If anyone has any other nice pics of our great city - please post them!!! for all to see.
wybourn, park hill, pitsmoor, tinsley manor, spital hill, etc are CRAP AND I DONT CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS.
It's quite simple really. if you don't like certain areas, don't go there. Spend time in the nice bits, of which there are plenty!

Jeez! why do we have to always get one unpleasant, nonce who goes against the grain for attention!! if you dont like it then make a thread about it - don't come on here and ruin a thread about 'HOW BEAUTIFUL' Sheffield is with your unagreeable ramblings!:loopy:
i live in tinsley and its crap im hoping of moving out of the area like in hillsborough or crookes.
Thanks Unisol, those are beautiful pics!

I doubt the good people of Hillsborough and / or Crookes would want a miserable wretch like you living nearby ;)

I totally agree!
In my back garden, just between a couple of plants, in my border, there is a bare patch of soil, about eight inches square, without anything planted in it
(the rest of my garden looks ok, incidentally).
Should I therefore describe my garden as "cr*p", because there is a small area that doesn't match up to the rest.. (or even worse, slate the whole of the district where I live, as being cr*p, because of the bare patch in that flower bed?)
or, rather....
should I just get off my backside, and start digging in, and making a difference, and plant something in that space, rather than just bemoaning what a dreadful place my garden is??????
(just an analogy, showing how ridiculous it is to slate an entire area/city because of a very small minority who make nuisainces of themselves etc)
sheffield is a lovely city.
sheffield is a really, really safe city (see home office stats that show we are something like the eighth safest place to live in the UK)
sheffield has some really nice areas to enjoy, loads of excellent, and often picturesque parks and green spaces
sheffield is full of friendly people.
it feels like it has a village-y atmosphere.
we can boast that we are the home of the births of great advances in metallurgical technology, thanks to bessener inventing the Bessemer converter, and Huntsman creating Stainless Steel.
we have one of the best "red-brick" universities in the country, with one of the best reputations and one of the most popular choices after oxbridge (particularly the medical school) in the country.
we have about the best retention, of student graduates in the land (that is students who graduate, and then settle in the city) so the city, surely can't be that bad, if so many choose to remain.
(I am assuming that most of the grumblers and nay-sayers are'nt natives...?)
so, i say to the grumblers,:-
"we have a hell of a lot of things to be proud of, in Sheffield.
"et's be proud of this brilliant city we live in, and let's be positive. alternatively, if you can't be positive., then STFU, and let the majority speak, who DO think that this city is the best."
P "wouldn't live anywhere else!" T
(and ps, lestat:- duff:- those pics are ace!!! it just shows waht a great heritage this city has)
Well it just goes to prove how many of us walk about with our eyes closed and take for granted what we've got around us. If we all stood back occasionally and looked around and absorbed, we may all be very surprised at what there is to see. Excellent pics everyone. It certainly shows us what it is the Americans like to see when they visit , lovely ornate old buildings, that we don't even see when going about our everyday lives.
ilaria - you have cr*p areas in any city. I spend a lot of time in zurich, in super rich switzerland - its a lovely beautiful place, but even that has some appalling areas and vagrants etc.
thebadger 10-03-2005, 17:54 Quite right miggy, can't think of a city that doesn't have dodgy areas
Been in Sheffield for five years now and absolutely love the place. True, certain areas are run down or neglected but one thing that Sheffield has is bags of character. I really despise people running down certain places just because they don't fit in with their ideal utopian image of paradise. I have travelled extensively all over the U.K. and seen many soulless places with their hearts ripped out all in the name of progress. Not so Sheffield, it has a charm which seems to enchant many visitors to this fine city. In fact, most of my friends in Sheffield come from other places. I certainly plan to stick around.
sorry miggy its just that i think sheffield has no respect for foreign people especially tinsley and other certain areas im sick and tired being called a white bitch, slag italian whore etc etc get mty drift.and yeah evrywhere i move i get called names theres no need for it i think the whole has no respect.
Well, I am looking for more pictures to show. I can only host 4 at a time, i'm top tight to pay for extra storage for now.
So will take my time in picking them.
And just a few miles from the city center we have wonderful views like this.

Try using www.muchos.co.uk, they allow you to host more.
Those pictures of sheffield are really lovely except the one of Arundel gate. Its that type of architecture, which to me is really ugly & deppresing. I get the bus to Dronfield from that part of Arundel gate & I just think it looks so cheap & totaly ugly as sin.
DanSumption 11-03-2005, 11:27 And just outside Sheffield, we've got Magna which is pretty beautiful:
http://www.sumption.org/life/magna20011020/
Oooh, great photos Dan! They are fantastic!
Magna is so cool, that fire tornado is great.
I love the fire tornado, may go with my cam to snap up some pics there, got some good ones there dan:thumbsup:
Well Here are 10 more pictures (http://photobucket.com/albums/y23/duffman1982/?action=view¤t=factories214.jpg) for you to enjoy:)
Some I found on the net but most I took myself
Good stuff Duffman. The rooftops one is quite strange... if you look at it for long enough it makes your eyes go funny - like one of those magic eye thingys!

haha yes! if you stare long enough it turns into a pony playing pool with four of his friends......i'll stop now before i go any further:loopy:
Yeees?! I liked the poppy one too, although I read the inscription as "poopyfield" before the picture came up!
Poopyfield eh? I must change this at once, but of course I put that there to see if anyone would notice and get a laugh out of it........ :suspect:
NO!! It was my bad reading skills I think! I've been reading the farting thread too much.
Well you had me there, i got to the edit section and saw no mistake  lol it's ok I forgive you;)
DanSumption 11-03-2005, 20:19 Just spotted some more beautiful Sheffield pictures that I took a while back.

Grat pictures Dan, I have some sunset ones in the Bradfield valley, i will try to find them out. I love it, sitting and watching the sunset, makes me feel all good inside when I feel down, and some peole want to slag off this city:loopy:
Duffman, Absolutely brilliant pictures mate!! Just goes to show that if you look at Sheffield from a positive angle - it is such a great place to be.
Cheers lestat
I always go out with my eyes open looking to find a good picture. I have loads ay home what I have taken on my walks in the countryside.
C'mon, i'm sure many more users have some great pictures of Sheffield let's see them.
rubydazzler 12-03-2005, 21:11 i've really enjoyed looking at the pix you've posted ... that's another great thing about Sheffield. The amount of talented, creative, innovative people we have that live and work here.
Most of these people are just "ordinary", "run of the mill", working people ... and it's something that we've always had too. I bet if you were to look back just at all the clubs and societies formed to cater for all tastes from sport to amateur dramatics/opera over the years, Sheffield would have more than most other places of comparable size.
And that's in addition to the "famous" people ...Sheffield, and its citizens .... just gotta luv it ... :D
 <<<< not forgetting this little guy ....
Some nice pics of Sheffield on this site,
http://www.hedgerow.co.uk/images.php?cat=sheffield
Like the one with the Supertram in the snow.

And finally, one of the most well known Sheffield landmarks:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v233/lestatt209/SheffieldBDr.jpg
I love the ski village one, think that is a fantastic view of the city. We need a large Sheffield sign, a la Hollywood across that hill next to the slope.
Ruby this is for you:banana:
There's plenty more pics of Sheffield here:

More sheffield pics here (http://photobucket.com/albums/y23/duffman1982/?action=view¤t=botanicalgardens.jpg)
Enjoy
Damn right!
Sheffield is the greenest city in england, and i think thats a big thing considering 100 years ago we were probably one of the filthiest grimey citys in the country what with all the smog etc.
In reply to someones post earlier in the thread Huntsman, who invented the crucible was from Doncaster, but lets not shout about it ey :P
Still the name of sheffield means alot in the metals industry.
Add to that all the landmarks and attractions that sheffield has, like ponds forge, millenium gallery, peace gardens, meadowhall (even if it is an awful place to shop)
Pistol Pete 13-03-2005, 10:35 I love these panoramic shots I found a couple of months ago. Especially the ones from Bolehills and the long gone Furnival Square underpass.
Panoramic Photos (http://www.shef.ac.uk/misc/personal/ad1kg/joinedup/sheffield.html)
Love the shots of Stannington hill, I have been wanting to take some of that for ages to send to my friends in other countires.
Just added some more pictures that I have found, some are my own and some are what I have found.
Sheffield pictures (http://photobucket.com/albums/y23/duffman1982/?action=view¤t=Queensheadpub.jpg)

Bump* Anymore for anymore? I love to see pics.
DanSumption 15-03-2005, 19:20 Duffman, your change of avatar really confused me there. I thought I must've accidentally shifted to a parallel Sheffield picture thread.
Out of interest, has anyone thought of doing a survey of the number of people on here who have a Blades badge as their avatar? It's bloody confusing, it is.
Looking at these piccies is really making me proud of my City - thanks guys for showing positive images of the Steel City!!

Well spotted Dan. Perhaps some of them should change to a little Wednesday badge... there doesn't seem to be much sign of those! ;)

Hehe Sorry Dan, I think there are few people that have one, so yes it can be confusing :hihi:
redrobbo 15-03-2005, 21:44 Thanks to all for the fantastic photos. Makes you appreciate our lovely city and environs even more.
espadrille 16-03-2005, 04:59 When I was a teenager, I really did not like Sheffield.
It is only as an adult, that I can appreciate th really positive things that Sheffield has to offer.
It has really beautiful surroundings.
The only thing that I wish would really improve is the City Centre shops.
I know that we have Meadowhall, but 2 weeks ago, I went to Nottingham to go to Long Tall Sally.I am almost 6 ft and they cannot afford Meadowhall rates, so I have to travel to either Leeds/Nottingham.
I was astonished.
The City Centre was absolutely packed full of shoppers. It was like the Saturday afternoon shopping that I remember as a kid.
Nottingham has its indoor Shopping malls, but it is right in the centre and people can make the choice .
I hope that the centre of Sheffield can be improved. There are lots of bargain shops, which is great ,but it would nice to have some unusual quality shops also

Hope that cleared it up for you

One of the things i like about the city centre is the independant shops, especially for clothes.
I'd hate to see the city centre give way to national chains, however i do feel a Harvey Nichs or Selfridges would really help to attract shoppers back into town.

Unisol: here here.... Sheffield does have some great shops especially on Division Street but most of them are named clothing and cost a friggin fortune - goldigger etc £60 for a t.shirt a little on the expensive side.
Yes Orange in the Forum - very good value for money and Joanne Colton who owns it changes her range every season and makes alterations/clothing to fit.... dont know anywhere else who does that for free.

I buy quite a bit from Sa-kis and Brother2Brother.
I know both owners so get a little discount. Both these shops sell mostly good quality clothes which obviously reflects in the prices.
Having said that, the owner of Sa-kis told me he's also trying to attract the student market by offering good quality clothes and affordable prices.
On a bit of a side note, I was in Barcelona at the new year and did quite a bit of shopping but found the assistants to be absolutely useless!! Some decent stores but again, all national chains. Certainly made me appreciate the shops we have which sell one-off stuff that you're unlikely to see everyone else wearing.
levitate_me 16-03-2005, 13:21 anyone going 2 urban smackdown @ ponds forge 2day?
Anyone got any peak district pictures? I have books galore with them in but would like to see some pictures taken by the forum members

It's so good to see that this thread is actually uniting people in praise & appreciation for our city!!
We always tend to get people moaning about bad roads, scruffy areas and no go area's, well - just by looking at some of the pics on here and hearing comments from Sheffielders & non-Sheffielder's - it's good to know that we live in a city to be proud of. :)

I wholeheartedly agree there, we do have a city of beauty and we should appreceiate it. Every town and city has run down or 'bad' areas and we as a seem will always focus on these and the negatives. People forget we are the only city to have a national park in our boundary, I myself live less than 1/2 mile away from the official boundry, but yet I am also on 30 mins on the bus away from a city centre. I myself wouldn't live anywhere else in the country.
I went out today for a walk to Dam flask with the dog and took my camera, saw some great views and scenery. However, when I got my camera ready I realised I had left the memory card in my pc and my camera has no internal memory  :x    :shakes:
So I just had to carry on walking without the facility to take pictures, I will go tomorrow weather pending with camera and card in place

Q. Is that why you're called duffman?
PS Did you remember to bring the dog back?
Moonfire 18-03-2005, 17:14 It makes me feel quite proud that we live here :D :D :D I have been feeling a bit down lately about the place but that has reminded me that there can be nice areas that I just take for granted :)

duffman,
I would love to show you some photos of Northern California, where I live now, and where I grew up.
Unfortunately, I'm not very good at tech stuff, and someday (when I have time) I'll have to open an account and upload some pics to photobucket.
I have a teenager who's very good at computer stuff. Looks like I'll have to twist her arm, and enlist her help. Whether she wants to or not. lol
In the meantime, here are some pics taken by a professional:
http://www.enlightphoto.com/califgal.htm
I especially loved these pictures taken of Mt. Diablo and the East Bay Area. This is where my family lived, and where one of my sisters and my parents still live. I looked at Mt. Diablo every day of my life when I was a kid. It positively dominates the landscape. In summer, the hills turn gold.
http://www.enlightphoto.com/webpages/caebay/caebay1_10.htm
This is the flat pasture land that stretched for miles in every direction, that sadly, is being gobbled up by builders and just more people moving into the area. Surprisingly, quite a bit of it is still privately owned.
http://www.enlightphoto.com/webpages/caebay/caebay2_14.htm
By the way, the town of Livermore California (part of the tri valley area of Dublin, Pleasanton and Livermore. 35 miles east of San Francisco) was named after Robert Livermore. An English sailor who jumped ship in San Francisco Bay, made his way east and married a mexican woman. He received a spanish land grant. Which I suspect was what he was after in the first place.
http://www.elivermore.com/photos/Hist_lvr_robert.htm
And yes, it does snow in California! Not alot, and mostly in/on the mountains, but we do get some white stuff now and then.
http://www.enlightphoto.com/webpages/caebay/caebay3_11.htm
Hope you enjoy the pics. And if you have more of Sheffield, I'd like to see them. You have something we don't have and that's history. Everything in California is so new.
Is that your dog in some of the photos? Cute pup.

They are great pictures of the US, hope to see some from you (or your daughter) it's not difficult at all to set up a photobucket account, everything is easy to use and the same goes for a digi cam.
The dog is mine in the pics, she was loving it when we had the snow a few weeks ago, so I thought i would get some pictures of her.

Lestat, that is an absolutely beautiful and atmospheric photo. Thank you. And thank you for reminding us all what a stunning city we live in. After all the moans and badmouthing of Sheffield on this Forum, it's a treat to be able to sit through a thread and enjoy every (well, nearly every post).
We need reminding every now and then of how lucky we are.
For all those who knock Sheffield, Just look & feel proud:

Have you seen the refurb that they've given to the Barcleys buiding in the forground? Brilliant.
Nice pic too. Theres some more at http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=11795201#post11696142
Smashing pics everyone. What the "knockers" seem to forget ( or don't know)is that Sheffield was a highly industrialised city for about 150 years. With lots of steelworks, heavy engineering works and foundries. So there will be run down areas and probably will be for the forseeable future, but eventually they'll disappear. Sheffield in the 80's & 90's went through a very hard time, newcomers won't know that, and its a tribute to Sheffield and it's people that it's pulled itself up to what it is today. There are far,far worse places, as many can testify.
