Where's the best place to buy mice from? I've had a dig around and have two spare cages, and anyone who knows me knows I don't like to see a cage go to waste!!:hihi:

Been thinking about getting mice for a while now, so even though they are one of the few small furries I've never kept, I think i am well prepared for some new additions! I have plans for the other cage too-new Hammy, glutton for punishment or what??!:D

Thanks.

My daughter has a female mouse called Rose she is lovely we bought her from Middletons at the bottom of the Moor. Make sure your cage can be filled with sawdust as ours really spends most of her time digging little tunnels from one side to the other. She is amazing to watch she has them all interconnecting so she just pops up near her food bowl or water:hihi:

you should have specified pet mice LM - this question has been asked before, but for feeding snakes!

oh, and toilet roll middles make great tunnels for them. ours loved burrying them under the sawdust and tunneling in them, and chewing them to bits too!

Can mice get as tame as hamsters?

ours were very tame, used to sit watching TV with them on my lap, curled up in my jumper.

Please be very careful when buying from pet shops. You can always ask the pet shop where they source their animals from but I have chosen to actually go to a ratty breeder as opposed to a pet shop because of this:

http://www.brecklagh.com/petshops.html

Some pet shops don't source their livestock from these places and instead take litters from the Joe Public who have had accidental litters but if you intend to go to a pet shop be careful that it's not one who uses farms like the one in the link.

Thanks everyone!

Strix, the thought actually crossed my mind that people might think I had a snake or two and wanted mice to fill their little bellies:(:hihi:

Lotti, I am always careful when it comes to petshops, they aren't always my favourite places:roll: Maybe I should've asked about mice breeders rather then a general question. I doubt you'd see many mice in rescue would you? Tend to just get ignored for the short duration of their life if the owners decide they don't want them, a bit like hammies. That link actually sickened me, but thanks, people need to know don't they?

Peaches it's just a normal three-tied cage, how far apart were the bars on the cages your mice escaped from? I don't think it'd be a good plan to let them escape in my house, what with April and Ginger on the prowl:hihi:

And Innocence, isn't it difficult to look at an empty cage? I adopted a russian dwarf hammy yesterday who can no loner live with her sister. She is absolutely gorgeous, and now there is one less empty cage in my house:banana::banana:

Hi,

Try here for rescue mices: http://syac.homeip.net/cgi-bin/makepage.py?menu=homecode.dat&targetpage=animals//Mouse/1.dat

(I know this because my friend has small furries, nothing to do with my snakes!)

The RSPCA is frequently overflowing with rescue mice :(

Also a quick google of rescue mice will bring up plenty of hits
including this place which looks informative:

And Cavy Rescue - although I guess that may be a bit far unless transport can be arranged.

I found this article really interesting, I always wondered how they stocked up pet shops. It was pretty upsetting though, and I understand now the importance of trying to avoid places such as pets at home. In fairness I do try to pick the ugliest hamster when I go, they tend to be the friendliest anyway ;)

Glad you found the article interesting... quite an eye opener - I thought.

Yes indeed, makes me want to do something about it but other than not buying from these pet shops I cant see that there is a lot really. Sadly I can't see them going out of business either as I imagine a lot of people go to big stores purely out of convenience, many people probably don't put a lot of thought into getting pets such as small rodents. I have never bought a hamster from a chain store before, however my friend has and his hamster was a lot less tame and difficult to deal with than any of mine, who seem to want to just sit in my hands all day long!

This is it, people think that going to a breeder or rescue for a rodent which will live 2 -4 years is OTT. What they don't think about is that there are lots in rescue and if you want a pet that is going to be easy to handle, you want one that's used to being handled.

To my mind, even if a pet shop gets their rodents from good breeders, they stil won't have time to handle them all for an hour a day!

I don't think it's OTT*, I just didn't realise that rescues would have many mice in, tend to think that people get small furries and then just inore them for the short duration of their life. :(

My new hammy is a rescue though:D And she is amazingly friendly, I was so surprised!

*I know you weren't aiming you post at me btw:hihi::)

Oh and hels1977, thanks for the link, had a quick look and it looks very useful! I am off to pick April up from the vets shortly, but when I get back I shall have a proper gander:thumbsup:

When buying hamsters in the past I have never expected them to be completely tame at first these things do take time, however I must say my friends pets at home hamster has had a lot of attention and still acts rather wildly.

I have just emailed RSPCA chesterfield to see if they have any hamsters - I dont really need one however I do have a spare cage which noone seems to want to buy.....

My mice were always trying to escape from the cage - they are very good at squeezing through tiny gaps.

*brings thread back up*
Does anyone know whether any local animal shelters have any female mice in? So far I have only seen males :( and I can't deal with male mice *doesn't mean to sound mean*
