Im trying to find the family of william marsden who went to st matthias school. My mum many years ago bought a very old book called deeds of gold and inside the book it says awarded to william marsden for good conduct and industry during the half year ending jan 1895 and signed jno ibbotson. I would like to trace this family and return the book to them .

Perhaps if you post it on:
www.sheffieldfhs.org.uk
a relative may see it.

Marsdens were also Ice Cream makers and Caterers, based at Sandygate. They were bought out by Northern Dairies. They had the first espresso coffee bar in Sheffield, on Pinstone Street. The founder was AT Marsden and with a date of 1895 it should put his family right into the frame.

Hi Jessiet

If you live in Sheffield you could check with Sheffield archives to see if the admission registers for the school are deposited with them. Admission registers give date of birth, parent/guardian and address. There is a 75 year closure on these but 1895 would be outside the closure period. There might also be a mention in the school log book of any presentations. The only problem I can see is if there is more than 1 William Marsden around this time at the school.
