You missed out the one I'd vote for:
Trust No One!

mine isn't there either - The only person you can depend upon is yourself!

I'm a bit confused (doesn't take much) by 'to forgive is harder than to forget'... Apart from the fact that I think it is harder forget than forgive... if you had forgotten, then there is no reason to forgive, because you can't remember what it is you are supposed to forgive anyway....

Most of them have been relevant at different times to me I think - difficult to decide on one.

So..at the moment...I've gone for 'make your own luck' - I don't actually believe in luck but I'm reading that to mean I'm the one that's responsible for my own life, the choices I make etc (and not other people) and should try to make the most of it.

When the chips are down the only one you can depend on is yourself. Any help is a bonus.
We come into the world alone and we gp out of it alone.

Also you make your own luck.

I voted for "The only person you can depend upon is yourself".

My recent important life lessons:

Do NOT look out of the window.

Primal fear is way more intense than you may at first anticipate.

Make sure you are wearing gloves as you exit the aeroplane.

Fear is your friend.

Ahhh, but for most people 'love conquers all' is a passing feeling... If you're dead inside its a feeling that can last forever!

Snookums, that's such a sad way to spend your life though. What happened to the phrase "It's better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all"?

How about "owner of a lonely heart, much better than the owner of a broken heart".

Nah, actually I'm not really that cynical.

The 'smile' one is my choice. I think most of them apply to us all at some stage and that a lot depends on age or what we deem important in our lives. Now I'm getting on a bit I've mellowed and feel an inner calm ................I know, don't say it.

LOL - glad to see my life philosophy is so popular!

I came slowly to the conclusion that the only person you can depend upon in this life is yourself, over years of being a single parent with little or no help from anyone.

Friends come and go, some people will help at some times, others at others, and whilst sometimes a bit of a helping hand is very welcome, it isnt crucial to my survival.

Maybe I am too independent, maybe a little cynical but I get along by counting on ME. And I have always been there for me whenever I have been needed! Can't say that about anyone else!

:P Well I don't know about that.

I'm a big fan of Occam's razor too....
(lifted from http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/physics/General/occam.html)

Occam's razor is often cited in stronger forms than Occam intended, as in the following statements. . .

"If you have two theories which both explain the observed facts then you should use the simplest until more evidence comes along"

"The simplest explanation for some phenomenon is more likely to be accurate than more complicated explanations."

"If you have two equally likely solutions to a problem, pick the simplest."

"The explanation requiring the fewest assumptions is most likely to be correct."

. . .or in the only form that takes its own advice. . .

"Keep things simple!"

Well thats cheered me up no end

Mine are this ;
Be nice to people on the way up, you might have to meet them on they way down again.

Don't depend on other people ,it hurts too much when they let you down.

From every mistake you make in life,a lesson can be learnt.

We all need somebody.

Make the most of what youv'e got cause nothing lasts forever.

And finally .LIVE BY THE SWORD, DIE BY THE SWORD .

Hmm, or alternatively to quote HL Mencken:

"For every complex problem, there is a solution that is simple, neat, and wrong."

Then I hope one day that this is what you do mean!

I wasn't excluding it either - just explaining that I meant it in a broader sense.

This sums up what I meant :

The definition of love in Buddhism is: wanting others to be happy.
This love is unconditional and it requires a lot of courage and acceptance (including self-acceptance).

I believe the only person you can depend upon is yourself is true.. but with it being such a popular option, perhaps us dependable people should get together and be dependable for one another?!

none of the above.

If life teaches me lessons, what are they for - the afterlife?

I liked Bansky for this much quoted pithy proverb

"Only when the last tree has been felled and the last river has been drained, will man realise that reciting red indian proverbs makes him sound like a ******* muppet"

Or the one true truism of our times

"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro". - HST

I voted for 'you make your own luck', as it is perfectly true.

Achievement in life is a hard slog.

'He who sits waiting for a lucky break to arrive will turn to stone in his chair.'

Sam Miguel, 2005.

Not surprisingly, the majority of you are voting for the one where the only person you can depend on is yourself.

This of course is rubbish: we all let ourselves down from time to time.

You only live once.

If I could go back in time, I would shout this at myself until I was hoarse. I have wasted so much time - worrying and being upset over ridiculous things, giving myself no peace, not allowing myself to just enjoy my life.

What for? To be afraid of life is to diminish yourself, and also those around you and those you care about. You are not being the person you were meant to be, not living the life you were born to live.

Life is short and time goes by much more quickly than you think it will when you're a teenager or in your early twenties - reach out and grab your chances as they come by - they may not come again. Make POSITIVE choices with happiness in mind, don't allow fear and negativity to rule your decisions.

I've learnt that life is for living - Embrace Your Life - it's the only one you've got (as far as we know!)

StarSparkle :)

I always used to be very pesimisstic about life and especially love, and my very firm motto was

Never trust anyone you will only get hurt.

Very very fortunately someone managed to slip by my non trusting radar and I fell madly in love with the most wonderful man, against my then better judgement.

I now know more than anything else that trusting and loving him is the most important thing in the world.

Yes people can hurt you and it may turn out that I get hurt from this but I would rather have just one day of this total trust and a thousand years of pain than never to have experienced it at all.
