Hi all,

I'm a songwriter who sings a little looking to be the frontman of a new band. I'm not looking for a certain style, and if you will only do one i.e classical rock, covers, indie then I suggest you don't read on. What I am looking for are people who are open minded and are willing to try something a bit different. I don't particularly like modern music, I hate the arctic monkeys, oasis, those types. I want a fresh approach, something that will stand out, something that know one has the balls in doing these days. I want to create great songs and not just songs for gigs (if you get what I mean). If you interested in starting a band with a difference then replay.

Hi,
are you dead set on the frontman side? Because I'm looking for a songwriter and guitarist and like what you've got to say. (I'm totally nonplussed by the majority of modern music). I'm a singer and lyrcist.
Claire.

No I'm not dead set on it. It's just I've got plenty of songs and ideas I would like to share. I'm quite happy writing songs; It's my hobby :hihi:

What sort of bands/influences do you have? What would you want to do in a band (other than what you've said above)? And is writing songs your hobby, or being a frontman?

Well I like Billy Idol, Adam and the Ants, Echo and the Bunnymen, Dire Straits, The Only Ones, Van Morrison, Roxy Music to name a few. I don't play any instruments, I've just been writing songs for 6 years now and have been wanting to do this for along time just had a few other commitments. I was in a band years ago where I was writing with the guitarist but nothing panned out. My hobby, well what I do is write songs, I can't help it as I am always thinking of songs in my head so that is why I've got to make them (it drives me crazy).

What are the songs like? Roughly. The feel of them. If you don't play any instruments how do you get the songs down? How would that work out int a band situation (would you be behind the scenes, learn an instrument, mime along with one?) I don't want to be rude but how old are you? And feel free to ask questions back I feel like I'm interregating you.

I think of them in my head. I don't need an instrument to write a song. The songs vary, I wouldn't like to label them as a certain style, I just know what instruments I want for them. I know it sounds vague, it's just, I don't like labeling things, I just do it and let others make there own mind up. If I'm not the frontman I'll work behind the scenes; I won't mime to anything. I'm 21.

Well if I was to ask anything, what are you out to achieve?

To achieve? Well I want to start a band, write songs, preform them and work like hell to get them heard and to make it work. I want to create a band that really means something, that can stand on its own accomplishments outside of trends, and hopeful a band that will really matter in some peoples lives. (even if most people don't get it). I know where I want it to go lyrical, and a rough idea presentation/attitude wise, and some ideas about what to put into songs despite the fact I can't come up with them myself out of scratch. And I want it to sound like itself, like it couldn't be created by anyone else. If you know what I mean - some bands, some songs, anyone of a hundred people could have made it, its got no true personality. Does that sound like what you'd want to do?

Oh, come on you lads. You're being way too coy! You've got to start naming names, not who you hate, but who you love. So who DO you love?

We all want to make something that 'matters' but we have to be a lot more organised and precise. Songwriting and music are not mystical happenings that can't be pinned down. They are described with terms, labels, and thousands of years of study and analysis. All for the simple reason of communication.

Step out of the darkness my friends.

Yeah I understand exactly what you mean, It does sound like what I want to do. I may be able to help you with those songs if you like?

Too cerebral. You need a relationship or to go see these people -http://www.infadels.co.uk/index.htm

I'm confused. If the stuff is 'in your head' how does someone else access it? Do you have a usb port behind your left ear?

Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys didn't play an instrument, and yet managed not only to conceive of most of the band's material, but also to communicate it to the band (by singling instrumental parts into a tape recorder). Unconventional, yes, but not impossible and in this case a highly successful way of doing things.

Ay up. I'm a drummer with interest in what you're going for.

Drums and vocals... bit of an empty match at the moment. Could be better with a guitarist and bassist!

Well I want a drummer, but at the moment I have no guitarist, therefore no songs, so I'm not really sure what to say. What's you'r drumming like? What kind of bands are you into?

Claire.

Hey, I've been reading this with interest :)

I'm a 22 year old guitarist, recently started songwriting as well and have a few works in progress that I'm pleased with.

Influences and fave bands include GnR, Motley Crue, AC/DC, most 80s and classic rock. I like songs I can dance (in the loosest sens of the word) and sing along to, and I like songs I can actually remember after I've left a gig - more than I can say for a lot of modern ****.

Let me know what you think guys!

Janine

To anyone who was interested, I'm now in a band (via this forum!) We're called Henrys Carpet Skip and are playing West Street Live's tribute to UK number 1's show on May 4th if anyone fancies coming along. Should be a good night, we've got some right cracking songs lined up for it.
