In the news today (Mon Mar 7) a big cat has been spotted in Donny, anyone know of similar sightings in Sheffield?

If there ever was one in Sheffield, it would be full of air rifle pellets by now.:(

It must be the great-great-great (repeat 20 times) grand kit of my Auntie Ethel's "Dinky".

Dinky - never was a cat more badly named - it was a big black monster. It used to "own" the chair by the fire - if anybody tried to shift it they got slashed by its tiger like claws.

It used to venture out occasionally to decimate the local sparrow / mouse / dog population or scrap with other toms if a female was in season.

Here's a link;

There appear to be quite a few big cat sighting websites - loads of pictures of footprints, scratches in trees, slashed sheep - but no photographic evidence of big cats.

ooh, feral cats, it's not as exciting as a puma on the loose is it? But it reminded me of a time when as a young boy, there were lots of wild cats living in and around the scrub/ bushes on the Park Square roundabout. Anyone remember that? I think the council had to cull them.

Has Yorkshire got/had many flamboyant gentry types that may have kept such 'exotic' pets as I remember hearing about some craze a while back.

There was also a recent case of some guy in a New York apartment who had a pet tiger.

I think I did in 1991. I'd been to the cinema with a mate & we decided to walk back from Crystal Peaks 'cos we'd missed the last bus & neither of us had enough to cover the taxi fair.

It was near Aston, it ran accross the road about 200 yds in front of us.
Much Too big to be a domestic cat, too cat-like to be a dog.

Still puzzled to this day

Sheffield should invest in some big cats-lions and tigers and the like, and release them every night around the Manor and Pitsmoor areas. Just a thought.

There was a sighting of one in Treeton Woods/Hail Mary HIll Septembertime last year.
Local resident walking his dog in the woods, just after dawn, saw a black feline - about the size of a large dog.

He didn't want to publicise it at the time - it would have just brought the shooters out.

How about we put them in Don Valley Stadium? Then we round up all the chavs and scum due in court for drugs, joyriding and such and bus them straight in and have a Gladiator style arena? I'd happily pay to see this - the stadium gets some revenue, the lions get fed and we rid the city of some filth at the same time!

Old thread I know, but a groundsman at a certain gold club in Dronfield has recently reported seeing (his description) an ocelot prowling around....
Obviously his story raised a few eyebrows, ('cos it's not the 'usual' puma, black panther or whatever) but he followed up by commenting that it was "a lot bigger" than a lynx, so he obviously has done his research...
When queried (and lambasted to boot) he commented that a few local farmers with land stretching across to Apperknowle and beyond had also spotted something strange lately....
So, there you go....

According to the British Big Cats Society website;

"The Eurasian lynx is the largest, with males averaging 21 kg and the females averaging 18 kg. The Iberian lynx is intermediate, with males weighing on average 12 kg and females slightly smaller and the Canadian cat is the smallest, with males averaging 10 kg and females averaging 8.5 kg. Height at the shoulder is between 65 and 75 cm."

From the BBC website - regarding the Ocelot.

"Statistics
Body length: 70-100cm, Tail length: 27-45cm, Shoulder height: 40-50cm, Weight: male: 10-11.5kg, female: 8.8-9.4kg."

If he thinks an Ocelot is a lot bigger than a lynx it would appear that his research wasn't that extensive.................
