The Thing From Another World. 4/10. Dated. Badly. Also has a nasty message that the scientists are always wrong and the military policy of shoot on sight is the right way to go.

1408. 5/10. Brilliant 1st half hour (the sparring between Jackson and Cusack is terrific) gives way to a CGI/Special Effects action-fest. Cusack is one of the most interesting actors in Hollywood but he can't do anything to save this.

Knocked Up. 7/10. Half an hour too long and only intermittently funny (usually when Paul Rudd is on screen). But its got a heart of gold and the laughs are big when they do come. I have no idea why a smart and likeable actress such as Heigl has spent most of her career hidden away on tv.

The Orphanage - 9/10 A cracking good film with strong direction and a slow build-up. (quick note - if you prefer your scary flicks to have gore and blood, then this may not be the film for you. In addition it is subtitled - doesn't bother me personally as I prefer foreign films to be subbed, but thought I'd put a warning there for those who will inevitably watch 10 mins then walk out)

Beowulf - 5/10 and this was only because the 3D was interesting. Without it the film stank.

Jumper - 6/10 Director managed to achieve mediocre from what could have beena great film. Theres more than one book so why rush it. The fleshing out of characters was poor.

This is England - 8.5/10 Loved it. Gritty, hard, funny, sad. It has everything, and anyone growing up in the 70s and 80s will relate to it.

There Will Be Blood 8/10 (Day-Lewis was superb!)

The Bucket List 9/10 (Freeman/Nicholson a wonderful combination)....makes you want to make a list of your own....

Two years he walks the earth. No phone, no pool, no pets, no cigarettes. Ultimate freedom. An extremist. An aesthetic voyager whose home is the road. Escaped from Atlanta. Thou shalt not return, 'cause "the West is the best." And now after two rambling years comes the final and greatest adventure. The climactic battle to kill the false being within and victoriously conclude the spiritual pilgrimage. Ten days and nights of freight trains and hitchhiking bring him to the Great White North. No longer to be poisoned by civilization he flees, and walks alone upon the land to become lost in the wild.

Has stayed with me for weeks, life changing.

Painfully average and dull. Was like watching a made-for-tv film. I'm not entirely sure what accent Russell Crowe is supposed to have either...

Vantage Point - 4/10. A good concept let down by a terrible plot, and nonsensical timeframes (conversations/events which take 30 seconds in one telling can last long enough for a 5 minute event to take place in another)

That's a low scoring- I was going to watch that now don't know.

Despite really not wanting to like it (think i overdid my Glen Hansard phase during my college years!), I was surprised by how sweet this film was! Lol at your needing subtitles tho! :D

Sawdust & Tinsel. 8/10. Lost souls trying (and failing) to escape lives that they hate.

The Ice Storm. 10/10. Lost souls trying (and failing) to find some temorary escape from lives that they hate. Masterpiece.

30 Days of Night. 5/10. Despite good pedigree this is a mess. Its basically a siege movie but commits the cardinal sin of having no tension. Probably because the Vampires are more likeable than the humans.

Hot Rod. 7/10. Absurd humour abounds in a winning tale of a young man trying to raise money for an operation for his step dad.

An unashamedly chicky flick flick with a great scene involving Benny and the Jets. Both me and my mate sat there and sighed at that point- oh to meet a man like that! There is something about James Marsden when he smiles.

As a chick flick i'm giving it a 7 and a half. Definitely better than last CF I saw which was Definitely maybe.

The idea behind it is to illustrate that 'real life' isn't like that. Which is pretty patronising.

On a side note I think the director is terrific at building tension and fleshing out realistic characters, but he constantly destroys all his good work with heavy handed moralising. He just doesn't give the audience enough credit or respect.

I agree with most of what you said there but I don't feel he did a very good job of building up tension at all. We knew what was going to happen, I felt myself thinking 'just get on with it' which is something that should never really happen. Some of the scenes lasted a good 10 or 15 minutes with absolutley nothing happening. The film was also painfully predictable.

30 days of night - I was going to say "it's ok" but it's not, it's rubbish.
Blindingly obvious clues about what will happen later in the film "Grandma grows dope", perhaps she will have some UV lamps then, oh, she does, thats handy, "A huge mechanical grinding machine", perhaps someone will end-up in that, oh, they have.
And it has the usual lame ending that leaves it open to a sequal.
Only suprise, the hero dies.

Control - (Biopic of Ian Curtis the lead singer of Joy Division) - Only 4/10. Only for Joy Division fans in my opinion.

I'd disagree with that, I saw it knowing very little about Joy Division and thoroughly enjoyed the film. Also bought their Greatest Hits CD after watching the film!

Batman, the 1989 version starring Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Jack Nicholson as The Joker.

Still the second best Batman movie EVER after Batman Begins IMO. I only hope the late Heath Ledger is as good as The Joker in the new Batman movie as Jack Nicholson was 19 years ago.

Just seen "In Bruges" with Colin Farrell (dont let that put you off), Brendan Gleesen and Ralph Fienes.

It is excellent. Easily the best film i've seen this year.

Go and see it NOW !

Happy-go-lucky..............I was so looking forward to seeing this but didn't rate it at all :( The only redeeming thing about this film for me was the actor who played the driving instructor - he was fab.

I'd have to give it a 4/10.....I was actually bored watching it and that rarely ever happens to me with films :(

Saw 3: 1/10

Utterly pointless film. Still, I now know for sure never to bother watching any of the other 3 films so I guess it served a purpose.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall - 7/10 I know this film is in the IMDB top 250 but i just didn't think it was as good as Jason Segels (writer and actor) other film Knocked up. It is still a decent comedy but I could not put this in the top 250 films of all time.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - 8/10 - About one man's true account of what it feels like to experience the medical condition called locked-in syndrome. Someone in this condition can see and think, even remember everything but his body is paralyzed from top to bottom and he cannot move his mouth to speak. As depressing as this all sounds, it is nowhere near as intense as how it feels to see the film from the perspective of the patient, which is exactly where Schnabel places his viewer. Whatever you were escaping won't seem so important after having experienced this cinematic paralysis.

Really want to see this film. Sounded really good when it came out but didn't get a chance to go and see it!

Three- 9.5 out of 10.
The film got 1 but Kelly Brook in a bikini or less for 90 minutes gets 8.5.

Persepolis 8/10 - Wasn't too sure at first, but became absorbed by the story, and charmed by the simple (yet effective) animation. Tells quite a political history lesson in a simple way.

Stalker (Сталкер) 8.5/10 - Andrei Tarkovsky - "Tarkovsky actually manages to film images that we have never seen before: glowing fogbanks, dreams, unnatural sunlight. His use of an undefined deteriorating industrial landscape is delirious; his use of extremely slow and long camera movements creates a non-pulsed filmic time in which hallucinations, dreams, mystical visions can be inscribed into the diegetic space of the film, as integral to the film as any conscious subjective action/narrative, in much the same way Nicolas Roeg used the lush, drugged-out decor in Performance to display subjective, psychedelic mindsets. And the sleeping scene with the waterfall: nowhere have I seen images like that, they are simply riveting. Masterpiece"

If you are going to copy and paste from elsewhere you should really cite the source. Otherwise people may think that you wrote that yourself, which you wouldn't want....would you?

He did put the review in quotation marks, so it's fairly obvious he was quoting from elsewhere. The source should have been cited though, you're right.

The last film I saw was Tomb Raider II - the second part of the £5 box set (bargain!). 6/10, purely for a muscularly lovely Gerard Butler and Angelina Jolie in what looked like head to toe silver rubber. Good music and a couple of impressive set pieces, though the story was nothing spectacular, surprisingly enough.

Tomb raider films are pretty good. Great fpor just switching off to, and not having to think. Sometimes that's the perfect recipe to chill out to.

Oh, I agree entirely. I'm all for undemanding films when I want to settle back in the cinema or on the sofa for a few hours of chilling out. I certainly wasn't watching Tomb Raider II for plot, character progression and thematic development :hihi: .

Some check your brain in at the door films do it better than others though; the Tomb Raider films don't compare to, for example, the Terminator series (Edit: the last one was rubbish though), or even something like Scream, if you're after a popcorn-fest.
