This morning there was a god almighty rap at the back door, a chap is stood there offering to do gardening. He walked past the front door and came round to the back without knowing if it's our main door. Even the postman comes to the front and he's here every day.
What was dodgy is that he didn't go to any other houses on the street. After being refused, he jumped back in his car and drove away.
My partner wrote down his description, the car reg. number etc.
He feels that it was someone looking either to nosey at what's in the house or do a reccy on how to get in. I've had quite a few attempted break ins, even while I've been home and perhaps my house looks vulnerable.
Would you report this to the police? Anyone else been offered gardening work?

This sounds very suspicious to me; I'd call the police and let them know!
Hope it works out ok for you!

i agree with Kristian
it does sound very dodgy indeed and if you have got a discription and reg number then yes very definatly take it to the police it could just be that he has tried it on with others or it could save someone from actually been done over ( house) i dont think the police will think you are wasting their time :)
i hope you dont see him again soon

I must say it sounds a bit strange if they only came to your house. I'd have a word with your community bobby if you can track him/her down.
No doubt you have already thought about this, but can you make your back garden more secure? I know this isn't easy if it's a terrace or shared path, but even a noisy gate can act as a bit of a deterrent I think.
Also, when I moved into my house Neighbourhood Watch gave me a pack with some ideas for making your house more uninviting to burglars... police station might be able to help with similar. Good luck!
Thanks for your replies everyone.
I called the police and I felt a bit stupid telling them but, better safe than sorry.
We've got a gate and security light at the back of the house but we aren't double glazed and I think that doesn't help. The back garden is very accessible but the house itself is like Fort Knox. A lesson learned after previous events.
We don't leave anything valuable in the garden and I've got barbed wire at the back, threaded in between the trees, people/burglars used to come through that way but haven't bothered for about 2 years now. Wonder why :D
We are vulnerable in a way, just because our garden is accessible and most of our neighbours aren't. Ideal for a burglary if they thought they could get in through the bazillions of locks, bolts and alarms.
Anway, the police took the car reg, a description, time and direction of departure and made a report.
So, if anything happens we've got a history and plenty of info.

might it be a good idea to let us know what kind of car hes driving...dont need the reg yet till someone thinks they have had same fella around..... something similar happened here few weeks ago .ill cut ya trees he said for £50 after i caught him wandering by the back of my house...i said no thanks mate he said ok then have em done now ill charge ya £40, i let the dog out for a sniff round ...he decided he was going then when he saw the rotwieller. he was in a car too.......didnt go anywhere else only my house!!!
OK, that seems fair enough.
He was driving a red Rover 25 with 51 plate.
30-35, probably not a local accent, dark hair and tall.
That will do. I don't feel anymore info will benefit anyone and I am aware that this guy could be genuine, just a bit unlikely.
Hi I have had a cctv camera on my property back & front for 6 years & a notice saying security lights & cctv are monitered at this property, touch wood I have had no problems, but before we had 2 cars broke into on the drive. They are cheap you can get a twin pack at B&Q for under £50.Good luck.

It's a common tactic taken by thieving *******. When I lived in previous house in a student area found people on more than one occasion poking around back garden, one even knocked on door and said my mother had asked him to come round about a strimmer the day before - funny that being that it was me and 3 mates who lived there. Houses either side were young shared households too. I took great pleasure in informing him and his mate that I'd pull their legs off if I found 'em near my house again.
