View Full Version : Red light in the window! Hmmm...

I drove through quite a respectable part of the city this evening, and noticed a house with the curtains open and a red light shining quite visibly through the window.

We're all familiar with the term 'red light area', and my understanding is that this term originated from the number of red lights in the windows of brothels in the less salubrious areas!

Does a red light in a room still have the same meaning today? Do you guys reckon that this was probably a brothel, or some poor householder doesn't know the significance of such a statement?

Well - there's a mystery then. Wasn't there a swinging sign, like the pubs and B&Bs have?

Could be that the bargain buy of replaement gas/elecric fire warm glow effect has outliived the appliance and is now being used because the occpant wants to maximise his investment. There again its probably a student man thinking it will get his lady in the mood to appreciate his fry up and cheap white wine

What's a proper opinion, K?

My opinion is that it's probably got a reasonable explanation ( And I don't say that very often :D )

Why didn't you knock and ask? :suspect: :hihi:

Don, I think you're fab, but to mention this very bad joke on an open forum is just not nice! Unless you volunteer to send it to everyone via e-mail! :D Go on everyone, I dare you! Ask Don_Kiddick what it was about! :D :D :D

If the occupants were from another culture, maybe they aren't aware of the significance of red lights? Does it have the same meaning if you're from India or Hong Kong etc?

Maybe we should all go and park up and have a look then report our findings/thoughts at a later date.

Don_Kiddick - what were you on about?

Maybe they like the colour red?

We have 1 orange bulb in a lamp which gets used daily.

Also a UV strip light in the music room.

Opinion? who cares!!!

Oh Dear,
I must live in a BROTHEL, there is red all over my house, lamps, bulbs, curtains, carpets, wallpaper, pictures, I wonder why? Is it because I LIKE RED? sounds like you have an obsession with red lamp shops!!!, wake up!!! you are living in the past!!!

Call me naive, but I didn't even realise where the term 'red light district' came from.

Surely if this were true, the police would soon be onto them?

Halevan, I can't believe that you have blurted out my secret on here. I guess it is about time my fellow forummers knew though...

Not only am I obsessed by red-lamp shops, I have recently been spending my spare time in developing a time travelling machine! Consequently, whenever I feel the need, I am now able to transport myself to 1850's London, and trawl the streets of the city in a handsome cab, desperately seeking out red lamp shops. (red-lamp shops were quite commonplace in the mid 19th century!)

When I discover one, I peruse the wares of the shopkeeper, and make small talk with the assistants (on the subject of red-lamps only of course!) I haven't been able to make a purchase yet though as they won't accept Visa or new money

Halevan, once more you have hit the nail on the head; I am red-lamp shop obsessed, and I am living (at tleast partly) in the past. How very perceptive you are!
