View Full Version : Tommy Vance, Disc Jockey, RIP Plain Talker 06-03-2005, 12:04 It has just been announced that the DJ, Tommy Vance has passed away of a stroke, aged just 63. First, John Peel, now TV... Sad. RIP PT owdlad 06-03-2005, 12:06 I agree PT, he is another who will be sadly missed. Strix 06-03-2005, 12:10 Oh my God! His voice was booming in the background of most days of my late teens. I used to tape the radio 1 friday rock show and listen to it again at least twice in the following week..... until the next 'fix' was available. I'd always kind of hoped he'd be as accessible again one day. RIP TV  muddycoffee 06-03-2005, 12:28 Another piece of my childhood has gone forever. I grew up with the friday rock show. R.I.P. Tommy Maddy 06-03-2005, 16:31 Thats a real shock :( I used to just listen to thats voice, didn't matter what he said! RIP Tommy JoeP 06-03-2005, 16:36 I used to listen to the Friday Rock Show on Radio 1 when I was in my teens. I remember vividly listening on my home made radio - somewhere in the wee small hours my mother would wander in and remove the headphones before I throttled myself... :) Another one of the 'fan' broadcasters gone - definitely a dying breed. Joe Foxxx 07-03-2005, 16:00 Most sad...no more "TV on the TV"! I shall miss him saying that and all his other most cheesy lines. Used to watch the friday rock show too, TV was a legend. Lou 08-03-2005, 07:54 I used to love the Friday Rock Show too. I'm gutted to hear he's passed away. Indeed he was a legend. RIP Tommy x Strix 08-03-2005, 13:03 Originally posted by Foxxx Used to watch the friday rock show too, TV was a legend. Am I missing something? muddycoffee 08-03-2005, 13:16 Originally posted by Foxxx Most sad...no more "TV on the TV"! I shall miss him saying that and all his other most cheesy lines. Used to watch the friday rock show too, TV was a legend. Exactly he's famous for hosting the Friday rock show on radio 1 for 15 years. Unless you worked at radio 1 you were unlikely to be able to watch him, t'was before webcams in those days Foxxx 08-03-2005, 15:22 Shows what you guys know doesn't it! He presented the Friday Night Rock show on digital channel VH1. He used to say 'this is TV on the TV' Everyone is always so quick to pick up on everything you say on here. Get you facts right first :loopy: RIP tommy Foxxx 08-03-2005, 15:24 Oh and he also appeared on hells kitchen, which I believe you can watch and presented TOTP on the odd occasion, but the VH1 show was a regular friday night slot. But just to make you happy, I did listen to him on the radio also. Strix 08-03-2005, 16:00 Originally posted by Foxxx Shows what you guys know doesn't it! I really missed his radio show and am disappointed I didn't know about the TV show. muddycoffee 08-03-2005, 16:11 I'm sorry foxx, but I was sure his reputation is from the Friday Rock show on the radio. I have never seen his TV show. And to be honest I thought he'd dissapeared. Foxxx 09-03-2005, 08:43 Originally posted by Strix Easy tiger! Sorry, did go off a bit, but was more annoyed by the sarcastic comments about webcams and working for radio one! All I was innocently saying was I used to watch him on the friday night rock show! Anyway, no worries you guys, shame you didn't see it, it was like the radio show, but him in a studio with his sun shades on looking cool (or trying!) introducing rock video's. Used to show some good stuff. It was good to have this to watch because there hadn't really been much about since raw power, head bangers ball etc. Maybe Vanessa Warwick will make a come back!!! In fact have just started a new thread about headbangers ball, there's a petition to bring it back! Ousetunes 10-03-2005, 14:54 Agree with you guys that another TRUE VOICE of radio has gone too soon, leaving a void and making some of our childhood memories become slightly blurred. Richard Anthony Crispin Francis Prue Hope-Weston, AKA Tommy Vance was a legend, cut from the same cloth as John Peel when radio deejays were living characters whom you could connect with, associate with and befriend. They were yer best mates but you looked up to them, knowing they were slightly older than you. (Afterall, we used to literally 'go to bed' with these people!!) He did the top forty chart run-down from 1982-1984 (replacing Fluff Freeman, arguably the ONLY legend of the Golden Days of Radio remaining). Y'know, when you look back, doesn't it all seem so innocent, the 7" single, no MTV (through which indeed the Video DID kill the radio star), crap hairstyles and silly clothes. Wasn't it great?! Yeah I agree Tommy Vance will be a sad loss though funny enough I was talking about him last weekend and someone said he was dead, but I was quick to point out he was still with us and appeared on Get me outa here and hells kitchen. My mates cursed him.:suspect: feargal 10-03-2005, 15:03 Didn't TV do that Dumber and Dumber thing too? His voiceovers on that were great... he didn't even seem to be watching it, just saying random stuff "ooh, that's gotta hurt", "he's crrrrazy if he thinks that's gonna work", etc. Fantastic! I don't listen to much national radio anymore because it's a struggle to find DJs who are enthusiastic and open about what they play, and not just solely promote whats on the playlist at the moment. I think there's only Mark Radcliffe who seems genuinely interested in new stuff, different styles, etc. Although please feel free to point me at anyone else! Foxxx 10-03-2005, 16:00 Originally posted by Ousetunes Richard Anthony Crispin Francis Prue Hope-Weston, AKA Tommy Vance was a legend, He got his name because the radio station he went to in the 60s had written a name jingle for the DJ Tommy Vance who didn't turn up for the job. So Richard stepped in and adopted the name and stuck with it! |
