Does chips & mushy peas count as one or two portions of vegatables, or not at all ?

Does anyone (who's not vegetarian) actually manage to eat any of the government suggested amounts of fruit/veg ?

Any what about oily fish and all the other things they recommend you eat ?

I would say one, although I would love it if chips did count!

Sorry to report Nick, but I don't think potatoes count as one of your "five a day". Two people have informed me of this sad fact.

I SO hope I'm wrong - for all our sakes!

I maybe wrong but I thought peas were a complex carb & I don't think mushy ones count as a veg portion.

Beans being the musical fruit Deej keeps mentioning I guess :P

Potatoes are definitely not counted as a 'veg' in that sense - they're carbs. Depending on what I'm eating them with beans are either carb or protein but never a veg ...

Does dipping a piece of Cod into hot oil count as a portion of oily fish.:)

There are a lot of ways to get the miracle "five a day" cereal for breakfast with a banana and apple chopped onto it counts as two.

an orange or satsuma with your mid morning break is another, lunchtimes can be the baked potatoe with beans, two more.

That's five portions without trying, then there is the rest of the day to go berserk at the Kebab shop

Remember Healthy eating wont make you live forever, but at times it will seem like it

I'm not a vegetarian, but eat loads of vegetables, almost every night. I definitely eat the government recommendation.
I love carrots and broccoli, and like eating both raw.
I sometimes cut up 4 carrots to boil and finish up eating another raw while I'm doing it.
Same for broccoli.
Mushrooms, crikey, If I buy a tray of button mushrooms from the supermarket, I've often eaten most of them by the time I've driven home..
Sweetcorn, when I've opened a tin of that, I often eat most of the tin with a fork, before I can put it in the meal...

Blimey what CAN we eat then? You'll be telling me that hobnob biscuits aren't a healthy wholegrain next, and that a can of tango doesn't count towards our 5 a day.

Muddy be careful of doing this,

Mushrooms, crikey, If I buy a tray of button mushrooms from the supermarket, I've often eaten most of them by the time I've driven home..

The Mushrooms are grown in sheds that are certainly less than sterile, and often vermin get in there so just make sure you wash your Mushrooms prior to eating them, just as you should with any veg.

True, my uncle used to grow mushrooms in Rivelin, and you would not believe the amount of creepy crawlies and generally horrid things (like gient slugs) that live on them, not to mention they are grown in horse manure.

Decided on a tuna salad instead of chips.

Pasted from the 5 A Day web site

The only exceptions are potatoes and related vegetables such as yams or cassava. This is because they are classified as a starchy food.

So that's chips & jacket spuds out of the window then

if they blacken the staple diet of Kebab with chilli sauce I am in deep Doo doos:rolleyes:

Thanks Owdy and Nick2,
I never knew that, I'd always happily chomp at the bits of soil [or whatever it was]

Take heart muddy... my mum always told me that you were supposed to eat a peck of muck every day to keep you healthy.

Didn't mention slug poop though.

Oh well, it all ends up in the same place in the end; why not experiment with combining flavours?

She never mentioned the benefits of slug poop? How remiss of her! Everyone knows that an average slug poop contains more Vitamin C than an orange!

EDIT - was that Kiwi fruit I was thinking of  :suspect:

Dunno K, I think they might taste the same. I have been told that a bag of crisps contains the same amount of Vit C as an apple. Again, this might not be technically correct.

with a little pool of vinegar in the bottom of the tray, so the last few chips are practically pickled.
