Hi
Would anyone know what the rules are comcerning having a gas appliance fitted in a council flat?
It's about a bayonet fitting for a gas cooker.
I gather that it's the tenants responsibility (which I find incredible!). But it's not clear - other than it must be done by a Corgi reg fitter - what the 'requirements' are.
I've been told by one fitter that it must have a certificate. Another said that, and building 'control' (???) must be notified.
One asked if it had some new device required by law (not sure what that was?), which it didn't apparently.
I've got prices ranging from £45 up to £95+.
And my heads spinning. All I want is my cooker fitting!!!!
Any advice?

It will definitely need to be done by a CORGI reg fitter, and it needs to be certificated.
If you are in a council property, your home should be checked yearly, for Gas safety, and you should recieve a fresh certificate, every year, after the gas Safety Check, from the people who do the check saying what appliances (fire, cooker, boiler etc) have passed the test, or which, if any have failed..

Assuming free standing cooker.
Strictly speaking; if the female of the bayonet is already on the supply pipe work anyone can do it, it's a little bit like changing a light bulb.
DON'T CHANCE IT THOUGH. GET SOMEONE IN WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND CAN TEST FOR LEAKS. Complete-Heating, and JL Heating to mention but 2.
Um...
I don't think cookers are alowed to "free stand" - in that there must also be a safety chain fitted to the wall

Squiggs is quite right. Safety chain should be fiited.

Thanks all, but it was also the 'safety certificate' that was puzzling me. When I spoke to the council about who could do it (them or me) they never mentioned anything about a safety certificate.
There's also nothing but a capped off pipe coming up from the floor.

it does not make any difference the fact it is a council property.
you are a tenant and as so you can fit what ever you want as you are liable for it .
all you need is a corgi engineer to fit the cooker.
as long as it is fitted to manufacturers instructions it is deemed safe ..
as for a certificate any new gas appliance should be notified to show it has been fitted correctly, this should be a certificate from building standards.(a cost of 2.50 online registration.)
if its a new cooker it will need a cooker hose (£11.00) and maybe a baynet connection (usually already fitted)
depending on the type of cooker usually a chain or stabilization bracket fitted to the floor or skirting.
including a gas test and visual to the rest of the property it would take no more than 45 min to fit. more if the gas pipe has to be moved or repositioned.
if someone told me 95 pound for an hrs work i would politely say no thanks and phone someone else.
hope this helps .. :)

I agree with John.
As a tenant you have responsibility for correctly installing the cooker, and thats best done by a CORGI. This applies when the gas appliance -cooker - belongs to you and not the landlord
As its a new cooker you will receive a 'certificate' via corgi. Safety certificate is given to landlords on an annual basis and is required by law.
At the moment your gas supply has been capped off. So all you need is a bayonet connection and maybe a new cooker hose. Cost wise i'd say £45-55

I had my kitchen appliances fitted by this company : Internetkitchenappliances.co.uk/sheffield
They put me on to some fitters who work for them and it was only £35 for the gas hob..
