Applegrim 14-03-2008, 10:05 PM Can anyone give me some advice please, we have a one year old Sheltie (quite large for a sheltie) but he's terribly travel sick, we have tried a herbal stress tablet from the vets, plus another herbal type from the pet shop, both to no avail. The vet can give us a tablet just for travel sickness but they are £13.00 each, which seems a bit steep just to take him up to Graves Park.
Does anyone know of anything else? The breeder must have known as she enclosed a leaflet from a brand which can be bought at the chemist, does anyone know if this is safe? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
katkin 14-03-2008, 10:15 PM Hi, Ailsa is not a good traveller either. Lotti (dalmation Lotti) suggests you try giving your dog a ginger biscuit as ginger naturally soothes the stomach. Also, some dogs get sick because they can see out of the vehicle when it is moving- if your dog can travel in a dog crate in the boot or back of the car and you put a blanket over the top so that he can't see out, that might help too. Some people try Bach Flower Remedies including the Rescue Remedy and the one for travel/ panic which I cant remember the name of. I've also used skullcap and valerian - you can buy tablets from Dorwest herbs. What brand does the breeder suggest? I think there's one called serene-um
Oh - we enquired about prescription tablets from our vet when we were taking Ailsa to Scotland- the vet said they knock the dog out and it is dopey for several hours which is not really ideal so we didnt get them
Applegrim 14-03-2008, 10:36 PM Thanks Katkin, we've tried the serene-um and another herbal type, now he does go in his cage, but not tried the blanket over, so that might be good, and the one the breeder sent the leaflet on was from the chemist and they were for people. Has anyone used tablets for people? I am worried they might not be safe even as a childrens dose.
Lotti 14-03-2008, 10:51 PM Dalmatian Lotti! ha! Like it!
Does he actually get stressed in the car? Or is he quite calm but just gets travel sick?
You can get a spray of Dog Appeasing Pheromone: DAP which you spray onto his bedding that's in his crate and it naturally calms by simulating the pheromone a bitch gives off to soothe her litter.
Also - can he see out of the car properly when in his crate? I've actually found it helps if my two can see out (although obviously try the blanket as well - trial and error!), if they can't see they stress and jump about to try and see and that can make them car sick - if you make sure they have a clear view out, they don't have to move around to look - if that makes sense?
Also - give the ginger biscuit a go, but only feed half and it can help to withhold the meal before going so that the dog's not travelling on a full stomach.
Good luck!
keely 15-03-2008, 01:03 PM we only ever had one sheltie that was travel sick, she was a very nervous dog so was probably stressed by it all.
one of our chihuahuas gets terribly travel sick. mum always sits him on the back seat in his bed, with his blanket and a toy. she takes a bottle of water for if he needs a drink, and takes tissues and nappy bags for if hes sick.
he also gets stressed easily so there could be a connection.
try to keep your dog relaxed and let them get out and have some fresh air and a walk every so often (if your making stops)
medusa 15-03-2008, 01:26 PM Molly's travel sickness appears to be true travel sickness (she's not stressed by being in the car and is happy to go out daily in it, it only happens on long journeys or after she's eaten etc) and I have also found that she's better when she can see out of the front of the car rather than the side windows. She's very good at orientating herself so that she's facing where she's going- on buses she likes to sit in the gangway watching out of the windscreen too. If we go on a long trip we skip the previous meal and feed her when we get there and that seems to help, as does having plenty of fresh air in the car (note to humans- wear your coat if you're in my car because I'll have the window open for the dog!).
katkin 15-03-2008, 01:32 PM We have the windows open too- every time we buy a car we have to get one with electric rear windows and air con - for the dog!
Applegrim 15-03-2008, 09:05 PM Thanks to you all,we don't feed him before a journeyand we've tried him in and out of his cage, I've got the ginger biscuits at the ready and the blanket( it's a bit like camping out) but the last time we went from Woodseats to Bradway, we had planned to go further but decided to get some advice,Would it be safe to give him a travel tablet for children?
xxhunniixx 15-03-2008, 09:08 PM why not try rescue remedys or calmers.. im sure these are safe for dogs not sure on the amount though
