HotPhil 08-03-2005, 08:26 If you're looking for an external one, you could try to have a look around for an external USB2 or firewire caddy that you can insert any IDE drive in. You've then got flexibility as you can choose a drive that suits your budget and you can upgrade it later if you wish. A friend of mine always used to say £100 was what you spent on a drive, the price per Gb seems to have dropped now and the best value seems to be a bit lower - around £75 last time I checked. I'd go with £75 on an OEM drive (tbh they're all much of a muchness now from manufacturer to manufacturer) and spend the rest on an external caddy. Western Digital were doing some good 7200RPM drives with an 8Mb cache a while back. I wouldn't go with less than 7200RPM and look for big caches. Do quick calculations on £/Gb - 250Gb may sound good, but do you really need it now, and is it good value? 21steve 08-03-2005, 11:36 i got a caddy from ebuyer. only wanted a data store that i accessed rarely, got a couple with 120gb hdd's in. the caddy was £18, nothing special but its USB2 so 400mb/s and does the job for me. i had the hdd already so it was the best option for me Skatiechik 08-03-2005, 12:20 Originally posted by coopster1974 Looking for a new hard drive and I'm starting to side witha Maxtor - have seen a 250gb for around the £100 mark. Had two maxtor drives dies in the past 3 months, both less than 6months old. steev 08-03-2005, 12:27 Originally posted by Skatiechik Had two maxtor drives dies in the past 3 months, both less than 6months old. Likewise, have since switched to Seagate, their USB drives are nicer looking than Maxtors for same price too... **edit - good timing by tomshardware, this just in... http://www.tomshardware.com/storage/20050308/index.html alchresearch 08-03-2005, 19:43 I've been using Maxtor's for years - my first 10Gb one is still going strong and in daily use. I've bought a couple of drive caddies from Ebay but the prices of ready-made units are now so low it's not always cost effective to build your own. Some prices here (http://www.microdirect.co.uk/productlister.aspx?GroupID=219) . Aldi occasionally do an external drive, not sure when it's in next. The good factor is that it is a three year warranty but the bad point is that it's an unknown brand. D2J 08-03-2005, 20:24 I bought a FreeCom external HDD from Dabs about 8 months back... 120gb for £75ish, never had a problem. Not a fan of Maxtors etc... Happy hunting :) lonesome 08-03-2005, 21:06 Theres some good prices from here: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=UFNQcm9kdWN0U2VhcmNoUmVzdWx0cw%3 D%3D&order_col=sell_price&order=ASC&subcat_uid=128 Plus they're based in Sheffield! Can't get much better than that! Regards, Grant |
