Hello,

Just come across a problem. Basically ive reformatted my pc. Using Windows Xp Pro. My problem is my normal C: drive is F:
Now I cant change the drive letter in Computer Management from F: to C: because its the main drive, boot up etc..

Now I was wondering whether someone could possibly provide me with an MSDOS command which would allow me to change the drive letter?

Many thanks Rick Miles

You can't.
If you go into your motherboard's set up, you can change the drive which the machine boots from.
If C: and F: are on the same volume [physical drive] you have messed up with the partitions. Are you sure you are not booting from the CD rom?

If you just want to change the dos command prompt from F: to C: then just type C: and press the return key

There isn't a command in MSDOS to change a drive letter as far as I can remember.

You used to partition the hard disks with fdisk and the system used to assign letters dynamically on boot with C: being the first primary active partition found . Do you not have a C: drive at all at the moment then or what? Try running fdisk /status to see what it's assigning where.

No ive not messed anything up or got partitions.
What the problem is (never experienced this before) is im using a raid card. Been running great for the last year. 4 drives with striping. But its started to get clogged up with rubbish so I decided to format it. Did exactly the same as I have ever done. Pressed F6 for external driver. Used the same disc as before for the drivers. Then usually update them in windows if needed. But got into the setup area and instead of usually displaying 1 drive of 132gb (because its in raid) it shows 4 seperate drives and there capacities! Really queer. Whats even more weird is that Its showing they are raided in the raid bios. but when im in the windows setup area they all appear seperate. Which is why its appeared as F:. The other drives arnt connected at the moment. Ive deleted the raid and just running this one 40gb drive on Raid Channel 1 - Primary Lead. Suggestions would help

It sounds like whatever happened you didn't successfully install your RAID drivers when you went through your setup and it's chosen the 4th disk as its windows disk. The reason it's working as a RAID now is that it has loaded the driver as part of the normal windows bootup process but missing out on it right at the install has b*ggered it when you needed it most.

I'm afraid the only thing that makes any sense is to reinstall and make sure that you get it to recognise the RAID and not four seperate disks right from the get go.
