View Full Version : Do Forum residents know each other in"real life"

I was just wondering how many people on the forum know each other in real life, so to speak.
I know that we all have alias names but with the meetings that are being arranged at the Devonshire Cat etc, I was unsure if people know each other and whether they can guess who we are ,based on the information that we post?

I now know quite a few Forum members 'in the flesh' so to speak, but as my handle is also my real name I guess I'm quite lucky in that I only need to remember to answer to one soubriquet..... :)

I find it nice to meet people - you get a much better for feel for what they say on line after seeing them in r/l.

Now heres where I have a problem!

It would be nice to meet other forumers, but because of my job and what I write about in Tales from the tool box I have to be carefull.

At first when I started writng 'Tales' I even asked for my user name to be removed, but then relized that no one could work out who I am from that.

My biggest fear is that I write something on here then go to work the next day and bump in to someone who Ive written about.

In this months 'tale' Ive written about a sarnie shop in Doncaster where they spit on the bread mans egg. All true I promise and although I wont name the shop, imagine if she read that and put two and two together !!

Have a read of Soapbox and see what you think..... go on .......please...... oh all right then pretty please...

Completely agree, have been to several in the past, not for a while though.

Am tempted to meet some more members at one of the current Dev Cat Sunday evenings.

HJ Dary - One of the problems of investigative journalism.... ;)

We probably need an Alan Smithee for the Forum - in the film business if you're ever involved for contractual reasons with a real stinker of a film as producer, director or writer you can have your name replaced on the credits by 'Alan Smithee'. Perhaps we should invite members who wish to stay anonymous at meets to become Alan Smithee..... or even just lots of Smiths like in The Matrix!

Venger - it would be good to put a name to a face with you! I've missed a couple of the Sunday meets recently (and am not going tonight) because I overstretched myself a few weeks back and am still playing catch up... :)

There are also the Wednesday night ones every two weeks - they're good fun too, though usually smaller. We had one this last week....so next one would be....a week on Wednesday!

The only ones i know in 'real life' are those who i have recommended the forum too and family who are also members. I often imagine what people look like though, does that make me odd? lol x

not at all, leddi...

I "hear" their voice... or at least what I 'think' their voice will sound like, as I read what they write in their posts, and I have a mental image of the ones I haven't yet met.

I have had the odd surprise, such as when we had a mini mee, and Penguin was there, and he was not totally as I had imagined him.

Because I have a distinctive "look" (I.E I am a generously-upholstered blonde woman, who happens to whizz around the city centre in a large red electric wheelchair) I have been "eyeballed" at least a couple of times by folk who have recognised me from my avatar, and made the connection.

Sometimes it gets worrying, LOL, because forummers I havent even met, yet, will come into the chatroom, and say "PT, Was that *you* whizzing out of sainsbury's this afternoon?"

and I have to pause for thought and think.. " now, did I knock anyone over on my journey...? ;) " (j/k) before I admit or deny being the person they may or may not have seen.

I have met a number of forummers IRL..
I have met:- (wracks brain to think...) sian, jamie, deejay, Duffman, Mr H, tracie, edd, yodameister, andy78, (and a couple of the other andys), sass and buffy, penguin, ole1, pretty woman, mosherchik, satan in heels (not seen her on the forum for a bit...) rtapper, rich, rubydzzler, j-blaze, adaline, JoeP, DanSumption, KateSheff, jasonsheff, miss feathers, msbehavin', 367 squadron, Ianmitchell, mobileB, hels, eman-groovin (albeit fleetingly),and a few more that I can't think of right this moment

I met a fair few people at the forum meet that I went to last week.

Didn't speak to them all though lol, they were sat at the other table whilst I sat with Deejay, duffman, brainthrust, Plain Talker, Andy (I think) and TracieJC.

Deejay and I seem to have connections somehow! :o :?

I've met a few people from the forum but I've met most of them whilst working at Takapuna on Thursday nights.

If anyone fancies meeting people from the sheffieldforum you should pop down to Takapuna on Thursday nights because quite a few members are spotted there!

Sometimes it is even quite hard to work out from peoples user names whether they are male or female( previous post exempt!)

You can sometimes work it out though, just from the way in which a comment is made that the person is a woman .
Not that it really matters that much.It is just a strange concept, getting to know someone based purely on what they think and say.
I suppose that is really how people should know each other and then there would be no discrimination.
People would be judged on their personality and not based on how they look, or their ethnicity, disability or standing in society.
That is what is great really about the forum
So many people from so many walks of life getting on relatively welll with each other and respecting each other.
If only the world was run in this way!

Don't know if you are aware of this thread, Espadrille

http://scoreboards.hotornot.com/sheffieldforum

You can 'see' (if not talk to SOME forumers)
It's a bit of a trawl to piece together who is who though, 'cos most people register a different username and then post what it is (if you see what I mean....)
Always good to put a face to a username :hihi:
I'm on there as 'incognito11' :)

All I need to say to Joe are the following words..

Festival FM's first ever voice

Pot Noodles

Dipole

Test transmission

And I think he'll work out who I am very quickly!

If not.... there's always...http://www.destinyhost.co.uk/chrystal/djpage.php?id=732578

If you saw me in the street, you wouldn't recognise me. Ask a certain beagle lovin' mutual friend :)

Only one other forum user has ever seen me in the flesh and put the name to the face and that was Carcrash back at the Tsunami benefit gig which took place at the Earl of Arundel & Surrey.

There are pictures at http://www.soundaloud.com/ , but I escaped the lense that night!
