Hi Jack
Cant help very much I am afraid because after the Lizards & Square Circles I didnt see any of the guys after they became Bitter Suite. I am pretty sure from memory though that there wasnt adrummer with either of those groups. So perhaps someone with more knowledge of Bitter Suite can help. It would have been late 60's I refer too Jack.
Talking about vivid memories of the KING Mojo Chris Farlow was one of my very clear memories & Barry Marshall used to do an equally fantastic job of singing " Out Of Time". I also remember Ike & Tina as a great night & what about .

THE WHO

Totally agree about the no alcohol at the club too, I cant remember the name of the pub we used to get a pass out of the club & visit but it was just down the road & no one stayed long because the club was too good to miss.
Another memory was Rod Stewart he was there on a few occassions wasnt , not changed much full of himself even back then & fowl mouthed.
Did like his music though. Spencer Davies another good night or three.
Could go on for ever. Stringfellow certainly had an ear for the "up & comings "didnt he

When going in the early days to the Mojo to see Long John Baldry one of the things I remember was seeing the latest uniform of dark green combat jackets and a rolled up blanket which became a sort of uniform for a while.
I think it was a bit Dylanish/Hippy/Donavon in 64.

In the first half of the 60s we didn't get to see too many other acts as we ourselves were busy gigging most nights of the week, this was the before the WMC scene when most gigs were pubs, church halls, youth clubs, weekly dances such as the Memorial Hall Hillsbrough etc, we played Coal Aston Village Hall every Wednesday and too many others to mention or remember.

By the late 60 the emphasis seemed to to have changed to a more WMC orientated playing scene with the enthusiasm and expectations of the earlier part of the 60s a thing of the past.
Groups/Bands no longer congregated in Fitzallan Square discussing the forthcoming gig whilst waiting for the group van (usualy Bedford Doormobile or Thames 15cwt) to pick them up.

PS has any 60s only former band members got any of their stage wear from those days, I surprised the guys from our former band at a recent get together by showing them the Blue Lurex suit that I still have from 1963.

SHAPE OF THE RAIN BACK IN THE STUDIO AND RECORDING ONCE AGAIN!

Great News, ..... Legendary Sheffield Band Shape Of The Rain, have been in the Studio for the last few weeks and recording again. Ian 'Tag' Waggett - Drummer, says 'that all the original Members of the Band have been involved. They have been using modern recording equipment to 'revisit' tracks from their Classic 'Riley, Riley, Wood and Waggett' Album, which has become something of a Collectors Item and that they are planning to release a CD in the near future showcasing the result'. He also said 'that hopefully some new material will probably also be recorded and that Fan's hopes for a Reunion and some Live Performances might become a reality'!

BIOGRAPHY
Shape of the Rain are a band from Sheffield , founded around 63/64 by Keith Riley, his brother Len, Brian Wood and Ian Waggett. They started out called The Gear and then The Reaction. ‘If we couldn’t get gigs because they didn’t like us, we’d just change the name, If they liked us we’d stick with the same name,’ says Keith Riley. The band’s first professional recordings were in Nottingham in 1966. They released an album called “Riley Riley Wood and Waggett” in 1971, which was produced by Tony Hall. They were influenced by American West Coast music and the British psych/progressive scene as well as many other styles and came up with a sound that was all their own.Twelve string and slide guitars were used to create a different sound to what was then the norm. They played The Marquee, London, The Cavern, Liverpool and Manchesters Hard Rock and Magic Village. They supported bands such as Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Free, Fleetwood Mac, Love and Joe Cocker, as well as many others during their time as Sheffield University ‘House Band’!

Found you post on S.F, i know it was over 4 years ago, but just joined, if you, or anyone who remembers Square Circles, would love to hear from you.
I think you forgot to mention bass player before Jerry Scanlon, Ronnie Harwood, sadly no longer with us, also former drummer Fred Guite

Hi busy.p
Looked at photo, it does look like Fred (99% certain), but i knew Fred when he was about 16/17 when he had short hair and dressed in suits.
if you can get hold of a book called "Not Like a Proper Job" theirs a photograph of him in there when he was with the Lizards, pg223.
I last saw Fred at Woodhouse Central W.M.C. where he was standing in for your dad playing drums, that was in early seventies. wish you well in your search.

Hi busy.p

I took the photo of the band. The guy on the left in the photo was Frank White's base player, He used to wear a tan brown suede jacket with tassles on the arms (very hippy at the time) The same as Dennis Hopper wore in Easy Rider. In fact he had the same moustache. He also used to wear a hat (Hendrix type) if I remember right and he always had a girl on his arm.
Mcluskeys Apocalypse turned up and played near the entrance to Weston Park. I am pretty sure this was the day Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac turned up and did an impromptu acoustic set. I remember it being a sunny and warm Sunday afternoon. After the free concert we all de-camped to the "Raven" for a pint or two. If this was the free concert when Pete Green turned up I am sure it would be the summer of 1970. If anyone can confirm the name of the bass player and the drummer, I can re-title the photos on Photobucket.

Hi Billy.
Many years, long time no see. How are you. I have just read your forum entry. Yes, I remember Ronnie Harwood. You and him always exchanged expletives as I recall. All the good times in the back of the van. Drummer was Phil, if I remember. We had a photo taken at Sheffield Star, but lost it only recently when we moved to Retford. We should get together over a pint. Have been in touch with Janet Olsen in Australia. Did you go out with her? I went out with her best friend Jean Preston - do you remember? So much to talk about, but this is a quickie so that we can delve further into our murky past. Remember your mum & dad well - Esther if I recall.
This is just a quickie to get the ball rolling
Get in touch soon so that I am talking to the right person.

Yes, Mick Wilson did play with McCloskeys Apocalypse, along with Dave Seville and Ray Higgins. if you can get hold of a copy of a book called "Not Like a Proper Job" theres a 4/5 page write up about them.

Hi Lostrider: sorry can't identify the bass player, Frank White had numerous bass players, but i'm 99% sure the drummer is Fred Guite. If you Get hold of the book " Not Like a proper job " it may give you a clue. Good luck.

I also have a copy of the book that you mention in your message Billy D, Im sure Freddie would find what is written about him hilarious if he was here, I dont entirely agree with some of it, pity there couldnt have been more positives. People that are very talented do unfortunately bring out the green eyed monster in people. Short fuse yes, schizo he was NOT, I know because I was also blessed with the 'short fuse', infact I would love to have a chat with Mal Hooley and Dave Hopper!! Graham Oliver got it right.. he was 'amazing'!!..and he was blessed at having dress sense which we also inherited from our parents, but he didnt need to dress to impress anyone, he was born with something only others could dream of having. He had a short life but boy did he live it to the full! Fred Guite senior was a much respected musician and would have known all the answers to everyones questions regarding bands and musicians over descades.

Im pretty sure it is Freddie in your pic Lostrider with Frank, I have similar photographs of him when he was sporting the 'afro' and others with that very same kit. The pic in the book isnt of very good quality of the The Lizards, I have the Sheffield Star feature where the photo in the book was taken outside the Cathedral and not forgetting the single that was released with The Lizards 'Hey Baby' :-)

Hi Billy.D
Have made various searches over the years (SF, Friends Reunited, and more recently Facebook) trying to find an old mate; Ronnie Harwood.
Ronnie and I were next door neighbours on the Lowedges estate back in the late 50s and early 60s. Started our own group around 1961/1962 - The Fauvettes, with Ronnie on Base, myself on Rythm, Ronnie's cousin on drums and another couple of mates on Lead Guitar and singer. We didn't have much success, but had lots of fun trying. Ronnie moved on to the Square Circles and myself onto the Wildcats. We lost touch after I got married and moved away from Lowedges. I now live in New York.
Unfortunately, I now see from your post above, why my searches were unsuccessful. Are you at liberty to divulge what happened to Ronnie?
My personal Email is geoffreyhb@optonline.net

Hi, TheDrib'
I played with Ronnie, in The Square Circles, and we also lost touch, as you do, until probably about 3-4 years ago i was in my local pub, The Waverley, where the resident Friday night group, "Martin and Friends" play, it's always full of old groupers' from 60's and 70's. When they were doing their spot, i thought i recognized the bass player, and lo and behold, it was Ronnie, we had a good chat about the old times, i asked him where Christine was, remember Christine, his girlfriend?, they had married , and divorced, i also asked him about Roy Simmonite, the drummer, who was from Lowedges too, was he the drummer with you and Ronnie ?.i gave Ronnie my phone number to get in touch, but he never did.
A few months later i saw Martin in the pub, and asked him about Ronnie, what a shock i got when he told me that Ronnie had died from cancer, it really knocked my duck off. i'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Ronnie was a great kid, and a great bass player, and i'll always have fond memories of him.

Hi Billy.D,
Many thanks for your quick response.
What a shame. You are right, he was a great kid. I wish we could have stayed in touch over the years but that would have been tough with me working overseas and before the internet became so universal. We had some good times together as teens. C'est la vie.
I do remember a girlfriend of Ronnie's back in the 60s called Christine. She also lived on Lowedges, and I think her maiden name was Mather.
I also remember Roy the drummer. His group was a little more successful than ours at the time, so 'no', he didn't play with us.
Did you by any chance know a guitarist called Roger Millard, who also lived on Lowedges. He was our lead guitarist, and used to play Orange Blossom Special with his guitar (a Burns Black Bison) behind his head. No Joke! He also moved on to the Wildcats before I joined them.
Again, many thanks for your help. I'll definitely have a quiet drink for Ronnie tonight.
Take it easy - Geoff

Hi Bassman62.
That's an awesome pic of Ronnie. I haven't seen him since the mid 60s, but I can see the resemblance in there. He always seemed to have an 'impish' smile on his face.
I'll send a copy to my sister in Sheffield and maybe she can get a copy to his sisters; Julie and Shirley. I know Ronnie's Mother was killed in a pedestrian accident some years ago at Meadowhead - not sure about his Father.
I hope that wherever he is, he is joining another group with some of the other musicians who have sadly left us over the years.
I guess we will all be looking/auditioning for a position somewhere in the future, in one of those groups. It will just be like old times.....

Hi "TheDrib" from 62 onwards I was playing in the Sheffield group/band 'The Drumbeats', the shot below was on the Derby Locarno in 64.
We regularly played the Hillsborough Memorial Hall, a venue most of us played in those days.
The Bass I'm using was a short scale Burns Split Sound 6 string bass through a Vox AC30 purchased from Cranes in the Wicker, the guitarist Hayden is using a Gretsch Green Double Anniversary.
I chatted to Ronnie a few times about the Memo gigs.

Hi, TheDrib.
Yes i remember The Wildcats, though i didn't know any of them personally, and vaguely, remember the name Roger Millard, but there again didn't know him personally.
There were a lot of local groups in and around Sheffield in the 60's, makes you wonder where we all found gigs to play, and yes, i played Hillsborough Memo, it's still there as well, though looking a bit run down just like the rest of us i suppose.
I have an old photo of Ron, when he was with Square Circles, I'd post it on S.F. but don't know how to, so I'll send it to your personal e-mail if you like.
All the best, keep on rockin'.

Hi Bassman62;
Thanks for the great photo. Some good gear in that pic, and 'yes', I remember the Reslo mikes. I have repaired many of their 'damn' cables - I used to be the 'fixit' guy since I was into electronics at the time. Speaking of Gretsch, I purchased a 1960 6120 back in the early 90s. Just wish I could play it as well as Chet Atkins used to.....
Take it easy and hope you are still playing.

Hi Billy, we worked for your Dad some years ago, he was great and straight with us with the added benefit that most of his work was local unlike some of the other agents who farmed you off with out of town agents, we also worked for 'Little Albert' (Hitchen) another one whose work was local.

As i remember, my Dad managed most of the top groups in Sheffield at one point, including Bittersuite, Johnny Calender & Seventh Heaven, Green Carnation, and Fresh Ground, but to name a few

The Tremors were a Derbyshire band, we used to go to Lathkilldale Hotel every Sunday to see them. No bands on in Sheffield in those days.

Mikey, they've all played G&T's in Hoyland?

We used to make the same trip weekly to Lathkildale and I can well remember Jimmy Crawford and the Cadillacs. Always an interesting journey home pre breathalyser!!!

So many memories flooding back - I wish I was back in Sheffield in the sixties.
I remember Dean Marshall and the Deputies, one of them had a Jazzmaster!
Also remember Albert Hitchen, wasn't he known as Mr 10%?
As for the Lathkildale Hotel - loved that place - played there when I was in Who's Who?
The landlord had 2 or 3 gorgeous daughters!

Are you their manager/agent?

Hi Bassman,

Thanks for your question. No, I'm not their Manager/Agent, I'm just a Fan who used to see them in the 60s/70s at local Youth Clubs and Pubs such as The Black Swan etc (now The Boardwalk). I and many other people thought that they were Excellent Live as well as the album that they made being more than Noteworthy. The album I have just mentioned has become something of a Collectors Item, fetching very unusual prices on e bay. They are even quite expensive on Amazon.

As you have probably read in my previous Posts, they are now recording again. They were well known during the period I have mentioned and had a Good Following. In their time they supported Famous Bands such as Fleetwood Mac, Cream, Love and Free, please see Biography for further info. I'm just trying to spread the latest news about them to fans as well as those interested in the Sheffield Music Scene Past and Present.

Take care,
R;);)

WE used to [ my pals and I ]
follow Joe [ Vance arnold]
every place he played at, we loved the music, but I was in love with the drummer, he did not know I existed.....he had a cute blonde girl friend at the time.
I was so jealous of her.
Did any one go to the twisted wheel, in manchester ...we did . met the animals, the rolling stones and many more groups
We used to hitch hike from Sheffiels to Manchester , many weekends,,,,,looking back now it is a miracle we are still alive....or parents thought we were at each others houses...

Hi Britrose,
Whitfender,Joe's number 2 guitarist. The lad you were fancying was Dave Memmott,he was our second drummer who took over from Steve McKenna, our first,... another 'Andsome' 'Arry'. Steve was our first real drummer when Joe came 'up-front'.
The little blonde was Sue White, whom Dave eventually married,as far as I know they are still together (quite a rare occurrence these days),In fact, both Bob Everson, (Hank Marvin lookalike and Joe's original school pal and "Bass man") and myself, are all still married to our original wives with many children, and now grandchildren between us.
Thanks for the memories,...all the best. WhiteFender.

I am so glad to come across the forum. Greetings from Dallas, Texas. My family knew the Blue Harmony Boys very well. They played at my fathers NCO club in Sembach, Germany between 1959 and 1963. They were booked in by an agent named Giesela Gunther, another family friend. I have wonderful memories of them. We traveled to Garmish with them in the winter one year. They spent many hours with us. We visited them in Sheffield when I was about 9 years old (1960 or 1961) and stayed with a local family there. I will never forget it. We have number of pictures of them if anyone is interested just email me and I will provide them. The drummer was much older than the others and his name was Jock. Where are they today?

My cousin Dickie Hardman founded the The Blue Harmony Boys in the fifties.
His father Jack Hardman was from Sheffield and was musician with a few bands and played in the Lyceum Orchestra. He also played in the Band for Billy Smarts Circus. When the film Cicus of Horrors was made starring Anton Differing, Smarts Cicus was used and Uncle Jack was conducting the Band.
Uncle Jack and Dickie lived on Ecclesall Road near the corner of Thompson Road.
The Blue Blue Harmony Boys spent a lot of time in Germany playing at the large US bases.
The band appeared on Holiday Town parade broadcast from Skegness one summer. With the advent of the group scene in the sixties fashions in music changed and the band broke up,but Dickie was still going Solo in the early eighties.
At that time he was based in Sunderland where he had a small Hotel

Would love to hear who still is alive from the Blue harmony boys. They were good friends of my family in the early 1960s in Germany, They played at my dad's club in Sembach at the U.S. Air Force Base. I have pictures of them which I can share with anyone interested. We visited them in early sixties in Sheffield - great memories.

The Vagabonds was Jimmy's band name, I believe they chose Vagaband, there was always a problem over money, Jimmy wouldn't pay for a roadie or driver, even on TPTS they had to lug their own gear whilst all the other acts had roadies.
The band finaly left about 20 years ago (except Jimmy's son Mario) due to being expected to do Minehead one night and Ayr the next without roadie or driver and all for peanuts.

They were based in Huddersfield but played a lot in South Yorkshire from 1965 to 1975, and were a RnB band mainly. Fred Denton came from Darton nr Barnsley and he's my father-in-law. mossdog? The barn was in Fiddlers field Mr Fiddler was the farmer on White Lane and the barn was once mentioned in The news of the World[ when you only read it if your mam was not looking.].
As to the cryptic, Tall dark handsome , female i hope!
Or cyclist I.E. black cape, white steed or do they by any chance call you Ann.

Dave Rawson, brilliant guitarist, absolute **** of a man.
Hi Captain Chaos, are you the same Captain Chaos I used to get out Motorcycling with in the 80's and 90's. (Mick McPherson).
Must agree with you there! I remember Dave with the band "Dizzy Spells" I was frequently seen at their gigs and took guitar lessons from the man himself. I have not seen Dave for something like 20 years now. Does anyone know know if he is still playing? He was also a great oil painter, his landscapes are out on this world.

I see some of you know Albert Darley ex-Glitter Band. He was one of my close friends during the 60's and 70's, but we lost track after I moved away from Sheffield. Does anybody, by any chance, happen to have his e-mail address , twitter or facebook? Thanks a lot. My name's Alan Parker and was also Albert's class mate at Hatfield House infant & jr. school.
