View Full Version : Can The Blades sneak into the play-offs?
steveb2007 16-03-2008, 15:16 Can The Blades sneak into the play-offs with a late run?
I mean,if we were to win another 3 or 4 games on the bounce,we would be knocking on the door, and who knows?:suspect:
mrsteabag 16-03-2008, 15:22 It ain't over till the fat lady sings as they say :D
never say never ;)
steveb2007 16-03-2008, 15:26 It's a pity Robson didn't go a few games earlier!
They may well need to win all 8 games - but then, they needed to win all 11, and they've bagged the first three.
Still highly unlikely, but less unlikely than it was a fortnight ago.
I would have to say no... We would need to win 6 of our last eight, at least. It'd be nice though.
briggy1967 16-03-2008, 16:24 errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr no
discodown 16-03-2008, 16:38 Depends. Its a tight league so a few more results our way and a few crap results from people above us and its possible, unlikely though but a top half finish would be a decent end to a hugely disappointing season
Robbie Loving 16-03-2008, 16:59 I would have to say no... We would need to win 6 of our last eight, at least. It'd be nice though.
I'd agree with this, 68 points to me looks likely to get a play off place.
If they keep up the performance of Saturday you never know ,Robson set us back big time a lot to answer for imo
Agent Gypo 16-03-2008, 19:04 Can The Blades sneak into the play-offs with a late run?
While it's mathematically possible, I'll still hope.
But it's really not likely....
blueandwhite 16-03-2008, 19:06 You've got more chance of going to the moon and back in a day.
barmyowls 16-03-2008, 19:22 Im sorry to say no ! but maybe next season i feel the blades will have a great chance and this is coming from a owls fan
canadablade 16-03-2008, 20:27 You've got more chance of going to the moon and back in a day.
Bit like this takeover bid from Sheard.
Looks like thats gone t*ts up and you lot were already spending the 50 million a year and getting into the Champions League in 5 years.
Its never over till we need 4 points with 1 game to go :hihi:
Im sorry to say no ! but maybe next season i feel the blades will have a great chance and this is coming from a owls fan
This year is the easiest year in the last ten years to get out of the Championship, Stoke Bristol City sides like this in the top six poor sides,a pathetic league this year.
Which sums up the performance so far of both Sheffield sides United still have a chance due to the quality of sides in front of them they are certain to drop points if I was a betting man I would say about 20-1 against.
Might be worth a bet that! Im not sure, but anythings possible. The one advantage we have is that to a certain extent maybe the pressure of reaching the playoffs are off the players. And the ones in and around the playoffs might start to feel it in the next few weeks. Especially if we go on a good run.
I think teams like WBA, Charlton, Ipswich etc are starting to feel it. Who would have thought that Leicster would have won at WBA and who would have predicted the score line.
NERVY-OWL 16-03-2008, 21:04 never say never but even if you keep you're results going, you have to hope others will slip up. its a season where anything can happen though but i think next season is more realistic

Its hit a snag not t*ts up,the deal will be done for April but sadly to late for loan signings.Keep dreamimg of the play offs fella.
freyasdad 16-03-2008, 21:33 Realistically there is too much of a gap but as a someone said earlier the teams up the top end seem to be feeling the pressure.
Keep this run up and who knows.
NERVY-OWL 16-03-2008, 21:46 even if you blades miss out by just 3 or so points, you cant complain really. just a month ago it looked like you wouldnt get close
barnie41 16-03-2008, 21:48 Personally I'd written this season off, but having seen the match yesterday - if we keep going like that, you just never know.
If we play like that every game, I for one won't be complaining, wherever we end up.
bladebloke 16-03-2008, 22:39 errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr no
i think its been left too late too many teams in front of us have to keep losing and we have to win most of our games. the only glimmer of hope we have is that piggy1967 says no that must give us a chance.
happyhippy 16-03-2008, 23:39 I'd doubt there's any chance we could get there, but a positive end to the season may bring a positive start to the following season.
That would be as good as owt after the nonsense we had to endure for 3/4 of this season.
canadablade 17-03-2008, 03:35 Its hit a snag not t*ts up,the deal will be done for April but sadly to late for loan signings.Keep dreamimg of the play offs fella.
A snag to me means hes seen summat thats not right and will probably take his money or the Russians money elsewhere but, then again I could be wrong :o
I will keep dreaming of the playoffs and you keep dreaming of rubles coming to the Sty to save your sorry arses a bit like the tin cans did on Fargate in the 70's
Big club :hihi::hihi::hihi:
I dunno- look at the fixtures- its going to be hard as most of these have something to play for!!
Barnsley A
Preston A
Leicester H
Burnley A
Pigs H
Hull H
Bristol H
Soton A
Thats not the easiest set of games- i can see us winning 5 of them, drawing against the pigs and loosing against bristol and leicester.
Floridablade 24-03-2008, 02:37 I've got the Blades down to finish with 66 points, a draw with Hull and lose against Bristol City.
Floridablade 24-03-2008, 02:47 Sorry 69 points 5 wins 1 draw and 1 lose
mickdalewood 24-03-2008, 11:14 I think the Blades are 3 or 4 games short of a play off spot so i cant see it
They may well need to win all 8 games - but then, they needed to win all 11, and they've bagged the first three.
And now four...
SteveBlade 24-03-2008, 13:30 Well, we have a game in hand on a few of the teams, so then we would be only 3 points off the play offs. Its not impossible, and it isnt even highly unlickly, but i cant see it :( . Next season i reckon we will have a great chance if Blackie stays, or we get an equally good manager.
bladesman 91 24-03-2008, 15:00 anything possible, look at whats happened in fa cup this season
Tell you what, on current form I'm looking forward to visiting the lane.
Sheff U vs Hull City, a derby match between 2 in form teams, both with aspirations and aims and wanting to win.
It should be a cracker whatever the result (but this season we are somewhat going down our list of teams we owe a tigers mauling from the last few seasons, and checking them off as we go, so whilst this will make me no friends here, I hope we can carry on that list)
happyhippy 24-03-2008, 19:35 The thing is that I can't see the top five changing, and so if that's taken as read, there is one place to go for. If those currently from 6th to 11th inclusive play each other as well, then there are points guaranteed for at least one side above us, making our life even harder.
dazler1527 24-03-2008, 21:47 You've got more chance of going to the moon and back in a day.
:help:Could be worse, could be going down with the Wednesday:help:
Come on you red and white wizards
bladesufc1 25-03-2008, 12:16 I think the Blades are 3 or 4 games short of a play off spot so i cant see it
we've got 1 game in hand and are 6 points behind, my maths is rubbish but i can work out myself, :hihi:
I still think its a remote possibility but we should just take it one game at a time :D
al_partridge 25-03-2008, 12:54 Aren't you getting just a little bit carried away after a 4 game winning run?
It's alright talking about the play-offs but just a few weeks ago there were blades seriously pondering being dragged into the relegation scrap. You've beaten Plymouth, who are hit and miss (SWFC won down there as well) and three teams who are amongst the strugglers. Let's just see if you can carry it on against the stronger teams before talking about promotion.
thats the thing al, united only have to plat hull and bristol from the top half of the league, everyone else is in the relegation dogfight. I think people ARE getting carried away but everyone is beating everyone this year so you never know.
al_partridge 25-03-2008, 13:01 That's going to be tough, if we're in a position where we need you lot to beat some of the struggling teams for us yet knowing that if you do you could be in the playoffs.
We'd reluctantly have to be pleased if you win, if it helps us out. Let's hope that we manage 2 or 3 wins on the bounce as well so that we can pull clear and still hope you lose!
Aren't you getting just a little bit carried away after a 4 game winning run?
No. Merely pointing out that it's move from damn-near impossible, past extremely unlikely, to highly unlikely. :)
I think we could reach the playoffs but first i think we need to beat Preston On Saturday to be in with a shout then after that we should have every chance of making the playoffs providing we win all our 4 home games & get at least 1 win away from home either at Burnley or southampton.
Ousetunes 25-03-2008, 15:37 I'm not fussed whether we make the play-offs or not, after all, our record in them is dire and I can do without it, frankly!
But, let's assess a few points since the arrival of Kevin Blackwell:-
1, The leaky defence has been shored up and has begun keeping clean sheets;
2, A striker who could not hit a cow's arse with a banjo has hit a rich vein of form and is beginning to look like the kind of striker one should expect at what he cost us;
3, There is a collective unity in the team and a familiarity within that unit. Players who were running around like headless chickens under the previous managerial imposter are now playing to their potential;
4, The crowd is once again behind TEAM and MANAGER.
5, Any team with a late run-in of good results can make the play offs. Every season there is a Dark Horse, so this year, it could be us. Meanwhile, other teams who have been camped in the top section of the table begin getting itchy feet or simply tired.
It would be typical of the Blades to qualify so that we get the pleasure of watching us struggle and succumb at the last hurdle - again.
Earwiggo 25-03-2008, 18:14 It seems to me that Mr Canada's bricking it. He's obsessed with
this teko'er thing!
Play offs for the bacon striped ones?
I don't think so!:hihi:

freyasdad 25-03-2008, 18:34 Isn't there a railway line you could be playing on?

Actually I am bursting at the seams waiting to break into uncontrollable laughter at our little pink curly tailed chums in Sheffield 6 should this takeover fail.
If i was of the blue porcine persuasion I would be worried about the lack of any information coming from either side :suspect:
No reason to be bricking at all being a Blade m8, things are well and truly under control at BDTBL.
No fear of relegation, money in the bank, a great chairman,a great stadium, and a great manager again ;)
Out of those 5 I would say wendski have the the last one only :D
blueandwhite 25-03-2008, 21:28 Bricking it :hihi::hihi::hihi:

Humour me cb,which one ;)
The bad news is that some of the players are now thinking about the playoffs. I'd rather they were just playing football.

You really don't understand the Takeover Panel rules do you? Once the announcement was made to the Stock Exchange both parties were forbidden from talking about it, hence the lack of information released. If you want to jump to the conclusion that this means nothing is happening then that's your problem.
An announcement will be made either way in due course, whether it's on or whether it's off. But at least the continuing silence means that it's still on. For now!
Earwiggo 26-03-2008, 08:38 Bricking it :hihi::hihi::hihi:

Yep, you're pretty safe (unless you do a Teves) Yep you've got a coupla grand in the bank, you've got a 'good' chairman, A GREAT STADIUM ???????:hihi::hihi: and you reckon a manager that hasn't lost for 4 games is 'great'. Think again pal! Bob Paisley was great, Bill Shankly was great, Brian Clough was great. When Blackhead has won the Premiership, won some other silverware, had some kind of success in Europe, and is wanted by Real Madrid or Barcelona, then yeah, call him great!
'Til then? Grow up! .... and you are brickin' it !! ALL Blades are brickin' it !! By the way, there's no pink in blue and white! Loads of it in red though!
The bad news is that some of the players are now thinking about the playoffs. I'd rather they were just playing football.
There not though, if you listen to interview with them like blackwell and sharp they are all just saying lets take it one step at a time and we will see where we are in a few games time- which is the most sensible thing to do.

You lot especially you with this post make me laugh :hihi:
Read the above nonsense that you posted AGAIN.
Now answer me 2 simple questions
Who was calling Paul Sturrock KING :hihi::hihi:
And now since KING Sturrocko has gone who thinks Laws is the greatest thing since sliced bread :hihi:
Give you head a shake pal :D

yes but they have cut that one quote out of a whole interview where he was trying to play down the playoff, seth actually asked himwhat would it take for united to get into the playoffs- and billy replied with that.
blackwell on radio sheffield last night was also quick to play it down.
canadablade 26-03-2008, 13:25 Out with my Dad last night and he said...IF United make the play-offs I am going over and he said he was going to pay for me as well to go with him :o:o:o
Dont honestly think we will make the play-offs but its a nice little run we are on and bodes well for next season.

I was one and proud of it,he's twice the manager Laws is.When he was manager everyone thought he walked on water and could do no wrong. As soon as nobhead Allen had a falling out with him and sacked him, people talk about him been a poor manager.Honestly, there is nothing as fickle as Wednesday fans.

the take over all depends on whether wendys stay in championship so the rumour goes ,another part of same rumour will not go down well

There is not many managers that could live with that list and Mr Blackwell was touted to go to P.S.G as a coach before coming to the lane.
NERVY-OWL 27-03-2008, 00:27 completely agree with you blueandwhite. sturrock was an exellent manager, allen was wrong to sack him. who knows if laws will be as good, only time will tell

So being bottom of the table and having just been stuffed by Colchester 4-0 had nothing to do with it then?
natalie H 28-03-2008, 11:39 In a word - NO! :P
blueandwhite 28-03-2008, 17:46 So being bottom of the table and having just been stuffed by Colchester 4-0 had nothing to do with it then?

Earwiggo 29-03-2008, 17:34 Mr Canada,
1/ You don't have to be great to be a king:loopy:
2/ How many Owls say Laws is great?
He's doing a great job with some of the drongoes he's got playing for him.
Brian Laws hasn't had a chance as yet to show how bad, good or great he is, or can be.
I told you Preston were on a roll! tut tut .... 3-1:hihi:
Prestons manager must be great!
