I have read a few threads and wondered if someone could tell me the best place to go to get a dog from, was thinking of Spring Street but by the looks of things there are more places to go to rescue unwanted and stray dogs and what are the costs.

have you tried the breed rescue centres, just put up a search for the breed and put rescue after it. Or Thornbury rescue centre at Todwick, they have their own web side. Been up there today they have a couple of rotties, a lovely well mannered gsd male, a white husky and some smaller x breeds. Hope you find something soon and give a dog a loving home.

What sort of dog are you looking for do you know? It may be worth writing down what it is you are actually looking for in your dog.
ie - energy level of the dog, temprament - like must be good with dogs/cats/kids, age, sex, breed, coat type (long/short), etc., etc., or even answer those things with you dont mind.

then also think what you can actually give the dog - ie amount of exercise you want to give it etc.,

Once you are armed with those thoughts - its easier to go and have a look round.

If you don't you will go to the pounds or rescue centres and just fall in love with something, but it may not be suitable for your life style.

Also, there are differences in where you rehome from - some places are cheaper than others, but don't offer the same things to you. A rescue centre should have done some deeper assessment of the temprament of the dog and you can probably take it out for a walk with another dog. At a pound, the assessment is very minimal. Some will offer first vaccinations and spey/neuter in with the adoption fee, others wont.

Prices vary from about £70 being the lowest to around £150.
