the Badger estate in Woodhouse in the 70s and 80s where the majority if people in our ward voted labour.
When I was first eligibe to vote, I did so too, and then once more but not the last time - where I voted lib dem.
They do say you get more right wing as you get older. Whether you become less radical and want traditional values, or start to accumulate wealth is hard to say.
I am now interested in the Conservative party but will not vote for my local candidate because he is a southerner who does not and has never lived in my area. I don't see why he should get my vote when he personally has done nothing for me.
Our lib dems really harass the council on local issues and get things done, but the Labour council newsletter claims how Labour is the party of action - only because they have to do it.

Could say the same about your answer. Come on give us your reason for voting tory and not, I may add, your reasons for not voting for another party.

Tougher on crime and asylum seekers, scrapping 'top up fees' and possibly all university fees, and hopefully will stop the tax and spend of New Labour, which doesn't seem to be causing any improvements to services. Bad point: weak leader - William Hague shouldn't have resigned.

Yeah but lets face it, if Blair is a lying spinning cheating mofo'ing b*stard - at least he's good at it.!
Hague? Well, I think he speaks for himself on this one. IDS - well, older version of Hague.
Tories will only ever have a chance ones Maggies sent on her way.

I hear what you're saying LouiseB but it doesn;t excuse the fact that Tony and his merry men have lied about Iraq (evn though I feel that for the safety of the people, Saddam was better out of power). Council Tax is still on the rise, petrol (evenb with all this new oil) is on the rise, he's a money theif from those that need it most.
The Bank of englad chooses the base rate of the mortgage, I wouldn't lay that at the governments door.
OK they brought in minimum wage, which is a great idea. But it's here to stay now, so they can bugger off and we can get a decent (lol) government in power.
They have done too much wrong IMHO and I've lost faith in little blair. Have read up on the Lib Dems, I am now in two minds whether or not to vote them in the next election. But I promise that Labour will NOT get my vote.
I too am a life-long labour supporter but I will not vote for them now.
Billions have been spent fighting a war in which thousands of people lost their lives or were maimed. And for what? We have made the threat from terrorism far worse and the rest of the world looks on disgusted by our arrogance. Blair has done an unforgivable dis-service to our country and he and his cronies must go!
Lib Dems for me next time. Don't agree with all their policies but best of a bad bunch! Perhaps I'll join their party and try and influence things! Zamo for PM!!!!
