View Full Version : Grass verges on east bank road
incognito 08-03-2005, 22:05 has anyone else seen the state of the grass verges on east bank road? through inconsiderate parking (and I know they need to be near the houses they are upgrading, but they are bloomin inconsiderate - they obstruct the paths and the roads!) by the council house upgrade companies, the verges are now reduced to being muddy bogs - I wonder if the council will fine the companies for this mess like they threatened sheffield's tenants and residents for churning up grass verges last year?
anyone else have any thoughts?
sue :)
They can't threaten the residents then turn a blind eye to others causing the same damage
I hope the contract includes a 'making good' clause :suspect:
Funny you should mention grass verges, the one along my parents house has been ruined by the next door neighbours family parking on it in wet conditions, but oh no not his lovely patch of green..
The other day myself and my dad decided enough is enough, not proud of what I did nor do I think it was clever, infact it was childish, but revenge was sweet for the 13 years of misery I had next door to him when I lived there..
Not such a green shade of grass has he got now
And what did it spell, Dee? :hihi:

Nothing, took me hours to clean the car though :hihi: and my wheels!!
Ah, 'taste of their own medecine'?
367squadron 08-03-2005, 22:37 Never mind the grass verges! The cars parked on that road create such a hazard. They force other motorists to veer into the other side of the road and especially on the corner where you can't see very far anyway.
I hate to see the grass verges messed up. With all the regeneration of my estate and the tractors and dozens and dozens of builders' cars i wonder if the verges and paths will ever be the same again!:(
redrobbo 09-03-2005, 23:13 The Arbourthorne council houses were built within a 4 year period 60 years ago. This was before the car was in common ownership. The grass verges on East Bank Road were badly churned and rutted before the housing contractors arrived on site.
After the houses have been improved (new kitchen, double glazing, central heating and an upstairs toilet - yes, I did mean an upstairs toilet), work will commence on environmental improvements. Wherever possible, this will include providing a hardstanding on front gardens to get cars parking off the road (see Lichford Road, where work has now commenced).
East Bank Road verges will probably have a 'grasscrete' treatment. This is segmented concrete, through which grass grows. It gives a green appearance, but allows cars to be parked on it without causing ruts. Most other streets will have grass verges reinstated.
It will take until 2010 to complete the decent homes and environmental improvements on the Arbourthorne. When completed, it is likely that a bye-law will be sought to ban parking on the grass verges (at risk of a hefty fine).
I'm proud of Arbourthorne. Parts may look like a bombsite right now - but just wait until all the work is finished. The estate will look fantastic. It's all part of the council's 'closing the gap' strategy. Government Housing Minister, Keith Hill MP, visited Arbourthorne a fortnight ago, to see for himself how the estate is being transformed. He was mightily impressed.
LoopyLou 10-03-2005, 08:10 It warms my heart to hear someone so proud of where they live. Well done and well said.

.....until the yobs trash it. Pity they cant make over some of the tennants!
Our part of Arbourthorne road just had speed humps put in, and the 51 buses churned up our verges - which i have to say thanks to my neighbour had been looking neat and tidy - because they couldnt be bothered to wait the 60 seconds it took the speedhump blokes to shift their lorry.
The hardstanding they want to put in - I was under the impression from the surveyor who did our house that it was only in the 'testing the water' stage, ie finding out who would take up the offer of having it done (me! me!) - are they def going to do them now? excellent.
:D :D :D
ps, they may be putting in an upstairs loo, but the downstairs one has to stay put! we asked for ours to be taken out and were told that regulations dictated they couldnt! whats that all about?
Hardstandings and other "environmental" works as part of this project will be done subject to funding, which I am under the impression is coming from a different pot to the Decent Homes cash.
In regards to the toilet downstairs not being taken out... all works done as part of this project are to a specification laid out by Sheffield Homes, and the contractors involved have no say in this whatsoever. Another example of this is appliances being moved around during kitchen remods whether you like it or not, and is mainly done for health and safety reasons e.g. moving gas hobs from beneath opening windows etc.
