View Full Version : Street dance/ hip hop dance lessons! Hypedance!
Hi Everyone,
Does anyone know where i'd be able to learn street/hiphop dancing one on one, or know of any dance teachers?
Also does anyone go to hypedance above the leadmill? Would love to go but was wondering what the atmosphere was like?
Thanks very much
Ella :D:thumbsup:
my girl goes here on a thursday, she enjoys it. i've been to see a show and it all looks good to me. off to see their professional company at the crucible next month.
Rainrescue 17-03-2008, 22:45 Where does she go to and whats the name of the show?
Is there an age range for them?
thanks
Elphi 24 18-03-2008, 07:47 my daughter had a "dance" birthday party there. The managers/owners had cocked up the timings and wanted us to leave an hour early - they thought it would be appropriate for children under 10 to be outside without coats in the middle of December until their parents came to collect at the alloted time for the end of the party.
Not sure I'd trust them with a pet rat never mind my kids

She goes to Hype Dance. Not sure about an age range (she's 32). Show is called Routes. Info here... Hype Dance (http://www.hypedance.org.uk)

I wouldn't let my child out in December without a coat in the first place!?
Any why you would want to send your pet rat dancing...? :loopy:
Elphi 24 18-03-2008, 08:31 well some parents did bearing in mind they were being dropped off at the door and were being picked up again same

Fair enough but what if the car broke down or they were involved in an accident or similar... Children should always have a coat to hand in the cold months.
Elphi 24 18-03-2008, 08:50 I wasnt one of those parents - only the host of the party. Suggest you take your nag elsewhere

I'm not nagging, just making a valid point which I think most parents (you yourself by your previous comment) would agree with.
Elphi 24 18-03-2008, 08:59 and what has your nagging to do with this original post?
and what has your nagging to do with this original post?
Nothing. I replied to the original post then I replied to yours. I will leave this now.
Thanks for asking about Hype Dance Company, Sheffield's Hiphop Dance Theatre Company and dance training Academy. The best way to get an idea of who we are, and what we do is to come down to a class and give it a go. There's no sign up to any open classes, so if it's not for you then not much lost.
In response to the slightly off original post on parties. An error did occur 18 months ago with one booking which did not result in children standing outside, a member of staff stayed with the group to lock up. As a gesture of goodwill no charge was made for this party, and the class they all appeared to enjoy.
Full details of all our work are available on our website www.hypedance.org.uk
Elphi 24 18-03-2008, 11:57 I agree. The children did not end up staying outside although it was suggested. However, they were bundled in a very small room for the remaining half hour. If I had envisaged that this would be the case I would have prepared games but had anticipated that they would be fully occupied for the time I had booked.
That said they did enjoy the actual dance.
ooh, gone a bit off topic here!
Ella LP, I go to Hype and i Love it!! I've done all sorts but do the street now everyone's fab, tutors are friendly (i went somewhere before where all they did was dance infront of us!).
good way to get fit - i hate the gym :-)
DancinJay 18-03-2008, 12:50 Hi Ella,
Hype is a fabulous place to go (I'd previously been to a number of other schools in Sheffield but by far and away Hype stands above them).
The atmosphere is lovely and that's why (despite being on a break at the moment) I will always go back there.
The tutors take time, explain stuff, they're knowledgeable, approachable, fun and the atmosphere is brilliant!
You'll love it!
Thanks so much for all your help, i'll deff give the class a go and hopefully see some of you down there (i'll be the one doing all the wrong moves and dancing badly hehehe!)
Just to check the beginner classes are still on tuesdays 8.30pm - 9.30pm aren't they? Haha!
DancinJay 18-03-2008, 16:28 Yup that's right Ella, tonight (Tuesday) 8:30 - 9:30
Timetable here (http://www.hypedance.org.uk/academy/times.htm)
Don't worry about not getting it, or looking like your making mistakes.
1) We all started somewhere :)
2) We've all done it :)
3) We all still do it :) (even when we're performing :D )
Take a smile with you and just have fun, that's the best part.
I've just been reading through this thread and wondering if it'd be my kind of thing. I'm 32, 6ft and stocky so is this likely to be something I'd find difficult? Most fellas I've see dancing are usually slim or at most of an athletic build. I do need to get back into some sort of exercise but the gym is boring and I don't fancy going back into martial arts after 4 years of doing nothing.
Would I be wasting my money and your time? :)
DancinJay 15-04-2008, 17:29 I'd say you'd only find it as difficult as the rest of everyone else. I'm 6ft 2in and I'm thin (not by choice) but don't let that put you off, nor the fact that most of the class is likely to be female. They're really nothing to be afraid of :)
If you enjoy dancing and having a good time whilst getting some good exercise and making friends then this is for you.
Besides, it's not like you have to sign up for a month, or pay a membership fee or anything like you would a gym. Just turn up, completely unannounced with some water and a few quid in your pocket to pay for the class and see what you think.
The only thing I'd add to that (and it's the same as for everyone) is don't expect to get it all straight away, if it was that easy every night club would look like a music video. Give it a few weeks and the moves will go in easier than they did at first.
Give it a try, worst thing that you can discover is that it's not for you :)
It says on the timetable that beginners are on Wednesday night too. Is that right because that'd be better for me. Farmkid needs babysitting on Tuesday nights.
DancinJay 15-04-2008, 22:30 If that's what the timetable says then it shall be so.
pippa.357 02-06-2008, 12:37 Hey, what sort of age range goes to the classes? I'm 22 and wanting to give it a go but none of my housemates seem interested so looks like i'll be going it alone. Is it easy to get into the place as I went to Leadmill the other night and din't notice any entrance etc.
Not sure as I've not been yet. :suspect: Give DancinJay a pm, he'll probably know. :D
There is now a class on Wednesday nights as well as Tuesday, as the class was getting overcrowded. I've not been to the classes yet as have been having private lessons but would totally agree with all the positive stuff that's been said before. Everyone is really friendly and not pretentious at all, and i deff think you should give it a few goes before you decide if its for you, as like dancinjay said it takes a few weeks for your brain to get to grips with the moves (well it took me a few weeks anyway lol!). You should deff try it though its so much fun :D

Hi Pippa,
If you're stood looking at the entrance to the Leadmill (in that huge arch), then jsut to the right of it is a smaller door in a slight recess from the pavement.
On the wall inside that recess is a buzzer; one button is marked "Hype Office" try that one first (if you get no response try the one marked "Hype Studio"), when they answer say you're there for dancing and they'll buzz you in.
Go up the stairs (there's a few!) and you'll come to to office first (2nd floor I think it is now) and if you keep going up to the top then you'll arrive at the big studio.
The age range is varied, probably from late teens upwards (I'm not going to start speculating on ages so as not to upset anyone) but I'd say it is predominately 20-somethings that attend as Hype have specific classes for children and teenagers that are at other times.
Don't worry about going alone, you'll soon make friends.
Enjoy yourself :)
Jay.
Absolutely fantastic for dance, run expertly by anna.
im looking for bugy dance
hennypenny 17-06-2009, 16:45 Our home ed group have just had a series of 8 weekly classes at City Limits on Penistone road which they have really enjoyed, they did an hour and half of ballroom and jive and then half hour of street dance each week, they loved it.
The kids have asked to do it again in September, so it must be good :)
bekilou1989 19-06-2009, 19:09 So is hype dance for any age group :)
