View Full Version : Rant about Dogs roaming the streets
Just coming back from dropping my sister off and her friend. When suddenly, i spot this dog 15-20yrds on the pavement disappearing behind this parked car, so i took my foot off the ecelerater and yes you can predict what happen it came running out straight into the path of my car, i slammed my breaks on to do an emergency stop but in the wet conditions the car skidded and i manage to clip the dogs slightly and it just kept running. So i turned the car down the side road in the direction it was going and search down people pathway and adjoining streets for about 15mins to no avail. Why do people allow their dogs to run freely on the streets especially at night. Yes i know some dogs escape from back yard ect, Now tomorrow i've got to go to the police station to fill an incident form. Or get this i could be prosecuted for falling to report an RTC. I just hope the dogs ok. This happen on chaucer rd parson cross at 21.15 tonight To the dog OWNER. The dogs was medium size black or gray shaggy looking so if this sound like your dogs and it appears injury. Advice to have it checked.
Moonbird 10-03-2008, 21:49 You would be suprised how late some dogs are out roaming, I have seen them running about at 2am and beyond, its a disgrace... they must just put them out for the night
tinkabel 10-03-2008, 21:52 What really annoys me is my dog escaped from the garden, shes never usually out on her own and i had to pay £70 to get her back from the dog warden. The people who let their dogs out all the time never have their dogs picked up

No they won't because they let them out after the dog warden is done for the day :suspect:
I'm just back from walking my dogs, only to have been followed for the last 10 mins by 2 dogs, one with its nose up Durhams backside (Durham wasn't too pleased:( ) the other a black gsd x barking at us from a short distance, all in all intimidating and very annoying.
I swear one day I shall lose all sense of responsibility and let mine go free to tear into them..... if indeed thats what they would do anyway, I'm sick of being harrassed by strays and dragged about by mine trying to get to them
Rainrescue 10-03-2008, 23:11 If you youngsters cast your mind back to a few years ago - dogs used to be roaming the streets a lot more maybe 10 years past. This has certainly decreased and the dog wardens do manage to pick up more - which is why the stray kennels are full.
However, after April this year - things will probably be much worse. The police will no longer be able to hold or help anyone with a stray dog and so once the dog wardens are off duty - if you see a stray dog, you can't take it to the police stations. I believe every local council are making arrangements for where people can take dogs to during certain hours - but it wont be 24 hours. So, goodness knows what will happen to the dogs. No doubt wandering and roaming all night poor things.
They should be safe and not allowed to roam - walked on a lead - and not just kicked out to do their business before bed. I know there are occasions when our dearly beloved think the grass is greener - my little minnie the minx just walked out of my gate not so long ago, and went off to see the world. I was frantic and maybe only then realised the stress and heartache of what its like to loose your own dog but also it awakens you to how dangerous dogs are just wandering around on our busy roads of today.

think i have seen the same dog you are talking about, it is always roaming the streets it sounds like it had a lucky escape this time,
i have no idea where it lives but its often seen on fulmere rd area,
doubt the owners will notice if its injured as its wandering day and night:(
pinkgirl 11-03-2008, 08:25 I rang the dog warden yesterday, as one is wandering the area
been a real pest. Rang them at 9.am, rang again at 12
as he was still around so far today not seen it so it hopefully got picked up
We sometimes see a greyhound wandering near us and other half has seen an Akita at the roundabout above Meadowhall many a time late at night.
Dunno about wandering dogs but those two bl**dy things that attacked Ailsa in October had another go at her again on Sunday - and the git who was with them was miles away (across the other side of the park), showing no interest whatsoever in his dogs and just watching as they attacked our dog- nasty piece of work. One managed to draw blood but thankfully this time it wasnt a vet job and not deep enough to require stitches. Folk like him dont deserve to own dogs if they cant control them and dont want to control them.
angellic 11-03-2008, 09:43 Theres always loads of roaming dogs in shiregreen, some pitbull type cross was harassing my rott and it wasn't getting the message to f-off despite her grumbling at it, not long before that there was a huge mastiff roaming about...

Yeah I live in Shiregreen too, it never ceases to amaze me the variety of dogs you see at night, dogs I have never seen before in the day time.
I ended up getting up at 4.30am with my dog and I could hear one running up and down the road adjacent barking in all the wind and rain, bet it was the same black dog that was barking at us earlier.
I wish the dog warden did a night shift ... mind you the pound would be even fuller then, of dogs from this estate

I have to agree here, who knows how many more dogs get attacked by these two, if they are so unpredictable they should never be offlead.
hels1977 11-03-2008, 16:24 I went to put some rubbish in the wheelie bin the other evening, around 10pm I think and was confronted with a seemingly aggressive barking medium height dog right outside my door (it was dark, I guess a bit bigger than a collie). I didn't think it was scary at the time because I just told it rather firmly to go away and then approached it rather than turning my back - and it backed away slightly but continued the barking antics at me.
Only after I closed the door again did I feel scared and think "there's a dog roaming the streets which could easily have bitten me and it was being a little too brave and boisterious barking at me like that in MY flipping garden outside MY front door ".
I feel sorry for the dogs - left out all night and up to god knows what :(

I hope the owner's do note if it is injured at the end of the day it's the dog that suffer. I felt awful afterward not knowing whether it was alright. Even travelled along the same rd earlier today just to see if i could spot it. Well been to police station and reported it. So i can rest assured i've done the right thing. Just hope the dog ok.
Matchstick 12-03-2008, 11:46 I was walking Guinness last week in our local park and we were playing a nice game of ball, (so Guinness was off his lead) when a stray dog game bounding up to him, it was wagging its tail so I thought it was ok but then all of a sudden it went for Guinness, and I had to get it off him and chase him away. I checked Guinness over and he was fine, luckily his harness seemed to protect him. I now feel quite nervous when walking Guinness on my own.
