A week earlier and I might have had a look but I'm taking delivery of a merc tomorrow.

They'll need to prove me wrong then.

I can say hand on heart that I have NEVER EVER come across a Merc driver that isn't a total f*** wit who thinks he/she ownes the road and has right of way at ALL times!

I would love to see it.

Even bus drivers who are lower than dirt give way sometimes!

The same could be said about BMW drivers.

So, today I'm a Peugeot driver with impeccable road manners, hem, hem, and tomorrow I'll burst out of my chrysalis and become a fully formed **** merc driver? Did you turn into a complete a**e when you started driving your beemer, did you throw away the indicators, did you suddenly forget what the inside lane on a motorway's for, do you now park across pavements, do you keep the windows wound down and emphasise the bass on your **** beemer music system?

I'd like to think not DB, so don't go judging people by their cars. You'd never find me doing that.

Yes I am all of the above!

Nah not really. I just hope you dont turn into one max. Serious.. I have never ever come across a Merc driver with courtesy and manners on the road.

Good luck and I realise I came on a bit strong but it is an area I feel strongly on this issue!

Implied apology accepted, as always.

Perception is a b*gg**, you probably don't notice the good drivers. It's like kids in restaurants, you only see/hear the badly behaved ones. When the good ones get up to go you suddenly realise they were there all the time but just being good.

Perhaps if I can be a***ed I'll start a thread on that topic.

Quite true. It's human nature to notice all the bad points and never the good points. I shall now make it my mission to spot a good merc driver.

Lets face it, anyone who drives a flash car acts in a flash way, it's in their nature once they get behind the wheel of a Beamer or a Merc or a Lexus or anything with a hefty price tag.

DaBouncer
22-09-2003, 13:00
Hefty Price tag? Mine was F.O.C :P

Pestered the old man for ages for him to give me the keys and log book etc. Put the guilt trip on about years of forgotten B-Day cards, presents, xmas etc.

He's by no means well off, but since he had another car that just needed taxing to be on the road. He eventually caved!

max
22-09-2003, 13:02
What would you describe as a hefty price tag? A month's salary, a year's? It's all relative.

DaBouncer
22-09-2003, 13:13
Hefty for me at the mo would be a day's salary!

I rest my case. I once bought a car which took me several months to save up for and it was a clapped out beetle for £200.

Editing this post now I think!

Newer Mercs suffer from pretty poor interior quality (as Many Merc forums will also tell you). If you are buying the pre-Chrysler models they are solid as a brick.

In my experience, a Merc is only for uninspired drivers. (having driven a fair few of them, including newer ones, I know!) But, as the saying goes, each to their own. I might one day find myself in a Merc (probably a Hearse, but you know what I mean!)

The only Merc worth having IMHO is an AMG Model.

Ps. good luck on your servicing bill if your taking it to a dealer - I would advise you take plenty of 'lubrication' with you, and you may aswell avoid wearing your pants that morning!
A good example of this is a basic service, and brake change on a A170 A-Class which came to £560 :o As I understand it, their hourly labour rates are the same as a London small operations specialist.

Please don't have, or cause an accident while you're on the lookout for the Mercs.

Isn't concentrating on some particular object conducive to 'bad' driving.

I suppose you left yourself open to this but GOOD LUCK in your quest! The only decent Merc driver that I have ever seen was at the time delivering BMW's

IMHO Mercs are a far superior car, I would never buy a Beemer, just not the same as a Merc.

Mercedes = Quality and engineering

BMW = Pimps Car

There was a famous song that says it all.

Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?

LOL! When was the last time you drove one? Let me assure you that since Chrysler got a look in, the quality has down hill. Thats just not me saying that you can do a search on Merc forums where you will find the same being said by those who have never driven anything but Mercs.

Anyway its well documented that BMW is the world number one engine manufacturer. (thats not in output terms but standard terms)

About the song -

I notice she didn't mention BMW in her song that "says it all" - because she knew, as do many other drivers of BMW's that although the lord may buy you a Mercedes Benz, you had better ask for him provide you some decent customer care aswell from the franchised $tealerships! Besides, when she sang that Mercs were a decent car - but now

Arguing about cars is like arguing about football teams - generally a waste of time.

But if I had the financial choice - a Ferrari anytime.

Ps. I have had a Peugot 106 for several years, and for local trips or trips into Derbyshire, it can't be beaten.

It doesn't matter which make or model you buy in the UK - you'll get screwed anyway.

I thought you were talking about just engines, not who owns what. RR engines are superior to anything on this planet. I don't doubt German engineering for one moment, but you don't see many aeroplanes with BMW branded engines.

Ahh! I was talking about just engines aswell, but Rolls have now increased capacity, and are looking at supplying more engines (to aviation applications).

I was talking on a car level, but you are right Rolls has an excellent reputation for engine building, which I have to add, BMW is expansing by adding billions of its own money to aid new R&D. So in every Rolls, there will be a bit of BMW!

1Man&HisRolls...I mean BMW

Having driven neither, I'd agree with Mikey that Mercedes are superior for the top end cars:

7 series v S-Class
8 series v SL models

but I think BMW have the edge in the middle range:

5 series v E-Class
3 series v C-Class
X5 series v M-Class

The new 7 series doesn't seem very popular does it? I've seen no more than three since they were launched, compared to hundreds of the new S-class. I've seen more Z4s and new 5s than I have 7s

I was a passenger in an E-class once. It was surprisingly noisy and more uncomfortable than I would have expected. I think it was a combination of low profile tyres, lowered suspension and wind noise (he was going a little too fast)

Sorry but the Rolls Royce that makes aero engines is a completely different company to the one that makes (made) motor carts (sic). Anyway, BMW engines do go in aeroplanes.

They still make aircraft engines? I know they used to back in their beginnings, along with bike engines.

I could care less about my car, as a result it looks a bit foxed. Repairs are cheap and can often be effected with duct tape and araldite.

These new fangled contraptions with their satellite navigation, cupholders, aircon and electronic brains are rather damp farts compared to the sheer driving thrill, and I speak from precious little experience, of carefully driving an Aston Martin AMV8 Volante through the lanes of southern Hampshire. What a sovereign masterpiece of mind and machine that vehicle is. You can actually join the Aston Martin Owners Club without owning one (you get the Tie and a Badge too!). For the most part the members are extremely friendly and eager to share the joy that their cars give them. Rallies are a good opportunity to try different ones and take the wheel, if the owners aren't too nervous.

Ah.

Back to 'Rude Bimmers and Mercs' as the infamous Stoke Newington Car dealership calls itself. The wonderful thing about these overengineered blocks of teutonic posturing is that when you prang a lampost or wipe the wing mirror off on a multistorey car park pillar, or simply change the tyres, you're lucky if you get change out of five hundred quid.

Every other guy on the road, driving their Ford Mundano, thinks they're posturing men with machismo issues, but only because they secretly want to take off from the lights at warp speed, or cut a racing line down the A57 themselves.

Anyone driving an Aston Martin knows already that they are driving the finest Gran Turismo car on the road. Everyone else politely peels out of the way gawping in awe and delight.

Starting the engine causes cows to bolt and dogs to whine. Then as you surge away, the stygian growl of the engine rises to a roaring purr;jaws drop, crying babies fall silent, small furry mammals die of shock.

1Man&hisBMW

Yeah but you only have an Aston if you're old and have pockets deeper that the Atlantic Ocean! Its just a glorified Ford!

Just popped on to let you guys know what a staggeringly "blokey" thread this is

I once drove a BMW 528i automatic, but it only did 15 miles to the gallon so I didnt keep it - it was my company car if you like . It was good to look at and people thought I had come up in the world. They didnt know it wasnt mine

I swapped it as I recall for a soft-top 2CV6

LOL

Honestly, I really did

LOLOL
