I bought a Pocket PC yesterday, and I'm having difficulty getting my laptop and the Pocket PC to talk to each other!

I followed the instructions, but the connection wizard says it cannot detect the new device, however I get another pop-up saying that windows has discovered new hardware!

Any ideas greatfully received!

Have you installed the drivers for the new device so that Windows can 'talk' to it?

The CD is still in the drive, but it still won't work

Active sync is notoriously flaky Kristian. Try plugging in the USB cable with the PPC already in the cradle, after a reboot.

Then you can check the ports one by one. Another program often tries to take over a port, and doesn't let PPC through.

Don't be surprised if it doesn't work though.

Have a look in Device Mangler and see what it reports the cradle as....

You have to install drivers for the hardware (the pocket PC) on your main PC, so that it knows how to talk to it.

Once that is set up, you can configure ActiveSync, which uses that connection to synchronise things like calendar and contacts.

If you want a close analogy, what you're attempting is like trying to get Office to run on a PC that doesnt yet have Windows installed.

What kind of Pocket PC is it?

(of course, I could be talking b****x if Windows already has drivers for that hardware.... it's been known to happen before;))

What version of Activesync have you got - 3.71? If so then Microsoft has launched V3.8 which is supposed to be more stable.
Head to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads and search for it.

Guys, thanks so much for all your help! I'm not at home at the moment, but will try your suggestions tomorrow once I'm sober, after the effects of the alcohol I am about to consume!

I'm notouriously bad in fixing things when they go wrong, so I might be back on here tomorrow shouting :help: !
