As a newbie to the city, ive yet to experience the summer months in sheffield..so to cheer up the gloomy mood were all in from the current climate, i thought it might be a good idea to discuss/recommend some good places in town to drink in the sun?

Cheers

Chris

Hammer and Pincers if you're staying within Sheffield city limits. The Barrel above Eyam if you're in the country.

The Sheaf View is a good sun trap, although I know the no-smoking rule on the terrace means it doesn't suit everyone.

I do think Sheffield is lacking decent beer gardens compared to other cities, although the smoking ban might have improved the situation this summer as pubs are trying to make the most of their outdoor areas. Couldn't really tell last year as I'm not sure we had a sunny day after the 1st July??

Kelham Island Tavern - excellent an award winner (Russell St)
Fat Cat - Also excellent (Alma St)
Both easily accessed from Shalesmoor Tram Stop

I like Sheaf view, but not exactly the most picturesque beer garden?
Rutland Arms used to be nice, don't know if the new owners have kept up the planters tho.
I think we have a distinct lack of nice outdoor drinking areas in Sheffield.

Bad news I'm afraid. We don't have summer here, it's like this 365 days a year (and this is warm for us)!

Only kidding (kind of).

Flightlevel's recommendations are spot on, but add the Riverside, round the corner from the Fat Cat.

The new Leopold Square should be where to head for on a summer's afternoon/evening. You can sit outside the Leopold Hotel or Platillos and drink away to the sound of cascading water. It has a cosmopolitan feeling.

The Ha! Ha! Bar used to be good for outside drinking and a cool glass of Pinot Grigio outside Ruskin's overlooking the theatres is recommended too.

There are more, further afield (stunning views at Three Merry Lads, Old Horns at Bradfield and Rose and Crown in Stannington) but I reckon you're casting your net more locally?

As rubbish as it is in some respects - beer being one of them, The Nursery Tavern beer garden I am rather fond of, it just has a nice buzz and a hot summer afternoon/evening on Ecclesall Road is somehow really quite nice. However, it doesn't have stunning views, much in the way of non-standard beer and does attract a discernibly young crowd - not always a bad thing though and as a result you couldn't call it pompous or staid at all, it's about as relax as it could possibly get.

I am not a student but the beer garden at sheffield student union is always worth a visit when the sun is shining.

The Rawson Spring at Hillsborough has a nice beer garden, and if it gets chilly, you can switch on the outside heaters. Cheap beer too, and good food!

Well we now have a beer garden, although the view is currently of a brick wall, I plan to introduce wall murals, art and far more plant life shortly.........in this part of town, there are no other beer gardens at all.....

I always found that the Peace Gardens and Endcliffe Park served my outdoor drinking needs extremely well. ;)

some great suggestions, ill make sure i check these out. Kelham island tavern and fat cat are ideal as im just around the corner from them!

Do any of these play some good music or are there issues on noise pollution?

The Rutland Arms beer garden is better than ever. Tim, who runs it now, is one of the nicest landlords in any pub, anywhere. Great beer too. The Plug own the lease but there are rumours they'll be selling it again, which would be a real shame when it's so good as it is. Probably my favourite pub in Sheffield right now.

The Red House up Solly Street has a nice terrace out back. Right sun trap!

Vine......like an Ibiza terrace in the summer!

Most definitely the vine on a sunny summer afternoon if you can get it on a day when the DJ is playing laid back trance (usually bank holidays or some Sundays) - its like being transported to a whole other world in the middle of Sharrow ...

By the way the Broadfield is not too bad either new and improved - cept its also an area for smokers ... and the Nether Edge Tavern has a small outdoor beer area and the Union an even smaller one ... not forgetting the Porter Brook (overlooking the river Porter) and the Psalter and the Lescar outdoor area in Ecclshall which is very good .... I could go on !
