View Full Version : Travelling In America
BruciesBabe 09-03-2005, 08:41 Hello All,
Is there anyone out there who fancies taking 3 months out to travel Northern America and Canada?
I have no idea what to do or when, I just know I want to do it!
It doesn't have to be for the full 3 months, buts thats the max you can have over there without visas and they are a knightmare to get hold of.
I'm basically looking for any game girls or boys who would fancy a challenge and a wicked time in the great U S of A.
FYI, I am a 27 year old female.
DaBouncer 09-03-2005, 10:21 Why not go and work on a Summer Camp?
I worked for 3 months @ www.campgreylock.com back in 1999 and 2000 and loved it.
You could do something similar.
In fact there is a pic of me still on the website - not saying which but it's there
BruciesBabe 09-03-2005, 10:26 Cool thanks for the advice. I'll have a look into it, but I really want to do the travelling bit and see it all.
I'm now intrigued re. the photo!

You need to check this with the visa because I don't think you would be able to go back and forth between the USA and Canada having entered the USA on a Visa Waiver. Have a look on www.holidaytruths.co.uk they have a forum especially for america and many of the users are very clued up on visa issues but I feel sure I saw someone asking about travelling between the 2 and back. Either way you need to check this out thoroughly first.

the camp thing is a really great way of seeing one area in particular and earning a little cash to go see other bits [and it gives you a longer visa to travel on!]
BruciesBabe 09-03-2005, 11:11 I will definately check the visa situation. I'm just looking for advice and a travelling partner at the mo.
I know the camp thing is a great way to see one place, but I definately want to do the old state to state travelling.

I have done this no problem landed in USA to visit family then to Canada to Visit further relatives, then back again to USA.
On a another trip USA to Mexico then back across the border to USA.

How long since though this was something I picked up on the other forum I mentioned that is related to the recent changes with the visas and passports etc. I mean I could be wrong but I felt sure that I had read that you couldn't do this now. Oh well I hope I am wrong then it will be a lot easier for bruciesbabe.

No that wasn't it. It is something to do with leaving the US and then coming back into it and it was on the other forum I mentioned. (although the US Embassy site should have details too)
back2basics 09-03-2005, 17:25 Ok well presumably you will need to rent a car.
Check out www.rentawreck.com/. You can rent all sorts of cars and drop them off in just about any state, so you don't need to go back to where you started. They are pretty cheap and they do have some speciality cars.
Route 66 is well worth the drive. There are lots of good web sites baout what you can do and see on the route.
Make sure you come to Chicago, it's a great city.
Be a little carefull in the small towns there are some weirdos.
If you have difficulty in finding a travelling partner then going on a few different treks with Trek America www.trekamerica.co.uk may be the solution. I went on their Southwest Trail trek last summer and had a great time. They do tours all over the US, Canada and Mexico so there's bound to be a few that will take your interest. You also get the added bonus of having like minded travelling companions along for the ride, and the tours, although they have a set itinerary, are quite flexible depending on the interests of the group. Check out their website though to get a better idea of what it's all about.
I agree with the others on the camp option, i did it a couple of years ago and had a great time and did a lot of travelling afterwards.
I'm really tempted to offer my services as a travelling companion, if only there was some way of getting 3 months of work!!
I think this may be something i'll be pondering for a few days.

In 1993 I did the 'Alcan' - the Alaska Highway.
Started in Vancouver, where I picked up a hire car, then drove up to Prudhoe Bay in Alaska. Then back down to Whitehorse in the Yukon where I dropped the car off, then to Juneau in Alaska by bus and flew back from Seattle.
I entered and left Alaska on a UK passport and a visa waiver, but I assume things have changed since then.
I organised the whole trip myself over the phone, and stayed in a mixture of hotels, motels, tents and slept in the car.
It was a great trip - I'd do it again at the drop of a hat.

BruciesBabe 09-03-2005, 19:14 Thanks for all the advice guys.
I have been to the states before - Boston, Orlando, San Fran, Vegas, Death Valley, Grand Canyon, Yosemite and Indianapolis and these trips have made me fall in love with the place even more I think!
I need to do lots more thinking and investigating re. this.
As for the time off work - I work full time, but thought about taking a sabatical type thing?
DaBouncer 09-03-2005, 19:25 If I was single mate I would go with you without a second thought.
I love the states and would love nothing more than to live there. However being married and my wife preferring to live closer to her mum, I'm afraid it's a no go for me too :(
Have a great trip when you finally get going :D
I'm off to the states in 7 weeks myself anyway for a 3 week fly drive hoiliday - yee haw!
Thinking about it if you decided that you either wanted to go for a shorter time (i.e. an acceptable period of leave from work, not sure what this is where i work i'd have to find out) or you wanted a companion for a section of your travels then i might be up for it. I had thought about doing something like this earlier in the year, but the usual excuses got in the way. Anyway if this sounds in any way workable for you then let me know.
FYI. i am also female and 27.

I've had many visitors from UK and Im about 300 miles from Canada. My visitors have never had a problem going between the two countries, I don't even think you need a visa. I don't need one to visit the UK why should you to visit us.
