didn't there used to be a running club at hillsborough leisure centre? i'm sure there used to be, but when i rang them they had never heard of it.

i'm looking for a running club for beginners (who are fairly unfit) somewhere not too far from crookes.

thanks

I think you might find a running club at Hillsborough Arena, which is based at the middlewood road end of Hillsborough park. They have a sports stadium and often have a group of runners training in Hillsborough park.

Steel City striders are a very friendly running club. They have around two hundred members and run from different venues around the city on different nights. Wednesday night 7pm prompt runs from Pinegrove Country club on Myres Grove Lane Stannington. Beautiful summer runs around Loxley, Stannington, Dungworth, Damflask etc. Winter runs nearly always on the roads around Rivelin, Crookes, Sandygate, Lodgemoor etc. Showers and a couple of well deserved pints afterwards. All ablilities catered for. Give it a try.

thanks blue11265. do they take slower, rather unfit people? i ask because i am overweight and quite slow. I used to run 800m and was quite good until about the age of 20 then i moved down south and became a couch potato/ at work all the time.

i haven't really trained seriously for 10 years! although i do go through periods where i get to the gym regularly. i would like to get back to the feeling i used to get after an early morning run.

my initial goal is to lose the extra 3 stone i am carrying and improve my cardiovascular fittnes.

one of my main concerns is that i run on grass as much as possible at first as my weight causes problems for my feet.

Apart from the wednesday night run there are a few people that run on a tuesday and friday from Pinegrove 7.40 pm. These are not Striders runs and are shorter runs than the wednesday one. The runs are usually about 40 mins duration. if you can build up a little stamina by running alone for a couple of weeks, usually increasing your distance a little at a time. Dont worry about speed that will come in time. When you start to improve (which you will do on each run) and can jog for half an hour or so at a gentle rate (walking where necessary) come down to the Pinegrove and join in . You will improve steadily and the runners never leave anyone behind. The front runners usually run ahead for a short distance and then run back to the last runners. That way everyone benefits. Give it a go.

Hi!

I have only started to run 'properly' in the last few months, and really would like to join a running club so I can train with other people of a similar level to myself as I improve.

However, i'm not sure where in sheffield clubs are and which ones are more beginner friendly and have a larger female membership.

I live the city end of penistone road, so any clubs that train out near hillsborough or nearish the center would be good.

Any information of vies from anyone would be greatfully received!

Cheers

Hi HollyR...

Although we are not too near Hillsboro..we are situated at the Tinsley South Tram stop...so getting here would be pretty easy via the tram..we are called The Source (fitness suite)....
we have an affiliated running club and our members ability vary.
Our coaches have many years of training under their belts and we like to think we are a freindly lot.
Most of our members have come from no running all at to currently running 10km races (some slow and some not so slow)and some have also opted to run the Sheffield Half Marathon.
I would like to invite you down to The Source (opposite Debenhams, other side of ring Road).

We run on Tuesdays and Thursday nights at 18:00 hours and cater for ALL abilities with a variety of paces and distance....no one is left alone..although the club is mostly ladies at the moment we do have one or two gentlemen.

If you pop in to Reception and ask to speak to Andy I will give you a guided tour and tell you more about what we do...
Hope we can be of assistance

Thanks for that sinstructor. I wil try and pop down soon and have a look. Next tuesday will be the first opportunity i'll get as long as i can get away from work in time!

Is nice to hear that there is a bias towards women there - unusual and kind of less intimidating!

Do you have to be a member of the source to join in btw?

Thanks

Hi, does anyone know of any running clubs around the Handsworth area? or does anyone want a running buddie? I have just taken up running again after a long break and am quite unfit so taking it slow. But am fed up running just at certain times, i.e. daylight etc, maybe if i could join a club or find a running buddie in my area times could be more flexible. Any ideas anyone?

Any Sheffielders out there done the Humber Bridge Half Marathon? If so, was it any good?

I did my first half marathon last year (the Sheffield one, naturally) but because it's on an earlier date this year I won't be able to make it. The Humber Bridge one is on 27th June, does anyone know of any other local races (any size) in July and August?

RichK
23-03-2004, 13:11
The only event in July/August that is reasonably close is:

Newark Half Marathon 8 August

There is a thread about it here (http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/forum/forummessages.asp?dt=4&UTN=33125&srchdte=0&last=1&V=6&SP=328311336406364203236) .

Just realised you aren't just interested in Half Marathons. I don't have any details on the following but I'm sure Google will throw up something.

How about the Lyke Wake Race in North Yorkshire, 10 July - 42 miles ( :D ) - fastest time so far is 6hrs!!! The start is staggered to allow the walk/joggers to start first. :loopy:

Also, Peak Forst Fell Race (6.5 miles) July 11 at Buxton

Thorpe Edge 10K Bradford, July 11

Holme Moss Fell (16 miles) Holmfirth July 25

Norland Moor (7 miles) Halifax August 29

Lickszz
23-03-2004, 15:45
I've done the Newark half before and it's a nice not too difficult run. The only issue I had was the poor security of personal belonging while the race was on.

I've also ran the Nottingham full marathon and if I remember right that used to be around those dates but could have changed since then. The Eyam half is an extremely testing run but some glorious views - this is run in May/June (I think)

The best I can suggest is to browse a running magazine and note the calendar of up and coming races.

Hello Jayne

I am secretary of Steel City Striders Running Club.
We are mostly road based, but do compete in the South Yorks cross country league. There is a speed training session at Woodbourn Track, but we do not compete as a club on the track.
We have a thriving social side.
Please ring me if you want more details of our training sessions
Eg. when, where and distance run.

We're spoilt for choice in this area of Sheffield. One run I enjoyed a few years ago was to run to the Rising Sun at Thornhill, that is, on the main road to Castleton beyond Hathersage.

I ran up to the roundhouse at Ringinlow, from Hallam (via Fulwood Lane, fantastic views over and way beyond Sheffield) and up Ringinglow Road to Burbage. Stunning scenery. Then it's a breeze because it's all downhill from there. Drop into Hathersage and straight through to the Rising Sun. Get your wife/husband/partner to meet you at the pub.

Do this is Spring and you'll realise just how good life can feel! An easier run (for me at least) is up to Redmires Dams and back, and if you grown tired then there's the Three Merry Lads and Sportsman!!

Enjoy your running!

hi,

i've recently started running. I'm slowly building up to 30min non-stop jog.
Does anyone know any good jogging routes around broomhill fulwood area that are:
a. flat
b. reasonable pavement surface
c. suitable for using when dark
d. fairly quiet - my current level of unfitness is embarrassing

Any suggestions gratefully received,

thanks

My best suggestion would be Western Park or Crookes Valley park (or a combination of the 2).

I wouldn't recommend them in the dark though.

You can't really run in Sheffield without having to run up some hills. When I did a lot of running I made sure each run had a few hills in it. You'll burn more calories off quicker and a hill helps you prepare your runs. Also, should you wish to run in the half-marathon, then if you've got a few hills under your belt you'll be better prepared than those that haven't!

Thus, I suggest you run through Broomhill and up Manchester Road to Crosspool. Seriously, it'll be hard work for the first five or six times but you've got to prepare your mind for when you've reached Crosspool. Then where do you want to go. Half an hour should allow you to run a minimum of three miles, so I'd suggest you turn into Crosspool itself and onto Watt Lane. Then comes the easy bit of dropping back down onto Fulwood Road, either down Darwin Lane or via Gladstone Road.

Then it's back along Fulwood Road to wherever you started. It's tough, it's about 2 and a half miles and will take you 30 minutes if you're not used to hills. It's also relatively well lit.

Yes, I know you asked for somewhere flat, but believe me, overcoming hills is one of the best things about running! It's pyschological.

If you feel this is too much, then simply run along Fulwood Road to the Bull's Head in Ranmoor, and turn around and run back!

When I was training for the Sheffield half-marathon in 1987 a lot of what I've written was my main training circuit. I managed to run from Slayleigh Lane to Broomhill (9mins), up Manchester Road, Crosspool to Plough Inn (18 mins), Redmires Road to Blackbrook Road (roughly 30 minutes), down into Fulwood Village (40 minutes) and back to where I lived (4 mins). That was 6 miles in 44 mins. I did this run twice, sometimes thrice a week (along with other runs, including a ten miler).

Finally, you've called yourself 2fat2run. Cobblers to that. Get out, get fit enjoy. Don't let anybody put you off - you're doing it, they're not! Good luck.

The best place to run in Sheffield (if you honestly think your to fat to run) is in a gym on a tread mill.

That way you can choose the level you want to run at, and it is light when its dark out side and its a pretty safe enviroment.(unless you over do it)

I suggest you use a treadmill untill you gain stanima, also there are lots of other ways to get fit in a gym.

Saifa
06-02-2005, 19:16
Gotta agree with Jon on this one.

Always makes me laugh seein joggers running past lines of gridlocked sheffield traffic. Not only are those pavements doin your knees but you get massive lungfuls of exhaust fumes an all.

Gym it every time- though the countryside aint a bad alternative if it isnt raining.

this isn't too hilly. starting at goodwin. run down to uni, past hicks to hanover way, down to waitrose, along eccy road, down rustlings road (by the side of the park (or through the park when it gets lighter) turn left at the mini roundabout to hangingwater lane crossroads, right at the lights up to fulwood rd (the hill - not too long though) back along fulwood road.

this is basically what I do - though I start in crookes and finish going up conduit road. it's not my preferred route but that involves hills and countryside and isn't great in the evening.

one good thing with this route is it's fairly flat but you can turn back early or find hills if that's what you want - it's also on fairly big well lit roads.

when it gets lighter I would suggest starting at hunters bar and running through the parks for 15/20 mins then turning round and running back. it looks flat but is actually v gradually uphill - doesn't feel too bad but would get you fitter.

if you want to get better at hills without incorporating them into a run find one near you, run up it for 30 secs jog back down, do 10 times (say) once a week. it'd make a difference.

have fun

Jayne

I recently ran the Sheffield Half Marathon in a time which I was fairly happy with for my first Half Marathon.

My aim is to continue training and try and run three or four 10ks between now and this time next year, with the intention of improving my 10k and Half Marathon times.

I thought a good way to do this would be to join a running club.

Does anyone belong to a good running club in the Sheffield Area? If so -

Where do you meet?
When do you meet
What is the cost of membership/ per session?
Any other useful information would also be appreciated!

Cheers,

Mike.

Mike79, I'd be interested to know how you get along.

When I did the half-marathon for the first time (in 1987, aged 18) I too considered the benefits of joining a running club. Alas, silly me didn't bother, instead joining the YMCA gym a year later, a decision I regret in that instead of going running I went to the gym instead!

Although I ran the half again in 1997, what with other commitments (marriage and kids to name but two) I've not been into running since. Until a week back. I'm now attempting to get back into it, hopefully in order to have a third attempt at the half, next year.

Whilst I do have a training schedule to be getting on with, I wonder whether I ought to join some form of club.

Should you do so, could you be so kind as to let us know how you are progressing?

Many thanks.

Go to Sheffield Athletics Club

www.sheffieldathletics.co.uk (http://www.sheffieldathletics.co.uk)

According to their website they welcome runners of all ages and levels and you'll have access to the best sporting facilities in Sheffield.

The reason why I know this is because I'm considering joining myself, if only in part, to become part of an official club (and thus hopefully save on some registration fees when I get round to running some 10ks and 1/2 marathons - ie, 'attached' as opposed to 'unattached').

Now, on Friday 17th June, I am proud to admit I've run 100 miles since May 1st. I've lost weight and feel great. I'm presently running 3 miles, 6 days a week, and that is going to become 4 miles, 6 days a week very soon.

They have an extensive index of all forthcoming races.

For my first competitive run in 8 years, I'm doing a 5k in York in August (Millennium Bridge 5 - it's flat!).

I can't work out how to post a message, so I'm using the reply option. Anyway, I ran my first marathon on sunday (robin hood) in a reasonable (I reckon) 4 hours 21 minutes. However, I paced myself badly and know that I could improve so now I'm completely hooked. My friend laughed hysterically when I suggested doing another marathon so I thought I may join a running club. I live on the west side of the cty and often go running off road in the peaks, although I'd like to do more road running/long distance. I'd struggle a bit with tme commitments as I have small children. Can anyone suggest a running club in Sheffield? Thanks.

Hi again mozgoz

Short notice this, but you would be welcome to run with Steel City Striders tonight, Wednesday 19th from the Graves Tennis Centre at Norton in Sheffield.
There is a group who run approx 8 - 9 mls in approx 75 -80 mins.
We don't run continuous, but stop at intervals to pick up those at the back who may be struggling ( usually me, being the oldest ) neither do we ever leave anyone behind. Ladies please take note as the darker evenings approach.
There are changing and shower facilities at Graves Tennis Centre. Locker is 20p, shower is a £1.
We start prompt at 7-00 pm, definetly not 7-01 pm !
Try to be there ready to run at 6-55, for a quick chat prior to the run commencing.
A small group also go for a pint afterwards, just a pint, no more.
No pain, no gain, give it a go ! Better than sat in the chair supping tea and watching the tele.
We have been running from there for 24 years, all weathers.

Anyone else welcome also. Would be more than pleased to see you

There are also 2 / 3 ladies who run very steady, say 6 mls in just over an hour.
You are welcome to run with them.

Thankyou for the invitation, but unfortunately I can't often do short notice due to family commitments. Have a good run, hope the rain holds off!

For those runners that live in Dore, there is a new yoga class taking place from the 7th of November at the Arc (part of the Church Hall on Townhead Road).

Its aim is to help with extra stretching so great for runners!

Class starts at 19:30 and ends at 21:00.

Contact me for more details.

are there any running clubs that cater for older slightly overweight blokes like me im 46 stopped smoking and piled on the pounds

Hi stew46

You will find that Running Clubs in general tend to look after new runners who are at least capable of running at the same speed of some of their exisiting slowest members.
Looking after beginners is a problem in so much as you need the infrastructure within the club to look after and bring on these people.
Am I making sense here ?
i.e. if you were to come training with Steel City Striders, for instance on a Wednesday evening at Graves Tennis Centre in Sheffield. We sometmes have a small group, who usually run around 6 - 7 miles in around 65 -75 mins, which is a very steady pace. Could you keep up with them or are you prepared to do some work on your own first of all to enable you to cover such a distance in that time. Unfortunately we don't cater for beginners, who I would class as someone who can only run very short distances before stopping and who after a short period of running is completely out of breath.
Don't despair, you can start running and improve at any age, but a bit of hard work and discipline is required which anybody is capable of.

Hello again stew46

Just a thought. You will hopefully also receive a reply from Nick Duggan who is heavily involved with Sheffield Running Club. Nick will pass on some good advice and also info relative to his club.

I will pm you with my home phone no. I will leave it up to you whether or not you want to ring and have a chat about how to proceed further.

Any other runners out there wanting to join a running club, then lets be hearing from you !

Agree with Runningman, but we all need to start somewhere. Last night we had 40 runners out divided into 4 groups all running at a different pace, from Don valley.
Advice to beginers try a short run from home, rest a couple of days and then try and run a bit further, try and target running for 20 minutes. When you can do this come down to Don Valley and you can do a few miles with the beginers group and then build it up . Different clubs have different nights and locations so you can find one to suit you. We, Sheffield Running Club go out Tuesday, Thursday 9 both from Don Valley 6pm and on Sundays.

With darker nights and worse weather its much easier to run with others if you want to train for the Sheffield Half Marathon of the Great Yorkshire Run, now is a good time to start.

Hi Runningman/Nick

I have completed a couple of 10ks this year and have now done 4 half marathons since June of this year. I am stuck for time because I work until 5pm in town so the 6pm starts from Don Valley/Woodburn Road are difficult to get to on time.on a Tuesday. Is it possible to arrive a bit after 6pm. What's it like at Graves on a Wednesday. I usually run by myself but it would be nice to have some company and to be a bit competitive. Then one day maybe I can tackle a full marathon. I am in the Meersbrook area. Would be good to know some like minded people.

Regards. Bikergirl

Hi everyone!

I'm new to this forum lark so keeping my fingers crossed that this message goes where it's supposed to!

I've started running this year and have so far done a race for life (5km) and did the Jaegermeister 10km at Nottingham Uni last friday. I did the 10k in 63mins which i think puts me at 9 point something km/hr and am hoping to build on that for the Great Yorkshire Run in September. I'm thinking of joining a running club to keep me motivated over the winter so that I can have a bash at the Sheffield half marathon next year - any suggestions about which would be the best suited club for me? I don't mind being pushed a bit but I don't want to be the slowest in the group when I run even if the group wouldn't leave me behind!

I'm based near Eccy Road but have transport so anywhere around Sheffield would work well. I've never been in a running club before so not sure how they work - would I be able to come along to a session before having to join? Do people chat as they run?! I'm a bit of a chatty runner. Also, if anyone in the area is at a similar level of ability and fancies a run, let me know!

Cheers,
Amanda

A couple of good sites for people interested in running.....

www.runnersworld.co.uk & www.fetcheveryone.com

Handworth Roadhogs are a good lot - met some of them at a couple of cross country events. I used to run with Steel City Striders and they were great.

Try www.fetcheveryone.com - you can search for your nearest club on there.

Hi

I am looking for a running club , ideally in the S6 area , but I do work in the city centre so somewhere I could get to by tram would also be an option.

I have started running again recently, and ran my first 10K recently at the Great Yorkshire run , and suprised myself by completing in 43 mins.

I would like to run more 10K's and some half marathons , and am looking for a club to motivate me to train better and push me , as running on my own I often stuggle to push myself.

Any advise would be welcome

Matt

you are welcome to join me and 40 others who train at Don Valley on Tuesdays and Thursdays . Four different groups. The aim is to enjoy running and run faster . Particularly in winter it is much easier running with other people . Just drop in 6pm ready to run any Tuesday ask for Dave, Steve , Adrian or Debbie . All welcome.

Dark Peak fell runners an alternative for those who like the Dark Side of running. Literally on their night runs in the peaks! DPFR.org.uk I think. Also do regular monday night runs from their clubhouse at the Sportsman pub in Lodgemore and interval training in Endcliff park.

Hi,

I live very close to Ringinglow Road and am looking for a running buddy (my partner doesn't run!). I am keen to run off-road (Burbage) at night as well as on-road. I am not that fit at the moment but have run lots in the past (marathon/OMM etc). I get home at around 6.30pm and would like to run from about 6.45 for 30-60 minutes (nearer 30 I suspect at the moment!) and possibly some weekends. I am 44, female and also climb and road bike. I'm hoping to find a pal of a similar standard so that we motivate and spur each other on. Am I asking too much? Let me know if you're interested!
