neoteric 15-03-2008, 10:16 PM I know a few people have already shown interest so here goes -this Easter Sunday March 23 - surprise, surprise it's the same as last year when we had glorious weather for this walk and scoobz treated us all to some Easter cakes. I notice that scoobz is on holiday over Easter so it looks like it's down to me to continue this tradition.
For those wanting a shorter walk (3-4 miles) we'll be headed up through the beautiful Rivelin Valley, then anyone who fancies a longer walk, we shall carry on up Wyming Brook to Lodge Moor and then back to Rivilin a the total distance for the extended walk is approx 8 miles.
Those wanting breakfast before setting off meet at the cafe at Rivelin Dam between 9:30 and 10:00; the walking will start from the cafe at 10.30. This is a really nice walk, with Wyming Brook in particular being a spectacular climb, but also very rewarding.
When we reach Lodge Moor we can call at one of our favourite pubs the Sportsman, which serves exceptionally good home-made food, including a carvery.
Any would-be walkers who have been thinking about trying a walk would be well-suited with this one. As well as the delights of the Rivelin and Wyming, there are also spectacular views from up at Lodge Moor. Not to mention 2 great eateries and the promise of Easter buns as well! Oh my you will need this to walk off all those calories.
If you've never been on a Forum walk, and fancy a lovely Spring stroll in gorgeous countryside in friendly company, then this is ideal for you.
Also note I'm planning to do a shorter walk on Easter Monday as well - details to follow in a couple of days.
Third time lucky, I'm going to try again to join you all. Might set off on Saturday night and camp outside the cafe to make sure I make it :hihi:
Mmmm, sausage and egg sandwiches
inkie 16-03-2008, 10:00 PM Count us in - we'll do the shorter bit though as we need to back in reasonable time.
busy lizzie 17-03-2008, 08:57 PM Count me in too. I would like to do the longer version as I have missed two weeks and will have some catching up to do!!
scoobz 17-03-2008, 09:49 PM For the first time in goodness knows how long, I won't be walking this Sunday due to Billysmum and I taking a short break to Cornwall.
If anyone from the Forum is down that way and fancies meeting up for either a walk round Dodman Point, or a coastal path walk from Gorran Haven to Mevagissey or even an afternoon at the Lost Gardens of Heligan, just let me know and I'll start a thread so we can have an SF Cornwall meet!
Hope you all enjoy your Easter weekend, and that you don't get snowed in. But if you do, don't fret yourselves about us two cos IT NEVER SNOWS IN CORNWALL :D
canada_girl 18-03-2008, 11:18 PM Sounds great neoteric! Cookman and I should be there but may opt for shorter walk depending on packing commitments (unless everyone wants to come over to ours after the walk and help :hihi:) Unsure about breakfast at this time as well. . . .
Nooka 20-03-2008, 08:16 PM I wont be joining you this weekend, visiting parents and packing for my hols! :D The next walk I can do will probably be 20th April! I will miss you all! :|
Hemlock 20-03-2008, 08:23 PM We won't be on this one either - off camping for the weekend! See you all next week. Have a good one!
LinchpinLulu 21-03-2008, 07:21 PM We are going to try to do at least SOME of this walk, Neo.
Depending on SNOW and MOTHERS we should be able to do the walk as far as the Sportsman where we will probably have lunch.
If there's a blizzard, probably not:D

It was beautiful up there this morning see my pictures (http://picasaweb.google.com/neotericwalks/WymingBrookGoodFriday2008) - couldn't resist that sunshine. The forecast says heavy snow for Saturday night - but I will still be at the start unless it's really so bad that the trams stop running.
The Rivelin Valley/Wyming Brook parts of the walk are reasonably well sheltered - the only exposed bit is the road up to Rivelin Dam.
Just wrap up warm and hope the pub has a nice roaring fire?
Just have to play it by ear and be a bit flexible - bet scoobs is on the beach in Cornwall in his shorts and latest snazzy headgear:)
busy lizzie 22-03-2008, 12:02 AM i have just realised i haven't a clue where Rivelin Dam is! can you direct me please?
Will probably come in the car but out of interest is it walking distance from the tram?

Rivelin Dam is wrong - serves me right for cutting and pasting last years walk and just changing the date. Anyhow it's actuallly starting at Rivelin Valley Cafe, which is in Rivelin Valley Park - just off Rivelin Valley Road and about 10 mins walk from the Supertram terminus at Malin Bridge, I'm going on the tram and having breakfast at the cafe first.
I've put a Google Maps link here (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=rivelin+valley+road&sll=53.383055,-1.464795&sspn=0.258023,0.63858&ie=UTF8&ll=53.391176,-1.518095&spn=0.002015,0.004989&t=h&z=18&iwloc=addr)
inkie 22-03-2008, 09:23 PM Looking at the forecast - I think that we will have to give it a miss - hopeful for Monday though!
busy lizzie 22-03-2008, 09:52 PM thanks Neo, I might go on the tram too.
See you in the morning all being well.
scoobz 23-03-2008, 12:26 PM No snow down here in Cornwall :D , but definitely not shorts wearing weather!
We managed an 8 miler in fine but windy weather yesterday round Nares Head in S Cornwall. For anybody interested in looking this up on a map, we set off from Portloe, went inland to Veryan, then went on to pick up the coastal path at Carne Beach, returning along the clifftops to a nice pint of Tribute Cornish Ale at the Ship Inn at Portloe :P Really difficult walk as the path kept going down to the sea, then back up to the top of 1300 foot cliffs. Not to mention 32 stiles along the way, some of which which a certain young lady struggled to get her leg over :o.
We're supposed to be walking round St Mary's, one of the Isles of Scilly tomorrow, which we were going to do on Friday, but the ferry there was cancelled due to the force 9 gales. Hoping for better luck tomorrow, but am afraid there might be a bit of this --------> :gag: :gag: Watch this space!
scoobz 23-03-2008, 07:44 PM Anybody been today? Sat here in sunny, blowy Cornwall waiting for an update, please oblige someone :help:

OK scoobs just been watching the footie - you're obviously missing us:)
Well can I say it was another fantastic walk - our usual numbers were down because of the holiday and news of the impending blizzard, which never arrived; in fact it was a lot warmer than expected and we even had some blue sky and sunshine!.
Turnout was busy lizzie, canada_girl, cookman74, linchpinLulu + Mr L and neoteric, with a special guest appearance by Jess22 (but no walking) and I think I spotted Nooka disappearing into the distance at one point:hihi:
Just busy lizzie and neoteric left on the second leg of the walk up Wyming Brook, which looked quite Alpine with a covering of snow, I just love that place it's so beautiful - a magical kingdom.
I've put my pictures up here (http://picasaweb.google.com/neotericwalks/RivelinValleyAndWymingBrookEasterSunday23Mar2008).
Hopefully see a few people on the 5 Weirs Walk tomorrow.
busy lizzie 24-03-2008, 10:03 PM Great walk today, nice mix between Rivelin Valley which was quite a gentle stroll and Wyming which was more challenging. Fantastic views from the ridge at the top, although a surprise to suddenly see the town centre after the alpine forest! The wonders of living in Sheffield . Those that had to turn back half way missed the best part of the walk. Hope you are feeling better Canada girl?
Thanks to Neo for the Easter eggs.
LinchpinLulu 25-03-2008, 09:33 AM Another lovely trip up the Rivelin Valley and although we couldn't do the whole walk, still a good way to spend 2 hours on Easter Sunday.
Great photos of our proposed locations Neo :D.
Other SF walking group members might like to suggest a title for our proposed 15 minute short film about a journey following the water through Rivelin and Wyming Brook. A bit like Lord of the Rings, only shorter!
And thank you for the Easter eggs too Neo.
billysmum 25-03-2008, 11:28 PM I hope that you have saved my egg Neo. Just because I didn't come on this walk doesn't mean that I wasn't thinking of you all.:)
Hemlock 26-03-2008, 11:17 AM I hope that you have saved my egg Neo. Just because I didn't come on this walk doesn't mean that I wasn't thinking of you all.:)
So was I, so can I have an egg as well:D
scoobz 26-03-2008, 02:18 PM I don't want an egg, but I'll have a pint next time I see you, cos I was thinking about you Sunday as well Neo :o
neoteric 26-03-2008, 04:40 PM Well when I got back home I had 5 eggs left - but being a little bit peckish after my walks I managed to scoff the lot - I then went out and supped your pint as well scoobz. Was thinking about you all as I was doing this:hihi:
feargal 26-03-2008, 05:19 PM I bet it'd have been a different story if they'd asked for horse muck, eh Neo?! Good photos, as usual.
