Friday February 10th 2006 saw a very special gig at Sheffield’s Boardwalk. Featuring a line up composed entirely of artists who'd met through a mutual appreciation of the work of Sheffield’s finest Richard Hawley. Most acts were brought together through a shared interest in Richard’s internet forum (www.richardhawleyforum.co.uk), or were musical collaborators and friends. All proceeds from the night, known as “OR8 OUR KIDS” went to Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity, a charity of which Richard is a patron and is close to the hearts of many involved with the organisation of the night.

The show featured Julian Jones, Damian Sackett, Taste Of Shotgun, Dave Sleney, Hanging On To Harry, and The Lonesome & Penniless Cowboys, who were joined on stage for a magical guest appearance from Mr Hawley himself. Over £1,100 was raised by the event in total.

On Sunday March 16th it’s happening all over again when “Or8 Our Kids 2” takes place. This time the venue will be West Street Live, who are kindly providing the venue free of charge. The line up will feature Dave Woodcock & The Dead Comedians, Dave Sleney, Plush & Plastix, M&J Blues plus some special guests, the return of The Lonesome & Penniless Cowboys. The Manchester band proved a massive hit last time out, and feature noted harmonica player and percussionist Clive Mellor who regularly features in Richard’s own live shows and has appeared on various recordings. It's an eclectic line up that will provide something for all, including each act performing one cover of Richard's work. There will once again be a raffle on the night with some top prizes, and forming the centrepiece to the evening will be the auction of a custom made electric guitar that features the signatures of Richard Hawley, The Arctic Monkeys, Heaven 17’s Martin Fry, and Def Leppard’s Rick Savage among others. The guitar was made in Sheffield by local man Tony, aka ‘Guitarist’ (www.myspace.com/tonyguitartist), whos previous creations include guitars made from Harley Davidson parts and also working chainsaws! The guitar is designed to have the appearance of a Swiss Army Knife, and was last year on display in Harrods where it was due to feature in a charity auction in aid of the Children’s Hospital. Unfortunately that event fell through, but luckily Tony has kindly donated the guitar to our event. Also featuring the signatures of another local favourite Paul Carrack and Saxon’s ‘Fasker’ there are also some touching inclusions on the back of the guitar. When it was made it was taken along to the Children’s Hospital and carries the names, signatures, doodles and finger prints of several children who were being treated there at the time. This is a completely unique item that we hope will raise a lot of money for both causes involved. This is the only item that will be up for auction on the night. If anybody would like to make a bid for this special guitar in advance of the event, please e-mail your offer to or8ourkids@hotmail.co.uk. You will receive an e-mail confirming your offer. When the auction takes place on the night, the bidding will start from the price of the highest bid received in advance of the event.

This time it's been decided, in light of recent sad events surrounding Richard's family, that the proceeds from the night will be shared between The Sheffield Children's Hospital Charity and St. Luke's Hospice, both charities of which Richard is a passionate supporter.

Prizes for the evening’s raffle will include a limited edition book by Sheffield music photographer Chris Saunders featuring numerous pictures of Richard taken over the last few years. These are extremely rare and have only been available via charity auctions on eBay where they usually sell for hundreds of pounds. Also featured will be a Gretsch pickguard signed by Stray Cats legend Brian Setzer, 3 signed 7” singles from Little Man Tate, tickets for various sporting events including Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield Eagles, Sheffield Steelers, Sheffield Tigers and ‘the dogs’ at Owlerton, plus various other music related prizes including CDs, gig tickets and much more, including signed Richard Hawley merchandise.

Doors for the event will open at 8pm, and entry is £3, every penny of which goes to the 2 charities involved.

There’s also a chance for those from home and abroad who can't make the night to get involved and donate via Justgiving.com for the chance of a special prize at: www.justgiving.com/or8ourkids2 The minimum donation is just £2, and anybody who donates at least that amount will be entered into a draw. The prize is a signed limited edition gig poster from Richard Hawley's sold out homecoming show at Sheffield's City Hall in December 2006. The cut off date for entry into the draw will be March 31st, and the draw will take place as soon as possible after that date.
