View Full Version : What is your religion?

I've created a poll to see if there is an intresting balance of religions represented across the forum.

It doesn't matter whether you 'practise' it or not, but the religion that was given to you by birth, parentage, proper conversion, etc.

Well, born C of E, but converted to Taoism... but no option for that, so other. :)

Hmmm, "Jedi" not listed...........

There's no option for 'none'...

I don't practice and I wasn't given a religion by birth either. Have never attended a religious service, except for enforced school assembly's (Had to have a bible and hymn book)

I celebrate Christmas, but I know people of all religions who do (I have a buddhist friend who cooks turkey and potatoes in a wok).

So do I count as 'other'? I wouldn't say I do really.

I was brought up Roman Catholic but believe that all religions are just Man's attempt to explain something which doesn't quite fit in the human brain and that as such they are all just culturally appropriate ways of trying to describe the same thing.

I would call that something along the lines of pantheism? Any other ideas??

Lickszz, I know you've asked people to comment about what religion they may have been born into but I don't feel able to force myself to reply like that!

I'd like the 'none' option like beckyaa. I was born into a very church of england family but certainly dont believe in it now or practice at all. Well - except for enjoying time off work over easter and christmas. I'm don't believe in or follow anything..well, except for my own morals..

The Force is strong. I too have a high Medichlorian count.

Did anyone else get that email that said put Jedi on the census and, if enough people doit it's got to be recognised as official??

A N D did you do it?

(should this be a new thread??)

I find it amusing that this is the poll I've seen with the highest number of options, but the majority of folk have chosen 'other'! It goes to show what a multicultural and multifaith system we live in!

I'm Wiccan...I hug trees and cavort with the Druids!

I wasn't brought up as anything particularly.

There's elements of Christian/Islamic teaching that I have a lot of time for (contrary to popular belief these are very similar religions in their basis if not in the way they are practised), and I think the Buddhist way of looking at the world is probably about the closest humans have come to a deeper understanding through religion.

I wasnt given a religion, was never baptised, and never seen the need for one. When half the worlds religions are trying to wipe out the other half then I think I will remain neutral.
Instead of preparing for a happy and glorious afterlife we should concentrate on getting this one right. As the man said "This is not a rehearsal".

[Cavorting with Druids sounds interesting, are any of them girls?]

As for the Druids, my fiancee was a girl the last time I checked!

In reply to Carmine, I class Marvel Comics and the Bible on the same level.

Cannot believe in church stuff.
Too much of a coincidence that Jesus was born on Christmas day.

I was brought up as a Quaker, and I'm still a member, although I haven't attended for decades. Just can't seem to cut the ties completely.

It's not bad as religion goes: democratic, no dogma or elitist priesthood, an emphasis on social justice, equality and peace. No complicated theology, just the idea that everyone has the potential for good and it's everyone's responsibility to help them maximise that potential.

Just a tad worthy though, sometimes...

I believe in and admire the work that Jesus did, and I attend an Anglican church on Sundays. However, I am very liberal, and most of what is in the bible I view as tosh. Anything that wasn't done or said by Jesus I disregard. I voted CofE BTW.

Yeah where's the Jedi catagory. I put that in my last census, the same as about 30,000 other people and it is now classed as a religion[or at least a sect] with more members than some on your list.

And back to christians, What about Methodists, [my birth religion] even the president of the USA is one of them. I'm sure that a cosiderable proportion of Christians in the UK are Methodists. And they are not Catholic or C of E. I see that you have an other protestants, but wouldn't surprise me if there are more than Catholics in Sheffield

Christened as a baby, now a firm non-believer. You could call me a devout atheist or maybe a Darwinist.

Interesting choice of options, but like Cols I always refer to myself as a devout atheist/Darwinist (though my parents were educated as Quakers and I went to a C of E school).

Actually, I'm more of a Hofstadterist than anything.

I never understood why people did that, apart from the high geek factor, what was achieved by it ?

I am agnostic so I ticked other. But i don't define it as "a person who believes that nothing is known or can be known of the existence or nature of God." But more i'm open minded and that at the moment I don't know whether a God exists or not, but I don't rule out the possibility of one day knowing for certain.

Post needs

Atheist/None

and

Agnostic

my coursework at the mo is an investigation into religious practices in the middle classes - does New Age religion affect the overall spirituality of the nation? etc. Anyone living in the Meersbrook area who's interested could contact me if they want to take part in a short interview, or any attendees of Fulwood Church.

Thanks!!

Am I being too pedantic to suggest that CofE, Catholic, Quakers etc are not religions, but denominations of the the Christian religion?
I go to a CofE church that is ultra-liberal. Not interested in the dogma but how local people can make a positive impact in their community.
Sorry if that sounds pompous!

Agnostic - there's something up there but I wouldn't presume to be able to understand it. If anything I'm a taoist - I believe in balance and reflection.

Good for you! I've always been looking for 'the answer' and became interested in the Hare Krsna movement in the early nineties. However, I fell out with that as abstaining from sex was simply a step too far for me. I did manage to go veggie for a whole year and admit the religion itself, with strong connections to Hinduism is beautiful.

Around three Christmases ago I was watching a programme on the Nativity and decided to start reading the Bible. I found it challenging and interesting and so bought myself a New Believers Bible and tucked into that. I became fascinated and so decided to go to my local church - St Luke's - and although I felt umcomfortable and not sure whether I should be there, I've been going on and off since.

I've now read certain books of the Bible four and five times and become familiar with them and the whole Bible then starts to take on a whole new meaning. It becomes personal and I found myself turning to it in times of need or when I wanted inspiration or guidance.

I'm not one to advocate to anybody what religion they should adhere to, despite the instruction to 'go out and tell the world about the Gospel'.

It's personal and Christianity has now become a part of me. Jesus didn't come to call the well, but the sick and I consider myself in the latter group.

And whilst many people claim it's religion that starts wars I disagree. It is MAN who starts wars. God gave man a choice. If we didn't have choice we'd probably not have a reason!

I put jedi on my census form. A few thousand people did but the email saying that if so many people put it it would become an official religion was rubbish, apparently. Just did it for a laugh really, not even a massive star wars fan.
