View Full Version : Fiesta mk1's in Sheffield?
goldenfleece 11-03-2005, 08:26 Anyone seen any old MK I Fiestas on the roads around Sheffield? I am fairly convinced they have all vanished now, not seen another one for nearly 2 months and I drive around Sheffield most days, many areas. Interested to know if anyone has spotted any.
I have 5 of them in various stages of restoration dating from 77 to 82, ranging from a mint 1300 GL in metallic gold, to a 1977 version which is in 19 cardboard boxes at the moment. and used to see at least 2 or 3 a week chugging around Sheffield up until last Xmas. Now, not seen any......has the scrap man claimed all of them except mine?
Keep your eyes peeled....like to know if mine are the last ones to survive around here. Practical Classics Magazine now writes about them as 'modern Ford classics' so they are no longer considered 'clapped out old Fords'.
In case anyone doesnt remember them, they have a highly distinctive front end with square headlights, which no other car has ever resembled. Produced February 1977 to August 1983, from 'R to Y' suffix reg plates, but a few got a new style 'A' prefix plate in September 83.
beansforyou 11-03-2005, 09:38 My boyfriend is crazy about the mk1 Fiesta, and I have to admit to having quite a fondness of them myself now :)
I can only think of two places where i've seen them parked up, one is just off the main road up to Stannington, parked up on a side road on your right hand side, it's orange so pretty noticeable
The other is just outside Wharncliffe Side, on someones drive, it's not moved for months, i'm just getting the courage up to go and ask if it's for sale :D
I'll point my bf towards this thread, you can bore..erm *cough* I mean entertain each other for hours ;)

GASP.....what area? Have they all just come out of the darkest recesses of garages for the Spring? Well, er spring, nearly spring really........
If you see any mint condition metallic GOLD ones, W (81) and X (82) reg respectively, they are both mine, plus a light blue R (77) reg, and a dark green W (81)........all mine, the latter 2 undergoing full restoration on an ongoing basis.
Me and the other half plus 2 friends took all four of them out last week on Sunday, and drove in convoy right through the middle of Sheffield........did people stop and stare or what.....laugh actually........
beansforyou 11-03-2005, 10:11 The orange one is up stannington road yes, parked on one of the side roads on your right hand side as you drive up the hill (before the turn off for the college)
We're al set for Fiesta in the Park :loopy:
Are you going?
We've got a mk4 Fezzy, but it's the mk1 he really wants, it's just having enough dough to make it feasible, and somewhere to park it! :)

Even a shed on wheels can be made good for less than you might think. I managed to turn a 1977 R reg scrap yard case into a virtual show car in 3 months, and had change out of £400, which amazed me, but then I did practically all the work myself. OK, it didnt need a new shell or every panel replacing, just 2 new front wings, inner wings, boot floor, full rub down to bare metal and zinc undercoat and paint job, sills, engine stripdown, etc. but a Garage would have given me a 5K bill probably with their hourly labour charges!!!!
Always happy to work on them so if he gets one, get him to PM me, have worked on dozens of them over the last 10 years and know them backwards and inside out. Plus have a cellar full of spares, more or less everything....
beansforyou 11-03-2005, 10:24 I don't know if I dare show him this thread now....he might never be the same man again! lol
You sound as passionate as he is, only a bit further along the road to fiesta heaven :)
I will point him towards this when he gets back in

Junction 30 roundabout, on the way into Staveley/Chesterfield
LoopyLou 11-03-2005, 10:28 I used to drive one, it was my first car after I passed my test in 1992
It was a 'y' reg in light beige with a brown vinyl roof. The rust on it was unbelievable. I once spent three weekends taking off the rust, priming, filling and repainting and generally sprucing the old girl up and within two weeks, the rust had come back through.
Sold it to a local lad who went through the same process and removed the vinyl roof and he too had a happy 12 months driving around.
Would love to know what happened to it after that. With all that rust 13 years ago, I don;t think there would be anything of it left at all now!!!!
nice to hear someone is looking after her brothers and sisters golden fleece. :D

PM me the registration....I can do an online check via c ertain website to see if the car has been officially scrapped or its still registered on the road or SORN.......
Fords are terrible for rust, but the MK 2's were much worse, which is why few of those 83 to 89 models survive overall in relation to other cars of the same age. The only way to deal with rust is to use that paint on rust-converter, a few different brands availabe, if you are going to repaint afterwards, followed by ZINC primer, at least 4 coats. otherwise it just eats back through in no time. If not going to repaint just use 50/50 mix diesel and oil and that stops it dead in its tracks.
You know I thought I was eccentric keeping old Fiestas, but its encouraging to know a few others regard them highly. They were very very good cars and gearboxes, and far better than any revision of the Fiesta to date. Those engines are so highly powered for such low CC 's its unbelievable. Drove a MK 3 1.4 last year and it would have been left far behind by my MKI 1.1's......
I see a mk1 near the new law courts most days. It's a good example too. Not many left though I agree.

The only true effective method is to cut it out entirely and weld fresh metal in.
Sorry I can't view fords highly, after all its a ford :gag: But I can respect your passionate about a certain marque and brand.
After all people proabably think I am a nut case because I like Maestros

Without a doubt, for a full restoration that is what I always do. And I usually try and replace the entire panel rather than patch weld, as all MK I panels are still available new from a specialist supplier in Norfolk. But for general keeping a car on the road pending a later full restoration, or even for storage, those methods halt the progression of rust until you have the time for a major bit of welding.
mattymoo 11-03-2005, 18:02 Like my gf said (beansforyou) i adore mk1 fiestas and as soon as i sort a garage out etc i'm planning on buying one to tinker with so i can talk about them to her even more lol......your restoration projects sound like so much fun mate. I can add to a sighting of one, and that would be a gold one around glossop road area. It had a bashed in front left wing but that just makes me want one even more so i can restore it.....Currently bomming around in a subtly modified mark4 fiesta that i've adored for 5years but is on its last legs (110,000K) Really pleased knowing that there are other Fiesta nuts out there lol....Keep up the good work mate  I'll post pictures up for you when i eventually get one!

goldenfleece 12-03-2005, 08:06 No problems with hijacking this thread.....as long as its all relevant, I like to read what others have seen and where.....
I had a great set of pix of my R reg restoration project but I cant find them at the moment.........also lost the cable that links my mobile to the PC so cant download any pix from that either......wish I had bluetooth on the PC......the phone has a wierd socket to USB adapter on it and have no other cables that will fit it.
The MK1 is great little car.I used to have a blue 950cc Fiesta (CUA 56 Y) it ran out of test (floor needed replacing) so I parked it up at my mates.About a month later I went on holiday for 3weeks.On my 3rd day away I phoned home to find that the South yorkshire housing association were'nt happy about the extra car on his drive and told him it had to be moved within 7days.I wasnt about to do anything about it so it ended up being taken by the scrap man.

SlimboyFat 13-03-2005, 19:12 MAte had a couple of Mark 1s. One of them even had the foot pump for the windscreen washers.

The very early ones had the floor operated foot pump, we have an early one with one of those in. Nightmare actually as the floor mounted pump is right next to the clutch, so if something is in front of you spraying dirt all over the windscreen you have to keep pumping the floor switch all the time, and if you happen to want to change gear and brake at the same time it is somewhat easy to get confused.
Decided to sell one of my 1981 1117 MK I Fiestas, see FOR SALE section, need the space for a new proect coming in.
