lesley1985 07-03-2005, 14:55 i would just like to know whether creatine is bad for you?
apparently we already have a lot of creatine in our bodies, but i've been told by a few people that its bad for you and by others that its really good for you to take. :S
LoopyLou 07-03-2005, 14:57 I am sure creating is very good for you. art is a true way to live free.....

p.s. welcome to the forum, I;m sure some other more intelligent person on here will be a lot more helpful.....
(* * hangs head in shame for being too sarcastic with a newbie........ * *)
Anyone taking bets on how long before this one gets moevd to the general area?
I've never heard of Creatine either...we sure are failing this newbie, aren't we!?!
Is creatine what bodybuilders take to increase muscle mass, if it is I think it just causes you to retain water.
I could be thinking of the wrong thing here.
lesley1985 07-03-2005, 15:03 hehe, its not me who's wanting to take it, its my boyfriend who takes it, he's a fireman and he insists that he needs it purely for strength, but i get the feelin it has more or less the same effects as steroids but i might be wrong.
thats why i came to ask hehe

lesley1985 07-03-2005, 15:05 yeah i think it is to increase muscle, thats why i'm thinking its not so good for you, i think it should be done naturally.
he took it for about 2 weeks once and by the end of them two weeks his tops were all too tight for him round his shoulder blades and stuff, and to put on that much muscle in such a short time, i think has gotta be quite dangerous

cgksheff 07-03-2005, 15:06 Creatine is one of the naturally occurring, amino acid compounds in our body involved in the release of energy to make muscles work.
It is also better known as the proprietry name of a Body Building Supplement.
quite a few years ago my hubby was into weight training, i decided to give it a go and we got tub of creatine from the herbal shop, you had to mix a few scoops into orange juice and take it before you started training.
well after about a week i did infact notice a difference in the amount i could lift but unfortunatly did myself a mischeif and pulled a muscle ( so end of for me) BUT my nails were really strong and healthy.
hope this helps

Creatine in a protein which you can find in any red meat (steaks, burgers etc).
It's very helpful for building muscles but it has to be combined with hard training (gym - free weights etc).
Creatine supplements just give you extra creatine i.e. 1pill=5 burgers (just an example not real values)
Any kind of such diet supplements are not generally healthy as they are bad for your kidneys. Body builders have kidney problems when they reach a certain age because of continuous usage of such supplements.
In my opinion, it might be harmless to use a high quality supplements product once or two in your lifetime, just to try its effect, but in general such supplements should be avoided.
A healthy diet, full of natural creatin is as effective... just eat steaks, burgers regularly (burgers can be high in fat though...)
Eating loads of steak sounds more enjoyable too.

I would say that the quoted forum is too body-building orientated and opinions are biased. Medical doctors have different opinion about how healthy creatine supplements are
lesley1985 07-03-2005, 15:24 lol, i'll have to get him told tonight then, that he won't be takin no more of that...
don't want him dyin on me, he already does lots of vigourous exercise with his job, and on top of that he's at the gym about 4 times a week.
But he does'nt know the meanin of eating healthy, he hates all fruits and vegetables, i try to prize him by sayin, eat all your sprouts and you'll get a desert (no prizes for guessin what that is) lol, but he does like his meat so i'll have to tell him to bin the creatine and get eatin some burgers

http://www.thefactsaboutfitness.com/research/creatinesafety.htm
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3145223.stm
Its available for sale over the counter, so i guess there are no proven detrimental side effects.
Hope this helps,
basshedz
lesley1985 07-03-2005, 15:32 yeah you can buy it over the counter in places like holland and barrats and asda, so it can't be anything too bad but a couple of people have mentioned that its not too good for you, and i don't know much about it so i havn't really got a leg to stand on when i'm tryin to dis courage my boyfriend of taking it
I took Creatine about a year ago for a couple of months. I did bulk up quite a lot and could lift lots more weight. The main side effects were my muscles would sometimes tighten or spasm. More annoyingly however, I was constantly going for a wee, no sooner had one finished i needed another. :D

Erm... Benson and Hedges are available for sale over the counter...:suspect:
Most important things is - don't let him take it forever and a day.
Creatine -
1) naturally occuring in the body
2) supplement creatine makes your muscles retain water
3) you can then lift heavier weights
4) because you can lift heavier weights your muscles grow more
(not directly because of the creatine)
5) then you STOP
Creatine is supposed to be used in 'phases'. Take it for a cycle of a few months - then take SEVERAL MONTHS OFF. If he follows the instructions he shouldn't do himself any harm. So don't worry too much.

apparently we already have a lot of creatine in our bodies, but i've been told by a few people that its bad for you and by others that its really good for you to take. :S
There's also CREATININE, which is a by product of metabolism & IS bad for you if you have renal impairment & don't excrete it properly.
Thje detailed summary of a lagre number of studies can be found here:
http://www.abcbodybuilding.com/CreatineMeta-analysis.php
As stated there is no reason to be concerned about taking creatine - use it properly and remember that it doesn't just magically give you muscles, resistance training on a regular basis gives you muscles, creatine is more of a training aid.
(please don't eat burgers instead instead of creatine - that is nonsense - stick to lean meats, fish and egg whites! - take creatine if you want to enhance your regular training.)
Why are you taking/thinking about taking it?
It is produced naturally by the body to help the muscles performance during exercise.
Creatine is used by body builders/athletes who have intensive training regimes and it increases their body mass (muscle not fat), and their strength and stamina. So your in for a weight gain if you are going to be taking doses!
But apparently there are no side effects and you can get the Creatine from all those health shops around town.
lesley1985 08-03-2005, 12:34 no i'm not thinking about taking it.
My boyfriend is currently taking it, he's been taking it for a while now, but i stopped him from takin in for a bit, but he strated taking it again behind my back anyways.
He's a fireman and does lots of exercise and insists that it cant do you no harm but im in two minds.

Ermmmm. Well as people on here have said and the research has shown there are not any proven side effects yet unless anyone has taken it themselves and have had some that I have missed! Its just some athletes/mainly men have this burning desire to take it to end up looking like a gladiator!!!
From what I have heard, its like an easy way out...so you want all these muscles, this is the answer to speed up the process with minimum hard work!
Creatine is fine, taken in the doses suggested. You have to have a month off it every so often, but I certainly recommend it.
I'd advise taking whey protein during the day, a mix of creatine and some carb powder just before and during training.. Then a mixture of card powder and whey protein about 30 minutes after. You can't overwork a muscle, so taking the protein helps recover it faster.

lesley1985 11-03-2005, 09:34 yeah thats what moxy said but i didnt believe him...cheers gaz
lesley1985 11-03-2005, 17:30 what you mean you thought so??
creatine is FINE!!! and SAFE!!!
its the most used suppliment in the world for not just body builders but atheletes as well..
its main function isnt to build muscle really...well it is but.... it doesnt build muscle...it makes you recover faster so you can train harder so muscle will grow better. you can get de-hydrated and maybe more hungry but there are NO side effects its PERFECTLY LEGAL and consult any doctor you want we all have creatine in our body...your just upping the amount so muscle growth can increase more.
ive been taking it for about a month and its helping me train better.
and you dont take it in cycle and stop....because you have to sustain a certain amount of creatine in your body to keep your training going..lots even recommended a `loading' period where you take a lot in the first week (i did this) and if you stop for over a week then you will have to load up again! which is annoying.

hahaha... well you have to train VERY hard to get muscle to grow...this doesnt make your training any easier! if this is easy? then dont show me hard because i nearly collapse after a session at the gym!
ukstudent 17-03-2005, 17:48 Hi, can someone help me with info on these. My friend is interested in taking Creatine but then would he need protein shakes too. Can someone help with the differences and anything else. Thanks
