the kashmir (spital hill) has recently introduced a few south indian starters on their menu - which are fab.

the bloke who runs the place is, i think, up for diversifying into a few south indian meals - we keep nagging him about it every time we go - he is, i think, uncertain as to the potential popularity of them - go down and mention it!

i LOVE south indian food, and it'd be great to have somewhere in sheffield that serves it

:)

I am talking about more about

Starters : ulunthu Vadai, parupu vadai, mutton roll, vaipon, bonda, ......
Main : idili, dosai, idyapam, putu, kotthu rotti, kudal curry (lamb intestine curry a rare curry, not everyone knows how to make it) . roti, egg roti, briyani,
Desert ; appam, musket and other things which i dont remember

Well my mum used to cook them when i was in london and there was plenty of restaurants, but obviously most of the dishes are very complicated and would take me ages to do it, still i wouldnt make it like my mum would make it.

I went there last night with high hopes, but i was very disapointed. The idlis were really bad and they seem liked they were frozen cos it wasnt fresh at all.
Never going back again. I could just get better idili frozen from shops

The problem is there aren't really many South Indians in Sheffield, most of the Indian restaurants are Pakistani or Bangladeshi run. There's not many genuine Indians in Sheffield. Maybe Mrs Nirmal is Indian, but I don't know of any other Indian run restaurant.

I don't think there are many Indians in Sheffield, I don't know of any Hindu temple.

It would be wonderful if there was a South Indian food outlet in Sheffield.

the food will be south indian and north srilankan food, there is no difference because, in south of india there are tamil people and in the north of sri lanka there are tamils as well. But both of cuisine are the same. This cuisine is common to all the tamil peoples but i dont have a clue about the south srilankan food, most of the pi eople there are singhalese.

I was passing and picked up a takeaway menu. It's more of a snack bar than a restaurant only having one table and weirdly it doubles as a fish and chip shop with heated glass paneled counter and deep fryer.

Bizarre!

The menu looks like genuine south Indian food with Idli, Dosa etc and the prices look dirt cheap. They also do mushy peas and gravy so you could have you Masala Vadai with a dollop of peas and smothered in gravy for that true multicultural experience.

Yeah, vegetarian food is good - dosa, puri, idli. The vada wasnt cooked well and chicken curry was soaked in elaichi. But again the dosa was different on two different occasions, guess they will need a while for the taste to be consistant, maybe they have too many cooks. In any case, if you go between 5pm to 8pm, be prepared to wait for an hour minimum.

Would anyone like to recommend what I should be having from there?
What are the quintessential South Indian dishes, as I've not had it before?

I'm omnivorous, meat is good, vegetarian fine as long as it's the main point and not a substitute (i.e falafels).

Much appreciated.

Me and my family are thrilled to bits this take away's been opened. My dad is south Indian (from Kerala to be precise) and my mum, despite being Indian too, isn't really a big fan of the typical curry house restaurant/meals. We've always been big on veg Indian food (south Indian, Punjabi and Gujarati), so it was virtually impossible to come by any actual restaurants in the area (though my parents promised they'd get back into cooking the stuff themselves at home lol!). Closest thing was going to Leicester.

Apparently one of the ladies who runs East & West handed my parents a flyer about the place a couple of weeks ago--and we have never looked back!! Got my fill of idli, sambhar and coconut chutney which are excellent. Also tried out the Sri Lankan mutton roll dish which is great too (couple of mates from uni are Tamil and tried them out when over at their flats). Will have to try out the dosa too.

Also, anyone remember Singapore Dosa (think that was its name), which was on Abbeydale Road as well? Opened around summer of 2004 but was short lived because the owners had visa problems, from what I heard. That said, I got the feeling the potential of south Indian cuisine in Sheffield was immense as the place was filled to the brim gradually. Demand was up and they had to often accommodate people outside...

I was really thrilled to taste the the best ever dosa that I have got in this country. Other items like chicken curry and Kothu Roti are out of this world. It is neat place and it has already made a mark in Sheffield.

I had a masala dosa and hubby had mutton rolls and chicken rice. Very impressed. Prices were very good and they do 25% student discount.

They are doing lunch boxes too, 2 chappatis, rice and curry for £3.50 (I think) both veg and meat.

I think they should forget the fish & chip side of the business though.

Definitely will be going back there soon!

Had the hyderbadi biryani on Saturday. Fantastic. O/H had masala dhosa and we shared a portion of something (the name escapes me!). It was a lentil patty which was quite spicy but very tasty. All this and a few drinks for £13. Will be going again very soon!

EDIT: It was the masala vadai we had as a side. Would order those again - very tasty!

Well, he would, wouldn't he?! I haven't been there myself but if what he means by 'authentic' is 'Indian food cooked properly by Indians' then I can name at least 10 restaurants in Sheffield that fit the bill off the top of my head!

Heathen!

Of course, it won't be to everyone's taste. Some of the spices used are not the usual ones found in UK 'curries' - the one that looks like a nutmeg and is tremendously sour seems to feature heavily, not to mention the chillis... I have tried many things on the menu and not all were ones that I would go for again - iddiyappam springs to mind. On the other had, masala dosa, cauliflower 65, mutton kotthu, channa kaddala were fantastic!

I see that the menu has recently expanded and features a few more westernised dishes - chicken korma for pity's sake - so I hope that they are not pandering to parochial Sheffielders and losing all the flavour.

Abbeydale Rd, East meets West. Small place basic table and chairs so not really restaurant, doesn't sell alcohol.....but very authentic. There are loads of places like this in Sri Lanka Columbo.

Currys are nothing like Indian ones so don't expect loads of meat. Very hot. I was in Sri Lanka a couple of years ago so nice to find it in Sheffield. Its the only one I know of. They also do take away food. Not too expensive, give it a go.

You can buy packets of '65' spice mix. Coat your veggies or meat with a bit of yoghurt and spice, marinate, then deep fry. Don't overdo the spicing, though. I nearly wiped out the family by going a little overboard. Not sure where you can get it from in the UK - we received a couple of kgs from a friend returning from Pondicherry!

As an alternative, try this recipe (http://www.spice-india.com/2009/03/cauliflower-65-deep-fried-cauliflower.html). Looks pretty good to me.

Im sure its to everyones taste when the fish you get from this place is hard ( im talking like a way overdone peice of tuna ( although was an asian fish) in a stone cold curry. A load of old bones in some well over done stoggy basmati rice.

The only thing which was half decent was the chicken but again was only luke warm. And again half decent was been kind to the bloody thing.
We only live 5 min drive from the place!!

Sounds pretty poor, Rodge. Did you complain?

Many people use their hand to eat there, perhaps explaining why the food is not piping hot. Bones in both meat and fish are to be expected as well as it's just the way things are done. They should be able to cook a mean bit of basmati, though - the biriyanis have been fine there when I have visited.

Another thumbs up for East and West. It's on what used to be my way home from work, so I hold the place responsible for some of my recent weight gain.

I dropped in yesterday, and although it shows signs of getting trendy due to a recent refurbishment (the very thought of which sends a chill down my very untrendy, very uncool spine) the food was as excellent as ever.

I had the biriyani, as usual. It was delicious, as usual. Prices are relatively low - I must admit I was a little bit miffed when a few months ago, everything on the menu was increased by a pound or so. But looking at it with fresh eyes, and taking into account the quality of the food, it actually is still rather cheap.

Sticking with water to drink, my meal cost £5.50, and there were easily two portions in there. There are cheaper options as well - I think the dosa ( a thin crispy pancake filled wth onions and potatoes, and accompanied by a selection of dips) is one of them.
