Sheffield football legend Derek Dooley has died today. A legend for both Sheffield teams and unfortunate he has died when not too old. Surely a minutes silence will be held when both teams play the next derby. It would be a much more fitting tribute than each having their own silences.

At least before his death he got to know he had been recognised by been entered into the Sheffield Walk of Fame, http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=279483&highlight=derek+dooley

Perhaps naming a suite, bar or restaurant after him at both grounds.

There was no need to use the search facility it was breaking news and nobody had started the thread yet. It appeared me and owlsman both saw it on The Star website. We must have both been typing the thread and he must have posted before me.

This would be a good oppurtunity for an investor in Wednesday to become popular with the fans, by erecting a statue of Derek Dooley outside Hillsborough.

They name sections of highway over here for famous people.
Why not "The Derek Dooley Parkway" for instance ?

Sure have, lots of times.
The expressway was built adjacent to the old E.C. Row Rd which was named after a former mayor.
The Ojibway Parkway is a continuation of the xpressway and runs out past Ojibway Park which is a nature preserve. Sandwich Street was in the township of Sandwich which was annexed by Windsor but at one time was larger than Windsor (I think).
I think that a street or something similar is a good idea for Derek to be remembered.

If his family are reading this - your loss is everyones loss in Sheffield, such a giant of a man in every sense, and a total gent.

If ever there was a case for a statue or naming a road then this is the time.

Parkway = Derek Dooley way, why not? A permanent and main route straight into the heart of the city, just where he belongs.

I would like to pay tribute on this site to all Sheffielders, football fans or not, this chap will be sadly missed in all parts of this great footballing city. As a Wednesdayite from the early 80's, I never had the privelage of seeing him break the net, time after time in those great but brief years he had for us, my Grandad told me many a story of him and I do not belive there has a been a similar player like him (maybe Hirsty). It was a harsh end to his Hillsborough days the way he got sacked by SWFC on Christmas Eve 1973. He went onto great success with the commercial side at the Lane and then his great chairmanship. I have had the honour of meeting him in the last few years through work and he had so much warmth and was geniunely interested in who I was.
You will be missed Derek and next month's derby has to be the DOOLEY DERBY.

I have just finished reading his book this weekend past, its a great read and what impressed me most was the way he conducted himself. At all times this guy was a gentleman and had a fierce sense of what was right and wrong.
As a Burnley fan from outside of this great city but now living here it is with genuine sadness to hear of his passing, I only wish I could have met him.

In each era there are one or two people that are truly respected by all for their honorable ways and manner and Derek Dooley was such a person. I've had the honour of meeting him twice at the Lane and what a truly warm and charming personality the man had.

Someone posted earlier that he was a giant, he was a true sportsman and a gentleman. Someone like him is encountered very rarely these days and he will be very sadly missed by people in this City and elsewhere.

How sad that he should be snatched away too soon,. Sincere and heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

I agree that renaming The Parkway would be a fitting tribute to Derek, but how do we go about getting it done?

The sacking of Derek on Christmas eve was one of the few times in my life that I have been ashamed to be a Wednesdayite.

I was on holiday in Majorca and even out there all football supporters were saying how callous it was to sack him.

I was also at Deepdale when Dooley went back to Preston for the first time since the tragic day when he broke his leg and the warmth of feeling from all sides of the ground that day was amazing.

The Dooley Cup is a good idea and I also think the teams playing in special shirts for the Sheffield derby would be a good idea (as they did with the Manchester derby/Busby Babes). Releasing the shirts for general sale would be a nice touch aswell.

The best idea by far though is a statue at both football grounds or one in the middle of town. Maybe in the Peace Gardens?

Why is renaming of the Parkway the most ridiculous idea.?

I just think its a daft, pointless thing to do. Its tacky and it reeks of Americanism. I don't like it at all.

I think theres many things that would be a much better tribute to him.

No-one will ever, ever refer to it as the Derek Dooley Parkway anyway so what would be the point in changing it?

At least if you've got a statue its something that people will take notice of and can go and visit to pay their respects, and by releasing a commemorative shirt for United & Wednesday, people would buy it and treasure it. What if I wanted to pay my respects to him? I could hardly go onto the Parkway, stand in the middle of the road and lay some flowers down could I?

Ousetunes
06-03-2008, 10:11
Disagree WhiteHawk. Many cities honour their famous citizens by way of naming thoroughfares and other civil landmarks this way. The Parkway is a most bland title anyway, and the beauty of renaming it after the late great Derek Dooley is that it takes you - and visitors - into the heart of the city, a route that will be familiar with football fans visiting both grounds.

Both clubs would appreciate this and it would be a nice 'neutral' gesture. There's a bar at Hillsborough called Dooley's and Kevin McCabe has said that one of the Blades' training grounds will be renamed in his honour. Now the city as a whole can dedicate something to Derek Dooley and the busy Parkway is THE road in my opinion.

A sad loss to our city of man from a totally unrecognisable footballing generation, when players played for the fun of it and not the gross paypacket. Glad that Wednesday honoured him on the pitch during one of the derby games some years ago and that there were no lingering hard feelings.

A giant, a lovely bloke and held in high esteem from both sides of the city. A minute's silence at the derby at the lane with fans allowed to mix would be the most apt way of paying our respects.

RIP.

From one who actually saw Derek Dooley play may I just say thanks for some great memories Derek, and although many things have faded from my overcrowded memory the sight of him ploughing down the field in full cry is as bright and clear as though it were yesterday.I know it is a pointless argument yesterdays against todays players but I honestly think some of todays defenders would find this robust all action old fashioned centre forward quite a handful, his physical presence was a start! I have seen many great players over the years but remembering this one is very very special.Name streets, cups, and derbies is fine anything to pepetuate the name of this wonderful MAN, but Derek Dooley will always be alive to me where it counts in my memory.
Rest in peace, and when he arrives at wherever we go after this life the red carpet will be down to welcome him for a job well done.

Compromise is the first sign of weakness, but how about Hanover Way and Brook Hill being named Dooley Way with a statue of the great man standing where the round about is. It's the quickest way between both grounds and a commanding position overlooking a big chunk of the city.

Or we could just leave them there, paint one red & white, the other blue & white and rename them the Derek Dooley cooling towers

Thats not a dig at your suggestion btw.....

Fitting..

He was built like one.

And to think Gordon Banks still wanted to be a goalkeeper, after staring up at them during his childhood.
