View Full Version : Would you have opened the door to this man?
FairyNormal 11-03-2005, 09:38 This morning about 7:15am, someone was knocking repeatedly on my front door. I don't use my front door so I looked through the curtains to see who it was. There was a man stood there saying "open your door." Of course I said no way! He was gesturing and asking for a drink. I was a bit alarmed and just said no and closed the curtains on him. He continued up the road knocking on other peoples doors but I didn't see if anyone gave him a drink.
My initial thoughs were, oh he's drunk, I'm not getting involved. But now I keep wondering if I was being really mean. What if he was ill or something and needed help? I guess I am just thinking about the 'what if's?'.
What would you have done? Opened the door or told him to get lost?
Personally, my reaction would have been the same as yours - err on the side of caution.
The only good reason I can think of for someone needing a drink that urgently would be a diabetic caught without something sugary & about to have a hypo attack & on balance I'd say that was unlikely to be the case...
Yodameister 11-03-2005, 09:50 I'd open the door on the chain and ask him what he wanted (and probably be holding a blunt object in a hand behind the door just in case....)
I think I'd have had to know what the hell was the matter with him before I opened the door and gave him free acess to my home!
You should always have a bloody good reason to open your door to a stranger...always ask for ID or a sensible explanation of just what the person on the doorstep wants.
Lets hope he's not laying dead in the gutter.

& let's be grateful, also, that FetishFairy & her children aren't!
beansfeast 11-03-2005, 10:00 Thing is, whatever the reason. I'm sure no one would blame a woman on her own for not opening the door in this situation... more than likely he would have got an answer on another door.
Myself, I would have opened the door cautiously and ready for anything to happen. But then I am 6'2 and not a lightweight! :D

My sentiments exactly.
I'm with you on this though FF. There's usually a clean empty plastic bottle kicking about our kitchen (coz we recycle), so I probably would have filled it and thrown it out of a window for him, if that was his problem.
Squeaker 11-03-2005, 10:15 Do you live near a shop....seems stange he is knocking on doors for a drink

At quarter past seven in the morning?
That must have been one thirsty fellow.
I don't think I would have opened the door. But I would possibly have offered him a drink out of the window. But then you don't always think like that at the time. It all sounds very odd though.

LOL! I suppose I was thinking of a bottle like Strix suggested. But I doubt I would have thought of that at the time. I would probably be nervous and just want him to leave!

Yup, sounds like the same guy. Grey jacket I think and grey hair. He did leave with no fuss thanks goodness. he must've been pretty desperate to be asking for booze at 7am.
What's the world coming to eh?
happychick 13-03-2005, 02:58 She did the right thing,it wasn't safe enough to take a risk like that. You just followed your natural instincts.
Even if the indiviual involved was ill theres no reason to feel guilty about anything.
It was a nasty scary experience for a woman to be in, and she took the safest possible way of dealing with it.
