View Full Version : Wine tasting - Spit or swallow?
When wine tasting do you think it's good form to spit or swallow?
I think it should be left to individual taste. Personally, I wouldn't look down my nose at someone using either technique.

Whats the point of wasting good wine?

Disgusting habits!!!
You are supposed to spit and drink water inbetween to get rid of the taste, but I prefer to swallow!

glug, glug arghhh!!
Foxxx is right you are supposed to spit but like everyone else says why waste the wine - swallow!
tslogf74 10-01-2005, 11:04 Depends if you have to drive home I guess.
msbehavin 10-01-2005, 11:15 from my own personal experience I would say it depends very much on who is holding the glass....
Sam Miguel 10-01-2005, 14:32 Exactly. Wine drinking is a complete culture on it's own.
A few years ago my wife bought me wine atlas for xmas. It was wonderful. To learn about the wines of the world is like learning to make love all over again, but but less messy.
Wine is the most underrated drink of all time: The British are still learning.
Australian dry whites (nice an green), Rioja ( both red and white) , Anything by Torres, Pinot Noir, Chablis, zinfandel, white grenache..and there is still nothing wrong with a nice chilled glass of Aussie Chardonnay.
AFTERTHOUGHT: Italian and German wines - don't even try to get there.

I agree, swallow! I've been to a wine tasting sessions at vineyards and there swallowing was done. However, there was a bucket or a copper jug into which the rest on the glass was emptied. I just downed the lot though.
Off-topic....

Good wine is always matter of taste, but in my opinion you will be hard-pressed to find a white wine better than a German dry Riesling. Forget the Liebfraumilch and the Hock, that's sweet rubbish made and exported for the UK (!) market. As Johnson's Wine Guide recommends, go for dry Rieslings from the Rheingau as well as Chardonnay. And as for sparkling wines - try German Sekt instead of champagne, far cheaper, tastes just as good if not better and is better than Cava any day. Stocked at Waitrose.
Also getting better are English whites. Watch this space.
tslogf74 10-01-2005, 17:22 I love a red rioja. Never pay more than £2.99 for wine. I actually find the expensive stuff tastes worse. The one exception to the rule being a bottle I bought from a french service station for the princely sum of 4 francs. I wouldn't have used that to pickle onions. It's probably the only bottle of wine I never finished.

I thought Torres was going to by nice however, I was very disappointed. I openned the bottle on Christmas Day and did not get past the first glass, and I'm not genarally very picky.
As for spitting or swallowing, I would have to agree with the majority and swallow it.
