Hi I am Moon,

I was a single mum for a short time - but in Barnsley.

You may want to try the childrens information service. They can give you a list of all your local playschemes and stuff like that.

Childrens Information Service (http://www.childrenfirst.org.uk/)
Homestart Links Page (http://www.homestart-sheffield.fsnet.co.uk/links.htm)

Homestart has been badly dubbed "rent a friend". basically they match you up wth one of their volunteers who comes out to give you support and help you find other support and services in Sheffield.

I found it hard breaking through the cliques in the playgroups myself and gave up.

hope that bit helps and good luck!

Hi there

I have heard of the organisation Gingerbread for single parents (www.gingerbread.org.uk). Not being a parent myself I haven't tried it but I think it's supposed to be quite good.

Also if you go to your local library they will no doubt have posters and leaflets about exactly the sort of things you want. Ask at the hospital when you go too - they should be able to put you in touch with other new parents near where you live.

Hope this helps.

Hey Suzi,

I know there are Mother and baby groups in Walkley. Best to give them a ring before you go...

First steps toddler group - ebenezer Methodist church, green how street - birth to four years. Margaret Oldfield - 234 9083
Fir street toddler group, in the community centre - Ian Powell 286 3105

There's also the Children's information Service on leopold street that we've found useful - 275 6699.

Best of luck...

Hi Suzi

There is also the Hillsborough One Parent Group based at Burton Street School on thursday evenings. Contact number is 2966159.

HOP organise adults night out, occasional day trips, group holidays and activities for children.

Worth trying.

I've been to just one round here as a dad with 18m girl. I went to the one on Denby St. one wednesday afternoon - weird place but nice fellow attendees - couldn't suss the vibe with the staff role - seemed to be the place for parent support sessions from t'corporation.

The one on wed. morning just off carter knowl road (edgedale road) has been recommended to me.

We use real nappies - ie terries - and if you're considering that then head over to the sheffield real nappy network - meet wed morn. www.srnn.co.uk
I found the 'nappacino' mornings really great - welcoming and useful chance to swap tips, support etc. Definitely recommend that one.

We have just moved here from london and are slowly finding our feet - this forum has helped loads.

Good luck

I have a friend who's pregnant (and is in fact due to have her baby any time now! I've permanently got my mobile turned on waiting to hear something!) and I know she's been going on this website:

http://www.baby-greenhouse.co.uk/

There's message boards on there too. I'm sure my friend has found it useful and supportive. She's met up with some of the ladies that she's been chatting to on the message boards and has made some new friends.

Well myself I have gotten out of a bad relationship in the past where I had been looking after a 3 year old and a 6 year old at times. I like to help others - and I'm not looking for anyone at all so set your mind at rest that way. Lol!
And anyways this is not personals.sheff-forum... Lol!

I do have a car so traveling every 1 or 2 times per week or whatever would be needed is not a chore, I do like kids of all ages so I can help should need be, and I don't mind ambulance service should it be needed - someone just find me a flashy blue and I'll be doing the job most happily... :D

Damn - you just want to know where to find self-help groups. And I could offer you soooo much... Lol.

Take care and all the best for you and the little one.

Sheffield Wildlife Trust hold a community cafe every Thursday, they have a great parents + babies / toddlers group in the morning, really friendly atmosphere, everyone welcome, lots of people go on their own - but always find someone to chat to. Tasty & inexpensive food & drinks too.
Find them at Victoria Hall, 37 Stafford Rd, S2. Near Norfolk park. Phone 0114 263 4335 for more info.
