I downloaded a few screen savers of my favourite rock band onto my works laptop. (windows 98 )
I can access and swap these using "display properties".
But in doing this I have inadvertently set up an image that appears when I turn the laptop on and it starts up. Once the machine has fully booted, the chosen screen saver then appears.
How can i delete this initial start up image? where is it stored ?? Our laptops are being upgraded soon to xp and I need to be able to wipe all the downloaded stuff off it as we are not supposed to do this!!!!
Help, in very very plain english needed - as you can probably tell from this craply worded request for help!
Delete the original file that you saved. If you can't remember where you saved it run a search for files & folders and then the name. That way you should be able to find it and delete it. Then reboot and see what happens. You said it was a screensaver but do you mean it was wallpaper. Wallpaper is what comes up on the desktop or background whereas a screensaver only comes up when the machine has been idle for a while. If it is a screensaver go into the control panel by clicking start then settings then control panel and then add and remove programmes. You should find the screensaver listed under there. If it is only wallpaper you can just delete the picture and that should be fine.
They are usually kept in your c:\windows folder.
Check in there to see if it is in there... if it is delete it- job done!

Hi Wendy,
Yes you are right my problem is with the background/wallpaper and not screen savers.
I know where the wallpapers I intended to download were kept and I have deleted these in an attempt to get rid of this problem, but to no avail.
My problem is with an image that appears during the start up of the laptop. I didn't save this anywhere as I didn;t mean to download it.
I have run a search on the bands name, which is how i saved the wallpaper images initially, but nothing is found.
Where o where is this image saved on my laptop??????/ it's driving me mad!!!!!!!
Try doing a full shutdown and then switch it back on - sometime it doesn't always clear it when you just do a restart. If it still comes up have a look in C;/windows/system or system32 you may find a copy in there too. Windows 98 sometimes copies wallpaper into there for speed of loading.

Nope, still no joy.
Have searched for images in every folder on my C drive. including system and system 32 folders and not found anything. I have checked anything that lookslike an image... jpeg, gif etc.
Can anyone suggest anything else......

Think Iv'e found it !!!!!! Yipeeeeeeeeeee:clap:
Did a browse serach for all bitmap images and found it hidden away in C/Windows/microsoft...... called internet explorer?
Thanks to the offers of help. much appreciated.
I'll have to think about this for a while and get back to you I've not used 98 for a couple of years now so going back into the depths of my memory as to where things are saved for the startup sequence. It must be in there somewhere but I'll have to get back to you. However, I wouldn't worry about it too much the chances are they won't even check before they reformat it and sell it on.

Search for:
Logo.sys - it's not a system file, merely a renamed bitmap (ususally in the ROOT dir of C:). Then delete this file and reboot.
There's also a ????.sys file for logon, shutdown etc (within the Windows dir IIRC).

Oh yes - forgot about those! Empty your temporary internet files and history too because all the website you have visited will be cached.
