View Full Version : Best sport/exercise for toning up?
la_que_sabé 12-03-2008, 09:53 Hallo
I go to the gym and have lost over 3stone but am only using the CV machines. Whilst I think I have lost enough weight for my size, I really want to get toned up (everywhere). Can anyone recommend a sport/class that is really good for this, where in Shef it is located and prices if poss?
kbfighter 12-03-2008, 09:59 In my opinion boxing is the all round sport for fitness and conditioning.
iamthemoon 12-03-2008, 10:13 got to agree with the above.
any kind of fighting especially stand up is HARD WORK. you dont have to fight just do the training and you will see if not feel the effects almost immediately
evildrneil 12-03-2008, 10:50 Theres really no such thing as "toning" - a toned physique is one with muscle mass and a low enough body fat that you can see it. If you have lost the bodyfat then hit the weights and build up the underlying muscle...
Merry_Legs 12-03-2008, 10:53 Kickboxing and climbing worked for me - definitely better than the gym!
Swimming

Simple answer is that you need to find a sport that you enjoy, so that you will stick at it. All have their pros and cons.
nic_scarlet 12-03-2008, 12:43 I do lane swimming before work, but I'm not sure how much it helps as I only do (fast) breast-stroke, I can't do front crawl.
Tartempion 12-03-2008, 13:03 Try kickboxing. There's a women's class in the city centre - PM chefkicker for info. That's a good work out and he's a nice guy too - not scary like some fighting types can be (no offence intended to anyone here!)
Otherwise there are women's boxing classes you could try - I think there's one at 393 club on Langsett Road in Hillsborough. Or I'm sure the major leisure centres have things like that on too.
I think it's a good idea to join a class - then you feel more motivated to keep going at it. For example you can see how you're improving compared to others, and how hard you need to be trying etc.
getphysical 12-03-2008, 16:12 You have to do some resistance training. This can take the form of weight training or using resistance tubes; swimming - the water acts as resistance; boxing or martial arts - the punching & kicking actions will again act as resistance & help to develope muscular tone. If you are already a member of a gym then I would suggest a simple programme using weights. You can get more ideas from our web site www.getphysical.co.uk
If you are female don't panic weight training doesn't make you big & butch! I'm a female instructor who has trained & taught weight training for years. Congratulations on the weight loss.
getphysical 12-03-2008, 16:16 Just noticed another post advertising a circuit training class at Hillsborough, now that's really good for toning!

If you're female (or if you're not?) then I've heard pole dancing classes are really good for toning up because you use every muscle in your body.

A few people went to a pole dancing thing at the Posing Pound down attercliffe.
Stiffness was the biggest problem, I assume the unstructor didn't do a proper cool down
diamond890 16-03-2008, 15:17 Pole dancing is definately a good way to tone up, since starting lessons i noticed my tummy muscles had toned up within a few weeks.
But I also agree with kbfighter, boxing is the best form of exercise it is so difficult at first but really tones your body up and improves your fitness loads

I agree too . Boxing is the best to tone up your body and drastically improve fitness levels. Why not add a KICK to it and include even more fitness and toning though ;)
KickBOXING is another alternative to boxing or other forms of fitness

metaphoria 16-03-2008, 16:24 I find a combination of cardiovascular & resistance training, together with stretching exercises is the best way to tone.
red_hearts 16-03-2008, 20:48 I find rowing pretty good for toning although maybe a little repetitive.
staceyuk24 19-03-2008, 16:05 Hi, well done on your weight loss. Boxing is fantastic as you work all your muscles, and just FYI Toned acutally means movement, so you really want to tighten up and make everything firm. I am a qualified boxing coach & I run women only boxing classes on a mon, wed and thurs eve at Manor ABC Boxing gym, i've lost loads of weight doing it and tightened up ;-) so if your interested please don't hesitate to email me on staceybarnes83@hotmail.co.uk
