I've just bought some Debbie Bliss Alpaca Silk, 500g aran and 500g DK. Now i'm sure I remember a website where you can put in your yarns gauge, and it comes up with links to free patterns to fit that gauge?

Did I dream it?

Should I invent it?

Is it in your bookmarks?

I'd like to make something more substantial than gloves/socks, but looking at the debbie bliss pattern book, you need 38+ balls for the more ample sizes.

(edited to say I am Pixiepear NOT RobD1 who is my husband and cannot knit, but sneakily logged in when I wasn't looking to go on the allotment forum! So confusing)

Is this it?

By the way, I just made the Rowan Gemma Beret with the DB Alpaca Silk (aran). It looks lovely but it is WAY too big...as in looks like a comedy prop...something went wrong and I will have to redo it with smaller needles..and I am usually a tight knitter! But it is really beautiful yarn, so soft and snuggly. It really doesn't go far, the needles just ate it, I used 3 balls for a hat, but obviously the tension was wrong so maybe that's my fault. I too looked at jumper patterns for it first but don't think I could carry that amount of wool home!

Thanks Pixie, but no, I don't think that was it. Maybe it was all just a dream...lol.

Allotments, ooh would you be allowed to keep sheep, or alpaca?? that would be fab!

I do have one ball of the alpaca silk aran weight and it's so soft, but your right I don't think it's going to go very far.

It's definitely not a dream, but I can't remember the name for it either.

There's one on the Garnstudio site (http://www.garnstudio.com/lang/en/kategori_oversikt.php)but (of course) it only works with their patterns. You can put the tension in the search box on the left and it will show you all the patterns, or you can put the tension and "Sweater" say.

That's the only one I've ever come across.

Well, it has been known for chickens to be kept on site...sadly nothing bigger. BUT there is an alpaca farm in Sheffield, and if you could entice one over to the fence and had a pair of pocket shears, who knows, you could get enough for a sock! :D

Could you be thinking of the Haiku cardigan (I think) where you input various numbers like tension and you can knit the garment in anything

hmmm no, none of those ring any bells, I know you can search Knitty by gauge, but I don't think that was it either.

Oh well, thanks for trying :)

Just browsing Knitty and came accross this page and remembered your question:

http://www.knitty.com/search.html

Is this what you were after?

I've just found it on raverly whilst playing. When on the pattern page, under the search box, click the link to the 'experimental pattern search' Then on this page, you can see a box saying needle/gauge. If you click on this, you can put it in as either a 4 inch or 10cm square.
